Unsolved Triple Monitors - are any changes going to be made in 4.38 re: displays?
-
It’s always bothered me a bit to get the stretching effect on my triples using Nvidia Surround to make the 3 into one display. The FOV (giant cockpit) I was able to get under control with the ini file, so that’s fine. Now i’m in a position where I need the ability to quickly plug/unplug monitor #3 (Nvidia 4 monitor hardware limit) to allow for use my VR headset (counts as two displays) so running Nvidia Surround is really not an option anymore. In DCS they use a “3 Camera” setup that uses the overall resolution and the resolution per monitor to give a “stretch-free” 3 monitor display. Can this (or something similar) be implemented in BMS or is it outside of the possibilities of the code?
-
@Icer I think this was discussed before and the answer then was “no.” As much as I would love the answer to change, I’ve now moved onto VR.
If you are the same, then why look for Surround + VR options? Have you considered a TripleHead2Go solution? -

interesting, what’s the perf like … is it similar to VR, or closer to stretch/surround triple-mon?

I would have to run the FPS counter but it seems quite smooth in the situations I was in…

DCS basically makes it like 3 monitors each with it’s own FOV. You can adjust the angle and FOV IIRC, just like in XPlane. However, 3 individual displays put more strain on the system so lower FPS compared to just 1 display stretched over 3 monitors. At least that was how it was the last time I tried it, which was a good few years ago. -

Have you considered a TripleHead2Go solution?I “think” that people have attempted to overcome the 4 monitor limit using devices like this (which was discontinued - EOL notification in July of 2023) and failed. Not really sure why, as only one DP port of the 4090 would be flatscreens and 1 (but counts as two) for my Aero VR. I think the card somehow detects what you are doing?

@Icer
Not sure as I’ve never tried TH2G. It was an option when I was first going into multi-screen, back when AMD was doing it better than nVidia and I simply purchased and AMD GPU at the time as IIRC nVidia users were using TH2G. As I understand it, the device tricks your GPU into thinking you have one big ultra-super-duper-widescreen monitor… so kind of like nVidia Surround but a hardware solution so you only use one GPU display output instead of three. -

For flatscreen I currently have BMS in my center screen and use Helios\RTT to display the MFDs\Gauges I want on my MFD screens and a moving Map on my left screen, right screen is unplugged… Maybe the 5090 will have the 4 display limit removed!

@Icer
Or a 2nd GPU for the extra display ports? What kind of CPU/mobo do you have? Coz you can probably use the integrated GPU as well if you have one. -
@Atlas - Intel i9-13900KF (no GPU) and a RTX 4090… not worth messing with…

Realistically, the prospect of mixed reality using camera equipped VR HMDs is making the chances of getting anyone on the code team, anyone capable of working on it that is (I’d have done this ages ago if I knew how ;)), interested in doing a “proper” job with properly rendered output for multiple out-the-window screen views is starting to drop precipitously. I would not hold my breath.
There, perhaps having said that out loud, one of my fellow coders will be contradict me – how’s that for reverse psych?? Meanwhile I’m still breathing in…and out.

The only reason I fly in 2D here and in the DCS F-16 is due to enjoying the physical aspect of my MFDs and ICP. Unlike others, reaching out blindly to buttons (I can’t arrange my stuff precisely where the on-screen cockpit has them) is an big immersion killer for me. Just checked and my PointCtrl order of December 2022 may ship this year, he is doing March 2022 orders now… Hoping by then it will work in BMS (already good in DCS), but not holding my breath for the order or the BMS compatibility… Other option would be if someone did a camera like the Aero XR-4 for 1/2 the price that allows you to “mark” areas for display within the VR display… but I digress from the initial subject matter, sorry.

@Icer
I think mixed reality is quite doable with HMDs like Quest3. See shorts Marvins YT channel (ViperSimmer). AFAIK u4 is supposed to even bring proper view for MR and option to easy toggle between MR and VR view. -

Yeah, that “F” is the kicker. I used to avoid those as that extra monitor from the iGPU was useful.
How about a laptop dock that can do video via USB?
