Iff.ini
-
Hey guys,
Im experimenting with the iff.ini and i have a question.
Reading the tech manual, I cannot understand how the M1-3Mask works. Am i supposed to enter a number from 0-3? If so, how does that affect the iff policy? -
As far as I undersood it, the code generation is random anyway and you cannot decide of specific codes
You can only decide to use different algorithm to randomly set codes - and that is done with the mask setting.
I do not know the possible value you can set to change the maskTo be honest, I always personnally left the mask value at default and my custom IFF Policy files have Always worked fine.

Thanks RD. Im just trying to see to what length i can take the IFF policy change.

yeah, it works fine, I use a custom Policy file for my Te’s and it works pretty well.
but that doesn’t include the possibility for the Te’s editor to create his own custom codes (not that it is really needed anyway), at least not that I know of. -
Any chance that a future update brings customisable IFF codes, for those who wish to delve into that? I think we can already in the IFF tab(?), but a tool outside BMS would be useful.
E.g. I’ve seen a few screenshots of VFWs running civilian airliner intercepts. If the M3 code is known, that could be used to locate it in a very crowded airspace. Or it may introduce human error, where the mission planner messed up the codes, and IFF is “broken”.EDIT: Also, this may help in editing the IFF.ini: https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?35528-4-34-IFF-documentation&p=497853&viewfull=1#post497853

Wouldn’t it be mode 2?

Wouldn’t it be mode 2?
No, M3, C and S are the only ones that are used by both civil and military. M3 in civil is called Mode A.

Ah my bad, go them confused for some reason.

maybe from a/c. dat file? something is mentioned in the manual but havent investigated it.
something else that has arised from eagle-eye’s post. If i put a civilian a/c on the red side(team3 on the iff.ini) will he squawk the correct M3 for the blue side(team2 iff.ini)? or it has to be on a neutral team or an ally one for it to squawk the correct one? -
Just to be clear, there is no IFF.ini file. For each mission, you have a MissionName.iff file that decides what are the codes used by AI and what are the defaults in the DTC.
The IFF tab only affects your DTC, aka what will be the codes initialized in your jet when the DTC is loaded.
The mask can be any value from 0 to 32677(I need to add that to the doc). The influence on the generated codes is not straightforward to predict but it will have an avalanche effect : if you tweak it by one, it will drastically change all the codes.
You can do the civil airliner scenario if you set it to another team, without mode rotation for mode 3, and the TE creator just check what is the m3 code of the pseudo airliner to the guys flying.
