BMS Manuals in paperback
-
Yes, great idea Sandbox, I don’t know why I never thought of this before, I have used Lulu for a couple of books I brought from the USA, that were on very obscure Japanese Sword topics, but the price and quality was great. I had forgotten that you can publish anything yourself there, as you say, if RedDog is cool, a nicely bound Dash-1, with set of charts would be excellent…As you say, even though I have all this stuff on the laptop, nothing beats a manual in the hand, cheers, Mark

The idea is interesting, indeed
Let me get my stuff organized after coming back from a week holiday and i’ll chime in…realistically, red dog has put his under standard copyright, and the BMS team have neglected to display a copyright, so one would assume they intend to use a standard one.
these files are made freely available in an electronic format. there is no legal ambiguity in printing a physical copy for backup purposes. at least, not under DMCA, and not under australian copyright law. I am not sure on copyright law overseas, but as I am an Australian citizen, in Australia, it doesn’t bother me that much either.
It’s not quite about Copyright law mumbo jumbo people, it’s more about respecting work from your pairs
that to me is rather quite more relevant than law -
are you implying disrespect has been offered?
-
no not at all, quite the contrary
I appreciated the link being removed to let me have a chance to manage myself my work -
How about getting some cheap 99$ tablet, and save some trees, huh ??? Start thinking people!!!
I reckon there is far more damage to the planet done by manufacture of ’ gizmo’s and gadgets ’ than the commercial growing of paper. A product that is perhaps the most readily recycled of all. Save some trees?? Words fail me

Its not obvious to me the difference between printing out on my colour laser printer using expensive retail media or using a print bureau with their cheaper commercial materials. Ive no doubt both routes have been used ever since the 1st falcon related pdf ever appeared (from whatever source). Its to be expected and perhaps the only difference here is that its being talked about. I once bought an extra copy of falcon 4.0 on ebay and it came with a high quality ring bound SP3/SP4 manual. Naturally any commercial exploitation needs to be prevented where possible.

For me, it’s not just the “printing” that I’m after but the binding of the pages. I used to soft/hard-bind my own stuff but I don’t have the tools now and I find the 2-ring binders to be just accidents-waiting-to-happen. I use 4-ring binders now for any serious reading material, but a good perfect-bound book would be better.

Hi, just got another volume
-
Now you’re just showing off

I’d love to buy the manual in the smae format as sandb0x
I hope Red Dog can get something sorted
-
Yeah, I’m working on it

PDF’s are cheap, but nothing beats a hardcopy! I think most will agree and as long as the printing costs are reasonable (and they appear to be) many of us would prefer to have it printed and don’t mind mind paying for something we use so often. I truely miss those big fat “ring bound” manuals we used to get with the sims 10 years ago. Great reading while sitting in your favorite chair in the morning, drinking your coffee and getting yourself and the puter fired up to fly a mission!

Before any pro printing it would be good to have the errors weeded out first, be they technical or just typos. Perhaps anyone interested could be given a deadline (2-4 weeks?) to submit anything they have spotted.

Because a $99 tablet is cheap, as in garbage, and not worth the energy put into making it. Trees get re-planted by the paper companies usually 2-to-1 or 3-to-1 when harvested.
I hate when people ignore simple facts.
This is a false propaganda to shut people up - they are all re-planting.
Overall, a lot more trees are disappearing, than get planted each year (ratio is still alarming, at about 150km^2 every day). Every piece of paper counts, and people who don’t care about nature, are the primary cause of degradation, and people who print that ONE more page, which doesn’t need to be printed, simply don’t care - no excuses, this is a game we talk about here, not a life saver. What are you gonna do when the game stops working, which will happen eventually. Are you going to bin the manual, or keep it forever and ever? In a tablet, you can simply delete it, with no harm to nature.
Also keep in mind that a lot of energy is going into paper printing.
Maybe $99 is not the best to buy, but it was just to point out that people should change habits sooner than later, and stop being stubborn and selfish. -
Aha,so you want to make sure you don’t use too much paper when you go for a number 2.

okay gents.
The dash one is soon to be ready on lulu.
It’s 189 pages, A4 format, Perfect bound (glued).I am making two versions:
1. full colours - printing price is estimated around 30-35€
2. B&W - printing price is estimated around 9-12€
Both prices ex shippingI’ll order the first copy and see it in the flesh before giving out the links to order it.
In the meantime, here’s the cover artwork -

Your $99 tablet or any tablet at the minute will not decompose very well, nor is it recycled very well. I thank you for your point of view, however this is a Flight sim forum after all. You cant play rock, paper, scissors with a tablet now can you?

You cant play rock, paper, scissors with a tablet now can you?
Sure you can, it just becomes: Rock, tablet, scissors. Rock crushes tablet and scissors, scissors scratch tablet… and the tablet just loses every round. It’s a conspiracy!!
On topic, i threw together a bunch of the PDF documents at lulu.com a few days after i read the original post and received my copy yesterday. Looks SOOOO hot (wife was unimpressed).

I was going to print out a few manuals and offer them up for the price of materials + shipping, but I like my manuals nice and sturdy so I’ll be waiting for Red Dog to finalize his work and will be getting my copy as well.
Suggestion: maybe a version number on the manuals? I’m sure things will change later on and would be nice to be able to keep track whether the manual is still up to date and what errata is needed.
-
Hey Red Dog, will we be able to choose the binding option? In something like that, it’s way easier to use spiral bound.
Cheers, Mark
