@SoBad What would you consider as a bare minimum graphics card to run this thing. I have a 3080TI 12gb
-
@SoBad Thank you so much for the detailed review!! I’m still on the original Oculus Rift CV1, and it’s age is so apparent now - heavy and hot and externally tracked, and only option for wireless is a bit of kit that costs half as much as the latest Quest entry (well, maybe not that much but enough to make it a bad buy over a new version Quest).
Really want to upgrade to something in the same family so my existing VR library will carry over, lots of titles I can get many more hours out of, and waiting for native wireless options. Quest 3 might be the one that replaces my CV1 (that is, if I find the dosh to save before the next version comes out, lol).
Cheers SoBad, much appreciated!

MailMan, I’m sorry, but I don’t consider myself to be an authority on comparable analytics for graphic cards. I can only say that my particular setup (see sig) is very adequate.

@SoBad Hi! I’m currently looking for a VR Headset mostly for flightsim and have few question.
Multiple people over the internet report having issue with charging while playing, Have you tryed the headset with the cable? And was the cable sufficient to keep the battery charged while playing a flightsim? thank you!

I’ve been playing almost every night with my new Quest 3, sometimes up to 3 hours, sometimes with a cable, sometimes without. I have NEVER had a ‘charging problem’.
But then again, I also have an elite head strap that has an extra battery pack. So I have no idea how long you can play using just the main headset battery. Sorry.

Is usage of the Quest 3 still tied to a facebook / meta account? I think the requrirement was dropped a while ago for the older quest models.
All the best,
Uwe

@hoover Tied to a meta, oculus or FB account, which at the end is all the same. So yes. Don’t worry though.

Do you have technical issues as I did? I solved mine today after half a week of tinkering.Turns out that the steam vr resolution was cranked up more than native resolution of the headset.
I set it manually to 100 % then all of a sudden I can enjoy the game fluently. Also, Oculus settings are at 72hz and 1.0 rendering resolution.
To get it working, I do the following :
Start headset
Connect link cable
Initiate oculus link
Open launcher and click enable vr
Wait for steam vr to start
Run bms -

FWIW, This is completely normal SteamVR behavior on every VR headset. It’s is supposed to correct for distortion and other issues. I don’t know how exactly they determine the value, but the 8 different VR headset I’ve used do this. You also have the layer of the wide view Pimax having different ones when parallel projections are selected. So technically, that is what SteamVR believes you should use to get the expected quality of native resolution, but YMMV and find what works best for you.

I just asked Bard the following:
“I use the Falcon BMS simulator, which recently released version 4.37.3, in VR mode with the Meta Quest 3 VR headset. I’m looking for guidance regarding the best settings for the Oculus supporting software and the required SteamVR software.”
Bard replied:
"Below are some recommended settings for the Oculus supporting software and SteamVR to use with Falcon BMS 4.37.3 in VR mode with the Meta Quest 3 headset:
Oculus supporting software
Refresh rate: 90 Hz
Render scale: 1.0x (2784x1408)SteamVR
Refresh rate: 90 Hz
Resolution per eye: 392% (2756 x 2816)These settings will provide a good balance of performance and image quality. However, you may need to adjust them depending on your system’s capabilities and your personal preferences.
Here are some additional tips for improving your VR experience in Falcon BMS:
- Make sure that your graphics card drivers are up to date.
- Close any unnecessary background applications.
- If you are experiencing performance issues, try reducing the resolution per eye in SteamVR.
- You can also try using the OpenVR FSR mod to improve performance.
- If you are using the Oculus Quest 3, try using the Oculus Air Link feature to connect to your PC wirelessly. This can improve the immersion of the VR experience.
- Note: You will need to use a third-party tool such as Virtual Desktop or OpenTrack to use Falcon BMS in VR mode."
I’m going make the above recommended adjustments later tonight and see if it improves already very good VR performance. Just FYI for anyone else who might be interested.

@SoBad hi SoBad, thank you for writing up all the details you found regarding this headset. Definitely considering getting it for my first VR headset. Does it require base stations to use with BMS ?
Cheers,
JayB -
No, Quest uses inside out tracking with internal cameras…
-
@dolphin Thanks, good to know that base stations are not required for BMS with the Quest 3. A bit more space in the budget
-
@jayb
Yep and tracking works surprisingly good plus you don´t need a cable to connect it top the PC. Although on longer sessions you have to connect it to a charger. But that’s nothing compared to the clunky cables of a HP Reverb or other non wireless headset. -
I have the Quest 3 as well and I’m quite happy with it.
Even though I have a 3080, 32GB ram and a 5900x, I’m struggeling a little with performance. That is acceptable but i find it hard to find my buttons in my cockpit. I’ll probably get used to that but it’s a bit of a hassle. -
@b0bl00i Does the pass through not help with that? As far as I can tell the Quest3 can be double tapped to give a look at surroundings

In my experience, it’s far quicker and easier to just sneak-peek out the bottom .
