Cougar force mod - what are the options
-
i’m looking to mod a TM Cougar to the “force sensing” internals
what kind of guidance is available
TIA
-
All the guidance you need is here. http://www.realsimulator.com/html/fssb.html Its not that hard to install. Mine went easy.
-
Basically, I beleive there are three options
1. FCC3 made by White Eagle http://vipercore.nl/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=75&Itemid=473
2. FSSB made by realsimulator.com
3. Ribbstick made by Dave ??I’ve used 1 & 2 both high quality and highly recommended.
the major difference is that the FCC3 can fit into stock cougar base or simulated stick mount, the FSSB will only fit the cougar base. -
Badger, how much is the FCC3?
-
I’ve had mine so long I honestly don’t remember an email would need to be sent to White Eagle for current pricing and availability.
I beleive the pricing is comparable to the FSSB R2 ~
-
For the same money, then I would certainly recommend the R2 with its sensors used by the the European Space Agency, Airbus, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority etc. I can attest to its excellence in my 6 years of ownership. Never used the FCC 3 though, so I can’t comment on it.
-
alright - great summary
thx
i had seen the FSSB and FCC3 - wasn’t sure what other options were out there…
this helps me decide my next course of action
-
hey, here’s a question…
is there a meaningful difference between FSSB R1 and R2?
what if you could get a TM-Cougar w/ R1 at a discount - ??
-
At a discount, I would snap it up.
Mine worked flawlessly, I changed to the FCC because of the better fit in my pit.
FCC has also been trouble free for years now. -

At the same price; i would recomment the FCC3
Although not marketted with high value space component resisting to extreme temperature (unlikely to happen in a pit room) the service in case of problem is much better than the service RS provided up to now

Also see the following:
Francisco Pizarro - FSR mod.
http://www.foinikas.org/ftp/public/uploads/LOW%20COST%20FORCE%20SENSING.pdfCheap and DIY. No permanent changes to your Cougar either.
I just ordered the parts and will be doing a writeup as soon as I find a suitable piece of metal.

The difference is that the sensors last longer. R1 uses car industry sensors and R2 uses aerospace industry sensors. R2 lasts 10x longer with 100,000,000 operations. Its all in the manual you can get from the link I posted.

Having both FCC and FSSB I will not say any prices in public, no need to and there might not reflect the current pricing. Best is to directly contact all parts and get all necessary answers.
I consider my FSSB-R3 one of the best purchases I have ever made. Using it with the better Warthog stick, a 13deg fw-lean adapter and a rl DMS hat in place of the old unrealistic to both Cougar and Warthog I think is the closest thing to the rl deal. Never had to reset or calibrate, it is really p’n’p. RS is also creating a new firmware specific for BMS and F-16.

I also own fssb r2 and I think it is a very, very good product.
I also use the warthog stick mounted on the cougar+r2 base and I adm very happy with it. Out it’s very precise and imho sensors are of a very high quality.
In fact this warthog stick + cougar r2 modded base is an interim solution until I save the money to buy the FSSB R3.

I meant (I own a) FSSB-R3… I need vacations…
-
Well - Im on an FCC-3 Cougar, and its been fantastic for me, a great upgrade from my previous stick (X-65F). Can 100% recommend. Just need a proper mounting for it now, although making do with a clamp and the stock base works well enough for now.
Have not tried FSSB before so cannot comment, but I can say Ive had no issues with WhiteEagle on support for the FCC mod.
-
i also unintentionally hit very hard the cougar handle while the stick was bolted to the support with no noticeable problems to FCC3 (i would not suggest to perform crash tests on the unit anyhow
)
-
Or if you are so inclined and don’t want to spend loads of money you can mod your Cougar to force sensing by looking at this thread

A big Probrlem of FSSB is the fact taht it does not really fit into a Cockpit… ist too big, there is just FCC the only useable Option.
-
I have a FCC-1 (yes, the first generation) and the FCC-3. Both work famously and the customer support is so good that I’d buy the next generation if there was one with significant improvements.
That being said, if you can deal with a positional stick and don’t have to have a FBW static stick, the stock WartHog FSS is a great value and can be made to work with your Cougar TQS using RealSimulator’s USB adaptor (TUSBA).
