Can someone tell if this sounds about right.
In PRE mode handoff can only be achieved with FCR? The missile is slaved to the FCR. Boresighting is required?
In VIS mode handoff can only be achieved with TGP? The missile is slaved to the TGP. Boresighting is not required or is it?
In BORE there is no handoff since the missile is used to lock and guide itself to target.
Actually, no. Check out p.148 of the -34.
- if Mav in Pre, can do a TGP handoff, or FCR, whichever is SOI
- I don’t believe TGP would handoff in VIS, but you wouldn’t need to. VIS is like BORE, but with a slewable LOS via the wpn page.

AFAIK handoff works only in PRE.
Because only PRE allows you to use FCR or TGP support.VIS and BORE are using only MAV camera and HUD, no TGP nor FCR suppotred targeting in those 2 modes.
VIS and BORE are useful when firing from close range at targets you see on HUD.
However boresight may be helpful because without boresight maverick HUD circle is not really well aligned. And the strategic value or rather tactical advantage of PRE mode is that you can use TGP or FCR to detect targets and quickly handoff them to Maverick. When using VIS or BORE you are limited to HUD and MAV camera.

Sorry for the resurrectus and DFQ, but I’m having to relearn everything all over again- is it still possible to handoff a HARM target to a Mav ? If so, where’s the procedure ?
No. As far as I know, it not possible to “handoff” a HARM target to any other system …. at least not in BMS.

HAS Mode is basically the HARM Missile going “Hey, I’m detecting Emissions from this type of target” It doesn’t give positional or range data on whatever is emitting. You can take guesses based on your RWR or if you’ve reconned the area beforehand and put a PPT threats. It’s good if you’re in an aircraft that doesn’t have the ability to mount a HTS, like certain Blocks of the F-16 and the F/A-18s. Outside of that, if your craft is mounting HARMs, the game will automatically add an HTS if it can mount it.

Bummer. So what good is HAS mode if the missile is handing off to itself ? I never considered HARM handing off to the LANTIRN was an incorrect implementation in the original F4. O well, guess it’s time to find a new tactic. There have been some threads/posts about the HARM integrating with the TGP. I’m not clear whether they’re saying it does happen in BMS (I didn’t think it did) or whether it does happen in RL.
PB Mode is my prefered HARM Mode. Only thing you get (in BMS) with the HTS is the HAD page, which is great for SA and the ‘easy’ lock-fire mode. But HAS isn’t ‘bad’ for SA, just not as simple as HAD.

Luckily for you, the Fine folks at BMS have provided a training mission on the HARM and accompanying documentation. I’d suggest you give it a few goes and get used to all the new toys so to speak
