New "heavy" options in the comms ?
-
Hello everyone,
I can’t find any reference to it in the manual nor in the forum.
What is the new “heavy” option in the ATC comms menu ? What does it do ?Thanks
Flow.

@Flow32 I believe it tells ATC you are heavy with fuel/ordnance, and need the long runway for approach.
-
@Quasi_Stellar ok thanks for the info. If a dev can confirm that would be amazing
-
@Flow32 confirmed…
-
@Badger Awesome, thanks, that clears it up then.
If full of fuel + heavy A/G ordnance = request a heavy landing. -
@Flow32 it’s in the release notes for U2 … probably some doc files need updating tho.
-
@airtex2019 ok thanks, missed it. All clear now

Absolute n00b question here but when does a “heavy” aircraft actually become “heavy”?
Is a jet with 3 full bags of fuel + A-A weapons (2 IR, 4? radar, full guns) considered heavy?
At what weight or percent of a certain weight does an aircraft become heavy?
Is a jet with 3 full bags of fuel + some A-G ordnance configuration heavy then does not become heavy after it’s burned a certain amount of fuel?Thanks!
-
@Atlas it depends on the aircraft. Some of them don’t have the same weight for the take off and landing parameter. so if you take off full fuel and 2 bombs and rockets and shortly after you want to land it will be a heavy landing. so if you have a chance you can dump a fuel , or eject the ordenances to be within the limits
-
@Atlas I think it’s less a statement about your aircraft weight … just a brevity-keyword to request the longest runway available.
(Pilot’s responsibility to know the weight of his aircraft and the lengths of various runways at the airport in question… and take into account weather conditions.)
For KTO this feature is great, for Seoul airbase … both runways there are fairly short – and close to parallel – so in an F-16 you definitely want the longest one, almost always.
-
I think of “heavy” as a jet that could run into trouble stopping before end-of-runway on a shorter runway. Like landing with a 30000 lbs jet on a 7000 ft runway. AFAIR the “heavy” call also will give you the runway that has arrestor cables
-
I guess I’m asking specific for the F-16. I understand that different aircraft will have different parameters due to config, landing gear, etc. etc. so let’s just limit it to our beloved Viper.
-
@Atlas
Sure, that was my reference. A heavy Viper would have a weight of 30-40000 lbs.For instance, the Block 50 flight in the AAR training mission with two bags. If you fill up the external tanks at the tanker and immediately go to land at Seoul, you have to perform a very good landing to stay inside the runway, esp on the shorter of the two runways.
Or in the dumb bombs TE, you are quite heavy when you spawn and it can be good practice to try and land right away

Already updated for U3

@Atlas I would assume that if you are landing in CAT III you are heavy.
-
@SemlerPDX I land in whatever CAT I want to, dammit!! Don’t you be CAT-shaming me!!
@jayb Thanks for that info!
-
@Atlas You’re not fat, you’re just “heavy”.
-
@Ricky I don’t go for that clean, sleek, acrobatics look. I prefer the look that means business.
-
@Atlas - You are the C-130 to his F-104.
-
@Flow32 - in the civil air traffic world, a “heavy” is a larger airliner - like a 747, 777, or 787. But for our purposes calling “heavy” to ask for the longer runway does make some sense…and as I recall you can’t dump fuel in our Viper(s). At least I’ve never found that switch.
Question though - in the RW there are weight restrictions for engaging the arresting gear and not snap the wire - does BMS model that?
