Questions for Quest 3 Owners?
-
Hello guys,
I’m planning on purchasing a Quest 3 for my setup, but before doing so would like your thoughts on some things.
-
Are you satisfied with the Quest 3, or would you now recommend a different headset?
-
What cable do you suggest? I would ideally want to get a cable that wouldn’t require charging the headset.
-
What head strap would you suggest? I am thinking of the BOBVR M3 Mini.
-
I want the headset only for BMS usage. Will the 128GB be ok, or would I need the 512GB for some reason that isn’t apparent to me?
-
Can you please confirm thate the Quest 3 can operate without an internet connection? Since I was told that it can’t, but I cannot find any data to confirm that speculation.
Thanks guys in advance.

Yes, totally satisfied. If on a budget you can go for Pico4. Visual quality is a little bit lower on the Pico4, but confort is higher out of the box (not that much, but noticeable).

I have the following hardware listed in this post => https://forum.falcon-bms.com/topic/26165/quest-3-virtual-desktop-rj-45-adapter-working-without-wifi?_=1709030262753
RUXELY Adapter USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet => https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B09MQDWP6H/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
QIANRENON 240 W 40 Gbps USB4.0 C female to female => https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B0BRCQ2G1B/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Fasgear cable USB-C 3 meters => https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B08FY28Z8F/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
I HIGHLY recommend getting Virtual Desktop and running it with cable. -
No idea, I have stock. I had BOBVR in Quest 2 and the comfort difference was quite high. So yes, I think you should go for BOBVR based on my Quest 2 experience.
-
128GB is ok, no need for 512GB unless you want to record really long videos and keep them in the headset.
-
I work with it quite often with Wifi off, I have internet in the computer but, AFAIK, it doesn’t need internet to work.
Quest 3 is a great headset I think for the price it’s the best you can get right now
Regards!

Quest 3 owner here. I agree with everything he said. Any issues, in my opinion, are due to working with BMS’s first attempt at making VR available. U4 promises improvements, which I’m waiting for.

TLDR: YES, Absolutely great headset at a great price.
Long version:
I am a Quest 3 Owner. Unless you have thousands of dollars to spend, I find the Quest 3 provides outstanding value. In addition to providing really good clear BMS images, the headset can also be used completely independent of the PC to play hundreds of games unencumbered with cables, and a passthrough capability that, to me is safer, and provides the opportunity to play “hybrid”, mixed reality games. I have no doubt that very soon we will be able to harness this mixed reality capability in BMS, which is great considering the $$$ I have already invested in desktop instrumentation. I most enthusiastically recommend the Quest 3. It’s the best sub-$1000 headset out there now. Rhetorically speaking, how can one argue with a $499 (or $649 for the 512 GB version) VR headset that performs so well in BMS and with all the other value-added abilities I mentioned above?- What cable do you suggest? I would ideally want to get a cable that wouldn’t require charging the headset.
Some of the $ you save can be invested in peripherals that make the whole system work better. I bought a premium USB C cable from VRCover.
Be very careful when purchasing a USB C cable for the Quest 3. In the research I did before purchasing, I could find no cable that will keep the Quest 3 fully charged and pass suitable video\audio to a PC when plugged in, but 3 cables seem to be able to slow the loss of charge significantly: 1) Official Meta Quest cable ($129), 2) Anker High Speed Cable (currently unavailable on Amazon), and 3) the VRCover Premium cable ($49 direct from VRCover. Here’s a good article discussing cables..
Frankly, after trying it out, and getting it to work, I’ve not used wired cable. I fly BMS VR using Virtual Desktop through a wireless network connection. You’ll need a good high speed router for this but well worth it for the immersion. See below for how to handle the power situation.
- What head strap would you suggest? I am thinking of the BOBVR M3 Mini.
After a lot of research, I settled on the BoboVR PRO with Battery pack. Absolutely brilliant product! THIS is what allows you to go cable-less. Worth every bit of $49.99
The battery perfectly balances the unit and the strap is extremely comfortable, taking the weight off the bridge of your nose and cheeks. The battery pack will go about 2.5 hours and then the Quest 3 battery will go another 2 to 2.5 hours until needing to recharge. Also recommend investing in a charging stand for the Quest 3 and controllers. I absolutely would recommend the Pro with battery over the mini.
- I want the headset only for BMS usage. Will the 128GB be ok, or would I need the 512GB for some reason that isn’t apparent to me?
If you only want to fly BMS, 128 GB will be fine. However, I found myself taking advantage of many other VR apps/games - especially since the Quest was designed for independent (from a computer) ops plus mixed-reality. I always opt for more memory in any electronic device, but if price is an issue, 128 GB is just fine.
- Can you please confirm thate the Quest 3 can operate without an internet connection? Since I was told that it can’t, but I cannot find any data to confirm that speculation.
I haven’t tried. Quest 3 connects seamlessly wirelessly to your local network. Works fine that way.
Thanks guys in advance.
No problem. I agonized over the decision and did a lot of research before diving in to VR. The Quest 3 absolutely met or exceeded all of what I was looking for. Once I got everything working, and took my first BMS flight in VR, I was totally floored. I don’t know if I can fly flat panel ever again I most strongly recommend the Quest 3.
That said, it took a week or so to get everything up and working. I found I needed to upgrade my ancient cable modem and router to get everything working like I wanted it to run (but mine were a real bottleneck and wayyyyoverdue for replacement).
So glad I upgraded both. You’ll need to purchase Virtual Desktop ON THE QUEST 3 from META - NOT ON STEAM! The Steam version will not work with Quest 3. $15 or so.
Some other useful peripherals:
-
If you wear eyeglasses, I strongly recommend getting prescription lenses for your Quest 3. I got mine from HONSVR If you do, add the extra $10 or so to get the magnetic version. The lens frames snap right into the Quest 3 lens slots, and you can easily remove the prescription lenses which are held onto the frames via small but strong magnets. That way if others want to try your Quest 3, just pop out the prescription lenses, and pop them right back in when it’s your turn. Just shy of $60 for the set, takes about 10 days to get them.
-
As mentioned, a Quest 3 charger which comes with rechargeable batteries for the controllers. Some also include a wall charger; others don’t.
-
Consider earbuds. The Quest 3 microphone is, in a word, terrible, and it is my only bone to pick with the Quest 3. If you use VoiceAttack or FoxVox, do yourself a favor and get some earbuds. The ones I purchased (Christmas present from my son, actually): Soundcore VR P10 Meta earbuds.
-
USB C wall charger. Depending on what you have already and what comes with your other accessories.
Follow the recommendations here in the forum to get a great picture in BMS. I have no fuzziness in the cockpit, and can see all instruments, MFDs and Bullseye info clearly, but I have a very powerful Graphics card and CPU.

@Raphael said in Questions for Quest 3 Owners?:

Bang-for-buck nothing is even remotely close.
- What cable do you suggest? I would ideally want to get a cable that wouldn’t require charging the headset.
The best cable is one plugged into a charger while you use virtual desktop and a descent router. Link performance is massively below VD in my experience.
- What head strap would you suggest? I am thinking of the BOBVR M3 Mini.
I’ve been using mine for work and play and haven’t found the need to upgrade at all. Use it for a while first. You’d get a descent router for the cost of some of the head straps.
- I want the headset only for BMS usage. Will the 128GB be ok, or would I need the 512GB for some reason that isn’t apparent to me?
Yes to the first bit, no to the second bit.

Not sure, but knowing meta I doubt it.

Maybe with the exception of Pico4.
It’s good HMD, allows you to register with some throw away email, asks very little questions in general, makes no fuss about installing apps outside of official store and works good without internet connection.
Cons: no eye tracking (sadly PRO version is not available outside China) and uses a bit older SoC than Quest3, which lacks hardware AV1 decoding and struggles with HEVC above 200Mbps.
Still can provide excellent image quality and can be bought for less than 400$.Also it’s not available in some countries.

Hey guys, thank you all for your answers and time you put into them! I can see me getting a Quest 3 very soon!
BUT I really need it to work without an internet connection. Could you guys please try using it in BMS without your internet connections?
Thank you! Beers at the bar on me!
-
The Quest 3 will always look for an internet connection when it powers up, but runs just fine either way. There’s nothing about Falcon BMS that requires an internet connection.
-
@Raphael ,
I am unsure how you could download Virtual Desktop software without an internet connection. Similarly, without an internet connection, I don’t know how the headset could do necessary updates. Here’s a Reddit thread which discusses. My feeling is, and I could be wrong, that you don’t need an internet connection necessarily just to play (already installed) games (unless the game itself requires an internet connection) but at some point you would have to have an internet connection in order for the headset to do updates to its software, or in order to download new software (for example, virtual desktop).
Here’s another article discussing Quest 3 and WiFi. You’ll need an internet connection at least once to set up the headset and link it to your Facebook or Meta account (or establish a Meta account if you don’t have a FB or Meta account already).

@Tomcattwo a one time internet connection to set it up will not be a problem. But for future use for my setup will not be possible.
If someone can try disconnecting from there internet and trying to fly in BMS, it would be a great verification of what is said online. Thanks!

Very much, it’s a mature product, good optics, good enough fov and no screendoor or other annoying artifacts.
What cable do you suggest? I would ideally want to get a cable that wouldn’t require charging the headset.
I found on amazon a usb 3 cable with ability to plug in an extra charger. While using that when playing I’ve yet to run out of batteries if the device is charged before I begin.
What head strap would you suggest? I am thinking of the BOBVR M3 Mini.
bobo is overkill for Flightsim use, default one works good enough

128GB is perfectly fine even if my whole family uses the headset

Unknown but I can’t see why it wouldn’t work without. For running BMS you connect the headset with the PC (pref. via cable) using the oculus program on Windows, then start BMS.

I have played BMS with my Quest 3 when my internet connection was out all day. I hope this settles your concerns.

@SoBad Thanks, that’s what I needed! Cheers!
