Hud-projection mod
-
Sure Dee-Jay. Also I do not seek credit or so, only shared what I made as mod of FanOf…'s mod for myself.
My only point here is to help you make a good decision, whatever you wish to implement.
IMHO as far as edges are concerned, fatcap’s 3993.dds is the best. His 8005.dds surely is nice too, but implements no HUD tint.
As far as size is concerned and artistic implementation of reflector imprints, FanOfBMS432’s 3993.dds are the best, especially the whitish one/beige one.
As far as compromise between the above and good green is concerned, PL_Harpoon’s 3993.dds is the best IMHO at the cost of slightly less sharp edges.
For 8005.dds, we’ve seen many mods and IMO FanOFBMS432’s versions where the best.I made a little upload to give you all which I use or used at some stage.
It does not contain all files and shall only help make an educated decision.
I really hope FanOFBMS432 comes with his full mod one day incl. realistic gauge reflections on the canopy.
Easy to add these files, simply a matter of replacing the 8005.dds and the 3993.dds, so a backup can be done without pain.
Keep in mind all 8005.dds contain different degrees of canopy reflections and HUD shapes for the upper part.
Also different reflection colours, I tried to add a golden touch in my mods.PS: Check my screen on page 4, one of FanOfBMS432’s WIPs…I hope this version is contained in my upload somewhere.
That comes very close to what you wanted. Maybe contact FanOfBMS432.I will add one version which I left out, I think it is either version Fan1 or Fan2 lol.
My tip:
Try each version, each once at e.g. 15.00. For each of the 8005.dds, try one of the 4 3993.dds.
Sounds hard, takes one hour maximum. Fly over horizon line, in direction of the sun and towards the ground, then you have a good estimation.http://www.mediafire.com/?c1xckii41hv7hnm
Some screens.
IT version slightly edited + with fatcap’s 3993.dds…
With FanOfBMS432’s green 3993.dds
Another version of that 8005.dds with FanOF…'s beige 3993.dds
Clearest shapeMy USAF 8005.dds mod of FanOfBMS432’s IT version (the version the IT guys used from his mod)…with beige FanOf…3993.dds.
With PL_Harpoon’s (IIRC) 3993.dds

I’m definitively looking something like this one:
Look the circle border is clearly visible. On other screen, it is too much blurred, we do not see clearly where the circle start (do understand what I mean?)
So … if you can make one like this one. Would be perfect.
-
YOu already got that in the files I uploaded.
I see your point yet the circle IMHO is too big compared to most reallife shots.
So, if you want that, take the 3993.dds by fatcap,
I labelled it accordingly and BTW it took some time to get those files, then choose the in your opinion best 8005.dds, also labelled. The 8005.dds are IMHO more important.
You will have the bigger green circle with the fatcap 3993.dds.
Select the 8005.dds which fits best. Keep in mind what I wrote about reflection and HUD upper parts.
So you need to test them. You can do this by inserting them in KoreaOBJ and test in a Dogfight, you can switch the DDS file (8005) after each flight and need to get down to desk with the windows key.
Testing all is a matter of 6-20 minutes. -
Thank you mate … I’ve missed your link … Will try it tonight.

(belated)…you’re welcome.
Good Luck finding the best 8005.dds version hehe. Keep in mind the original 8005.dds by BMS has slightly differently placed reflections than some of the modded versions. Reason is to affect the relevant sections, obviously some folks copied and pasted the section for the canopy and that seems to be very tricky. Yet I only noticed it when I deliberately compared it. So not the world of a difference.Tom

Ok … I’ve found a good lens! … https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?7514-HUD-Collimation-projection-Mod&highlight=reflection
IMO, this lens with Crazytom/FanOfBMS tint would be “perfect”!
Thanks M8,
it’s been a while, but I’m back online again
… just became a father for the second time, so I’ve had a very busy private life the couple of month.
ehh, I saw some discussions of the use of fatcap’s 3993 dds. Of course, no probs if one would want to use this one. But, the symbology cut-off is not very well in that file.
In my setup (also the 3993.dds) this is considerably improved: it’s what you see in this pic as well.
Regards,

also, the alpha channels are not copied the way they should, thus giving varus unwanted effects, especially when trackir or ftnoir is used… Just my 2 cents though -
I will have a special request… I will send you a file and will tell you whatI need. Come back to you as soon as posible…

Haha it’s been a long time since I last worked on the HUD!
As people mentioned my previous mod I thought I needed to jump out…
Obviously CrazyTom and FanofBMS have put in tremendous effort into making the HUD as realistic as possible, that’s hundreds of hours more than I had invested. Salute to you guys and big thanks!!
However, no offence at all but their mod was not really going in the direction where I’d personally preferred, so I have been using my own slightly adjusted version ever since…
In Version 2 of my HUD mod the projection shape is fine-tuned to fit most HUD symbologies including DED data and NO RAD message under default 3 view(considered for those without TrackIR), though the AMRAAM bore circle is still partially cut off on the top(not sure about how it is in RL)… The projection circle might be slightly bigger than in RL, but I think that’s the best compromise I could achieve. Also the green tint is made more subtle now, as not often do you turn your HUD brightness so high that the green disk clearly stands out against broad daylight. I have also managed to blur the top flat edge a bit for a more natural look as that’s the farthest projected part… I haven’t put any purple tint onto the HUD glass because as far as I know Block 50 which BMS simulates does not have that.
A picture is worth a thousand words.:) Haven’t got the DDS files now I’ll upload later…

Same here and on BMS side…
I haven’t put any purple tint onto the HUD glass because as far as I know Block 50 which BMS simulates does not have that.
It actually does have a light tint (this is mandatory for proper reflection on the glass)
Could you please make a version just including a very light purple tint on the entire glass like in my real pictures and send it to me via MP for future BMS version?

I think the tint and the yellow circle are dependent on the model and exact HUD system. MLU variants seems to be extreme with both respects while others not so much or not at all.
In this USAF viper picture there no tint, or it’s really weak (look at the sky, I can’t see a color shift). It does look a bit darker but not colored. And there is no yellow circle with the HUD on and looking directly into itSame in this HAF F-16 video , darker but not colored and no yellow circle.
Another USAF:
-
The circle on the first pic looks like a reflection of the projector glass thingy?
-
Bang on I’d say.

I don’t have the mood atm, but can verify with videos:
USAF Block 50/52s: Black to brownish tint/ slightly dark tintBlock 40/40s: Either front brown, next glass (to pilot) violet or both browsnihs, dark…
This is the Block I have the least knowledge about.Aegean AF Block 50/50/+: Violet tint
And a strong one!
Block 30/32s: Dark to brownish.Belgian/Netherlands MLUs: Dark/brownish tint.
IAF: No clue
Polish Air Force: No clue
RNoAF: MLUs, HUD seemed US Air Force Block 50 style.
Brownish means at some angles the colour looks that way.
Some of the reference for HAF/USAF etc is in this very thread!
How do I know? Spent the entire FreeFalcon dev/team/ research testing time searching for F-16 videos on an almost daily basis and watched ca 100-200-300 cockpit vids plus gained all photo reference I could get including here at BMS.:D
And I read about it.Anyone who says most Block 50s and above do not have tint has no clue.
BTW: I did NOT create any of the 3993.dds which make the circle! The only thing I did was take one of the former IT versions (with incorrect reflection on top) and modify its colour. And earlier make my own version which only relates to non TIR and Aegean Vipers.
Also, as good your work seems, master fatcap (cheers mate!), the circle IMHO still is too big compared to real HUD photos. Make that one smaller and it rocks.Cheers

PS: FOr the reference, FanOfBMS432’s mod is not only a colour mod, it is also a model mod. He gave the HUD a more real model incl. the seperation at the bottom (Where the HUD meets the ICP) and a new top line.
If you flew his model for a couple of weeks you will not want to go back, simply looks more plastic. -
Can the hud tints be reflections from the canopies? Cant see why the hud glass would have any color.

No. The colour is there to help the pilot read the HUD at all times AFAIK.
ATM really not in the mood since my usual HUD research binge takes 2-3 hours and I deleted most links and references…but I could clearly show you it is there (the tint). Maybe skip the past 10-12 pages of this thread…
Of course not every F-16 variant has the tint, and of course as well I do not know about Air Forces like the Israeli Air Force.
E.g. Early Block 30s do not have a tint and also some later Blocks.
I doubt you will find many F-16 cockpits which are 100% identical anyway, so many versions and mods.Cheers!
