The Persian Cats are something else no doubt - I read that book as well and if you read some of Saddam Hussein’s biographies in conjunction with some other stuff the numbers pretty much add up with what Cooper and the other cat put together in that book.
As for the model I caught that pun - well deserved :). Let’s just say when the D is done converting it to A-spec would involve:
- beaver tail
- engines/exhaust nozzles
- some antennas
- glove vanes
- engine shroud
- upper aft fuselage
- air ducts and gunports on front fuselage
…aaaand the pit :).
Either way no biggies - less than 20hrs.
Hehe. If you can pull something like that off in 20hrs, I’d call you amazing.
A really cool aviation blog by the name of “The Boresight” has some cool articles on Iranian F-14s - you might need to do a bit of scrolling to find them:

Hope the year continues to find you well @stingray_SIX_TWO

This round about answers any questions I may have still had regarding model details. What an epic built this guy pulled off.

But you have build the cat yourself in 3D, which is IMHO more advanced
than building scale kits.BTW. what is the current state of your project and your further roadmap, Pete?
Funny sidenote: I was just thinking yesterday that this thread would deserve a bump.
Cheers, :yo:

He’s Back! Thank the Stars I was hoping Stingray would return to us!
Much has Changed. There’s not One but TWO Theaters that could really use some Tomcat Love now…
And LS, I have thought maybe twice a month about Bumping, but I have always been hesitant about it. You are not alone in that sentiment.

LSThough we all started i guess from this right? We just moved to another level

Several things about that video - I agree, wow…
I also kind of think about it this way: just about any hobby is very expensive. In the case of the kit, the kit itself is probably pretty high up there. THEN you need the resources to make the kit impressive, and that stuff is just not cheap at all.
In the case of 3D modeling, you can get some very nice software for a huge sum, or a very affordable price, and the results can be much the same. Same thing with raster/vector art programs. And, you can always go the free route, and no, I’m not speaking of pirating. GIMP and Inkscape work just fine, although I never allowed myself to tolerate Blender - I’ll stick with an AC3D license any day.
So, I’d now say that the real expense in virtual modeling is getting the resources, and that tends to go like this:
1. Look up stuff online with mixed results - you can get some great info basically for free… and you can also end up with crap. Regardless, some people can take only this, run with it, and make it great… others not so much.
2. After websites stop cutting it, and information starts to conflict among those references, you start looking for books, and probably start to spend good money. The costs only go up from here…
3. The books lead you to the source material, and now you subject yourself to paying the museum staff to make a copy of the flight manuals for you… or any other related reference material. The really annoying part about this bit is that this stuff, so long as it’s sufficiently old, is declassified government material, and it would be really nice if they could just send you a file for a minimal cost. But those places don’t work like that.…Last advice about point #3: be really careful about buying old flight manuals online. You need to really understand what you’re looking for, and the quality might not be all that great.

I don’t think doing aircraft model and 3D modelling is comparable
3D modelling is actually more comparable to create the plastic models moulds or scratching a full model like some are able to do.
These industry guys do the same as you guys and run into the same problems identified by Thaeris.
And believe me the discussion about forum guys looking for the smallest error from manufacturing companies are way worse than the stuff we sometimes face here
In the end it all comes down to the source used. And even Tamiya made huge mistakes in the past, so it happens to the best of them. The translation of doing plastic models into the sim word to me is is more like skinning you guys great 3D models
I am pretty experienced with plastic models and my small tries at 3D modelling were very bad. Yet my few attempts at skinning went quite without too much hassle -

Yet my few attempts at skinning went quite without too much hassleI could not disagree with that… indeed in skining scale modelling helps a lot i believe. But as i said it is a bit helpfull also to build a 3d model cause (for me for example) when you have build from 14 years old about 10 Phantoms (LOL) in various scales from 1/144 to 1/32 then you kinda start to know every aspect of the plane and if you use some bibliography as well then u surely know ;). I have another 3 to finish -B (19th CAG), -E AUP (just to put the decals) and -E euro1 USAF in 1/48

Interesting Reply there Stingray…
Is there perhaps any chance we could get a model Screenshot? Been so long since the last I’m sure everybody would absolutely LOVE to see progress on it!

Good news for you, Stingray, and many other good friends here too, I think.
As rumours tell, at U.S. Navy are missing their Tomcats because they still are the only way to struggle (and possibly defeat) the revamping Russian Red Fleet overseas menace. Everyone can ask U.K. Home Fleet some details about, for example.
Interesting that, isn’t it?
With best regards,
