Kuwait Theater - progress update
-
-
Got my ass handed to me courtesy of Saddam’s elite Republican Guard this evening. It was on Day 8 around 09.00hrs when Iraq finally captured the required objectives to hand me defeat.
In other words, I have played a campaign to completion in Kuwait Theater. I was so happy I forgot to screenshot the UI!
The downside to all this is I gave up making notes and tweaks long ago - how I have managed to make a working campaign is long since forgotten!
-
Thats GREAT NEWS Malc……:>

I miss some UI screenshot final campaign in another theater different from kto.
Keep it up, Malc!
Beer for eveyone!

Hey Malc,
I have a bunch of Iraqi jet skins. I got them from fafa’s Openskins when he still had his website up.I’m not the original author of any of them, and they’re for Freefalcon and/or Openfalcon, so you might have to manipulate the dds numbers a bit to get them to fit into your database.
If you want them, please let me know and I’ll post them up for you.
-
Hi toonces, I fully expect the skins can and will be used but I’m still a way from that stage. Concentrating on Iran tiling and te_new file currently so I know I have a good working base to which the real artists can apply much better skins and tiles, etc to. Pls post me links tothem so I at least have them for the future.

Got any new news Malc?

Work continues… been trying to get a consistent working campaign based in Kuwait which is winnable (or loseable!) on both sides, but not as easy as I hoped. Continue to tile and tweak the te_new.tac file to make a good balance on objective priorities which will drive on the campaigns. Also been in touch with a member here about creating much better tiles - need to get my ass in gear and send him the files, mind…

will there be turkish airbases in theatre such as diyarbakır ,batman like ods ?

No. ODS was a 128x128 segment theater, this is only 64x64. I have no interest in making a theater which won’t work from a Campaign POV. Heck, I am struggling to get 64 seg campaigns working without multiplying problems four-fold.

Hi Malc,
What kind of problems do you encounter in the campaigns? I’ve been doing a lot of campaign work myself lately and maybe I can help. -
Hi Malc,
What kind of problems do you encounter in the campaigns? I’ve been doing a lot of campaign work myself lately and maybe I can help.I am unable to get a consistent working ground movement. Sometimes good progress is made, sometimes not, sometimes they just seem to spend forever in Consolidation. If you would like to take a look I will get the files uploaded to a webspace for you to D/L - I have to get my asset in gear so another forum member can have a look with regards to making custom textures anyway…
-
Sure upload your campaign folder and I’ll have a look, it may take me a while though.
Some tips:
1. If there are test runs with good ground progress where you see battalions capturing objectives deep in enemy territory it’s a good sign the links, paths and parent relations are mostly fine - sorting these is the hardest part.2. Assuming good progress is made some times but not consistently it may be because of less than desirable force ratio so that no one has a big enough advantage and so no one can get to the objectives which end the campaign (as defined in the trigger files). This is decided mostly by the ground force ratio, but a strong air force helps a lot with CAS missions, especially helicopters. Don’t forget also about reserves (reinforcement) battalions which can show up well into the war and change the ratio as the war is going. Reserves can bring a campaign out of a stalemate.
3. After having enough battalions compared to the other side, there should also be enough battalions in relation to the number of higher priority cities (not just PAKS ie primary objectives). This is because after capturing high value sites the campaign engine tends to leave battalions in them for defense, so it may run out of battalions for attacking after a while and remain in consolidation state.
4. I organize the maneuvering battalions in the division - brigade - battalion hierarchy. Battalions in the same brigade do move together to achieve a common goal (ie capture an objective) and it’s awesome really It’s also more realistic. Not doing so may also work I haven’t tried.
As a more general note, if you have a doubt about how something should be done (unit flags, force ratios, division structure, triggers etc etc) Korea is an excellent (!) reference. Not just for campaigns BTW but for anything else too. You can of course also ask

Any update? Wondering If is possible to release the map without campaign so we can play with TE’s.
Thanks.

I cannot get the bloody campaign to work as I want, I have tried as much as I can but never getting consistent results makes me wonder.
I could release the map as it is right now, and yes you could build and fly TEs quite happily in the Kuwayt/Iraq/Saudi side of the terrain, but I fear you may be disappointed in the terrain. It’s not overly pretty to look at. I have spoke to a member here about custom tiles and he was prepared to help, but I’ve held off doing anything to date as I don’t want to waste his time if the campaign is not going to work. Pretty graphics don’t make an exciting theater.
At this point, I suppose I could make it available for download and ask some of the community members to have a look and offer advice if they can.

Keep going Malc…

Keep it on Malc! You are doing a Great work for all of us! :8:
IMHO theres no need for the campaign - if it would not work as u want, let it be
I thing a TEable good looking Theatre is min. as atractive as a one with working Campaign. It would really do for me -

Malc,
Why not use the old ODS tiles? I’ve always thought they looked just fine in that theater. With respect to the campaign, that’s disappointing, but not necessarily a show stopper. A really nice ODS-type campaign could be made with static ground forces and an attrition based air war; similar to what the Israel team did. I don’t see any reason to not explore that option. It’s perfectly realistic and true to life.
You could make a very beefy air-war only type campaign. There would probably be some value in inflating the Iraqi air force capabilities and deflating the coalition air power; sort of an early war air campaign to make it more interesting…
Just thinking out loud here. You should also touch base with the Israel team if you haven’t already and get some pro tips on how they got their campaigns working. We really should be transparent and share that type of info publicly. It will only help the community at large in the long run.
