Set up a campaign server. Can it be done?
-
Greetings,
There was a time when Falcon BMS provided a “-time” switch that put the sim into a windowed mode and you were unable to join the server on that host. However, you could start a campaign and just leave it running and people could join from external sources.
I have a decent rig that could be used as a campaign server at my home. I have no intention and setting it up for external use, but I’d love to set up a campaign and just have it running real time and join when I want.
Is it possible to set up a scenario like this?
-
Start a campaign, leave the clock at 1x speed and leave your rig on (or save when you shut it down and load if back on)…
No really, there is no difference between single player and a server where just you are joining. -
Yeah please don’t delete posts, others may have the same questions and those that replied to you with an answer don’t need to repeat themselves over and over. If you promise you won’t delete this one I will give you some tips

Sorry about that. I thought the topic may not have been relevant. I restored the topic.

@Puckertoe
I moved my answers to the other topic. Questions about the campaign are never irrelevant, it’s the heart of the sim.
Sorry I cannot answer your server question here because I simply don’t fly online. -
So yes, it is possible to leave the server running, and to save resources you can use the -norender feature. Another option is moving the server air base to a neutral one so that it is sitting between both teams and since it is neutral for both teams no aircraft will drop bombs on that airbase and interrupt the session. Keep in mind that the server host needs to be in 3D, that is Take Off > RAMP.

As @Atze-0 recommended, you can just leave your PC on or even better, turn off your PC and if you come back 8 hours later, turn on your PC and just time-accelerate 8 hour’s worth.

You can use the option to save the campaign from time to time (config) and you can turn off your normal PC. When it was going to fly, it loaded the last file that was saved.
In our wing we save the server every 1 hour and if by some chance it closes or crashes we only load the last state of the campaign 1 hour late. You can also configure it to save every 30 minutes, but that would create too many auto-saved files.

@VIPER-0
Do you manually save every hour or is there some way to automate this? -

If anyone has questions about how to run a BMS server, or opinions on server settings, or any of that, this is the place to ask! Happy to help if I can, as well as those above, been running a BMS server for nearly 15 years and would be more than willing to assist anyone in doing the same.
