AGM-84A bugs report

RDY means current selected store is ready to drop, REL means release consent has been acknowledged, i.e. you’re pressing the pickle button. If parameters are met, the weapon will be released.
Okay! That means if i am pressing the pickle button but “REL” appears, I should continue pressing until AGM-84 drop when all parameters are met. Is it correct?
Thanks

Yeah, it’s a long press, much longer than AIM-120 or even JDAM.

Hi
1. AGM-84A missiles always auto power off when shifting back from other main modes, particularly with the secend missile which ready for launch.
That is on purpose and as it should be.
2. Cant choose launch hardpoint.
You mean that MSL-STEP doesn’t work? I think you can switch to the other Harpoon, not sure what if there are 4, need to check but I don’t see a reason why it won’t work.
3. Sometimes cant be launched. The MFD sms page displays tips “RDY” to “Rel” when press launch button.
Pickle should be held to up to 6 seconds. I didn’t invent this number, this is real time. Usually the time is considerably lower than 6 seconds, but there is a high chance it could take 2-4 seconds.
4. Launch button act as “CMS-UP” and DMS faults when set “TERM: POP”, but launch button and DMS take correctly function with “TERM: SKIM” .
Launch button you mean pickle??? I cannot see how that will happen. Harpoon submodes shouldn’t affect pickle button behavior.

1. I don’t know how real but:
2. Press OSB next to hard point number in SMS format.
3. I find I cannot launch from WPN page but instead with SMS page showing.
4. Confusion. Attempting to launch the AGM-84A with WR results in countermeasures dispensing? What is “DMS fault”?
Thanks for your advice. I will try them up.
And the suitation 4. Yes, it is. Attempting to launch the AGM-84A with WR results in countermeasures dispensing.
DMS is short for HOTAS DMS function. Sorry for my shorting express.

That sounds like poor HOTAS setup to me.

Yes, #4 sounds like a keyfile/HOTAS problem.

Thanks for your suggestion too, Hawk.
I am sure something is wrong with my warthog stick hardware now, and I have sent it to a friend who has rich experiences on fixing. Maybe soft functions will completely come back after stick hardware is fixed.
The standard of comparing for the secend missile I used is based on the first missile which has no bugs to be shot out except auto power off. So, being surprised should be acceptable. I will be careful in using word “bug” in future.
After 84A has been powered on in AG mode, I’d like to shift to MSL OVERRIDE mode for gaining more AA awareness for a moment to keep safe, then go back to AG mode to continually scan sea surface to search target fleet. It
always takes several alternates before firing 84A. And 84As always auto self power off during back to AG mode from MSL OVERRIDE mode.
As your explained "That is on purpose and as it should be. ", I guess that shifting to other mode after 84As are powered on is not a good idea in current BMS version, is that right ?
Thanks again.

Hi,
Yes it’s not a good idea, but FYI I didn’t invented that, this info come from the real docs… maybe it’s a missile or Some software limitation, or maybe it’s just for not draining the Missile battery or something, I’m not totally sure of the reason, but that’s the way it is.

I can confirm bug/feature 1 and 3 from my own experience in BMS. I have never seen a Harpoon missile irl, nor a picture of Viper with such a load and I personally don’t know any Pilot with Harpoon experience to ask. So it’s hard to say if thats either bug or real live behaviour. But missile step works fine and I never had problems to choose skim or pop up mode. That must be your HOTAS. I guess its normal, that you see REL while you pickle and nothing happens. Sometimes it takes at least 4 s, maybe the aircraft isn’t within (speed) limits, I don’t know. But definitely one bug is that the Harpoons run straight into Aegean islands like dumb bombs, as far as I know they should evade or climb, so I need to approach sometimes 30 nm or even closer to get free sight and achieve a good hit.

Not really, actually. IRL sea skimmers use only RAlt sensor to maintain their altitude, with a healthy dose of filtering to remove sea variability. That’s not a sensor good enough to produce good terrain following. Only very recent Harpoons and Exocets can be programmed with waypoints that would allow to go over an island.
