What just happened..?

I was returning from an OCA strike, receiving vectors at 4,000 feet, and 300 knots, plenty of fuel.
Then the aircraft went boom.
No master caution light, or VMS caution, so I assume no warning panel notifications, though this underlines the idea of checking them at each phase of the flight.
A few SA-2 launches were detected coming off the target, and there was quite a bit of AAA fire, but I didn’t notice any impacts, or damage.
The only thing that comes to mind is if I received damage just after bomb release, and the caution light came on for a hit at the same time as it was coming on for stores config.
But no sign of damage, no difficulties with aircraft handling … nothing.

Campaign or TE?
-
AA IR missile?

It was a campaign, and within sight of what must have been Kunsan.
I passed two confirmed friendlies that must have been coming directly out of Kunsan a short while earlier.
If it was an air-to-air missile then it was a very sneaky, and a very brave, MiG pilot.

Change to CAT I.
-
Indeed… may have been a freak incident / accident

Mystery solved with the ACMI tape. Tower forgot about me and I ended up over an SA-13. I actually requested vectors a second time and was told to hold altitude and airspeed.
Those people need more coffee.

Come on, who forgot who?
Or maybe is Kunsan close to the fence in this scenario?

How the tower can know?
You don’t have any RWR in an ATC. -
Change to CAT I.
There is nothing dangerous at all about being actual Cat 1 but having the switch in Cat 3. Especially for straight and level flight.
-
I think tower has taken a distinct dislike to me.
In the next mission I had not been cleared down to 3,000 before final. But I did get to improvise a landing from 4,000 feet. I also learned how fast the end of the runway approaches when you land a little long.

aTC is quite efficient in 4.33 and never forgets you…
However , this is true that there is no check that the orbit point is not in hostile territory …

I will have to put it down to a missed call. But I would have expected it to give me vectors when I requested it. I think I will probably make a point of using TACAN to monitor range from now on.

Would be neat if the ATC was able to say have us hold nearby and only descend via TRP…

don’t worry for ATC improvements
