There’s really no confusion about it. Yes it is naturally a boom tanker, but it is often configured to be prove and drogue friendly. As I said, I have executed both in real life. The probe and drogue config is not unusual. It is frequently used.

RE: Tankers
Not true. It can be configured with a basket on the end of the book or with MIPR pods. I’ve refueled off of a 135 in both configurations.

RE: Any possible way to come out from Spin ??
Maybe I can add something to the discussion as I have flown both aircraft in real life. (A tad over 1000 hrs in the F-18, and just over 300 currently in the mighty Block 30 F-16).
The current USAF block 30 (analog flight control) procedure for out of control is:
Controls - Release
Throttle - IdleIf in an inverted stall or spin
Rudder - Opposite Yaw Direction
MPO Switch - OVRD and HOLD
Stick - Cycle in phaseThis is the “rocking” to get the plane to build some airspeed to recover. Typically you are looking for 200 KIAS. If you are passing 6000’ AGL and the plane is not recovering, you eject. You definitely don’t want to throttle up when you are out of control. You have less than ideal airflow through the intake. You’re just asking for compressor stall issues. Likewise, you don’t want to put the gear down. It is G and speed limited, and has limited tolerance for lateral forces. There’s no sense recovering from a departure, just to have to belly land when the gear is wrecked.
As for the F-18, the RCAF procedure is:
Controls - Release/Feet off Rudders/Speed Brake In
Throttles - IdleIf recovery indicated by AoA and yaw tones removed, side forces subside, and airspeed accelerating through 180 KIAS - Recover
Passing 6000’ AGL and dive recovery not initiated - Eject
If in a spin:
If command arrows present:
- Lateral Stick - full with arrows
If command arrows not present:
- Spin Recovery Switch - RCVY
- Lateral Stick - full with arrows
When rotation stops:
- Lateral Stick - Smoothly Neutral
- Spin Recovery Switch - Norm
Passing 6000’AGL and dive recovery not initiated - Eject
Overall for BMS, I find the Hornet fun to fly, but the flight model is pretty far off. The Hornet performs far too well in terms of speed and thrust, especially in the high 20s and low 30s. When loaded up, the Hornet is slow. Supersonic flight is difficult to achieve. We learned early on that the F-18 cannot run from a dogfight. However, the high AoA handling characteristics make it a fantastic slow speed dogfighter. It is very controllable at low speeds, and departures from controlled flight are very rare with modern flight control software.
Not sure how useful this is in a sim, but those are the real procedures. Happy flying!

RE: BMS 4.33U3 Crash on End Mission in Campaign
Ok. Still had an identical problem that was solved by running windowed mode.

RE: BMS 4.33U3 Crash on End Mission in Campaign
I had a problem like that where BMS would CTD on me every time I exited a mission at the same point you describe. Are you running Window 10 by chance? The only thing that has worked for me, is to run the game in windowed mode. It doesn’t affect the 3D environment at all, but it makes the 2D stuff a bit smaller to work with. Better than crashing after spending an evening on a flight though.

RE: Crash on mission end
Well, that didn’t do it. BMS crashed on exit again. Seems to happen every 2 to 3 flights. The only thing that seems to work is deleting the dx9 file every time. It’s a total pain. When it crashes, it also doesn’t leave a crashlog, so I can’t even see what’s up. Hoping for a fix in U4. Until then, I may give up on playing. It happens in single player campaign, I’ve already deleted the movies, there doesn’t seem to be a reason for this. I’m running windows 10, and bms 4.33U3. Very frustrated.

RE: Crash on mission end
To early to tell if it’s a permanent fix, but I wiped my display drivers with DDC and performed a clean install with nbidia. Only two test flights so far, but both worked. I still have the videos removed from the video folder as well.

RE: Bug? Crashes when leaving simulaton at 1920 x 1080
I’m having the same issue running a smart tv as a monitor. I’ll try the external display thing tonight and see. The UI thing sounds like a pain though.

RE: Crash on mission end
So, it’s crashing again on mission exit. It seems to be when it tried to switch from the 3D cockpit to the 2D UI. Every 2-3 flights. I exit bms after each flight and restart. Seems that the only thing that works is to delete the dx9 file and start again. It’s annoying though, because I lose credit for every second or third sortie. It’s getting old having to refly them all the time.

RE: Ff you could have one thing in the next update it would be…
I’d like a bit of an update to AWACS comm. instead of just telling you where the closest group was, if it could include the size of the group, and type of aircraft, that would more more realistic and helpful. I’d really love an actual picture, but I could see that being tough to program.

RE: BVR, WTF?
BFM as a term refers to Basic Fighter Maneuvers and means within visual range (WVR) air combat. When you start talking BVR engagements, you are in the realm of ACT (air combat tactics). For what it’s worth, there is absolutely nothing realistic about anything in Top Gun. Very entertaining, but that’s about it!
There are many reasons to trespass inside MAR, it doesn’t necessarily mean you screwed up. It has a lot to do with what your risk level is, whether or not that target is aware of you, and how badly you need that target to go away. Sometimes you might need to bust MAR to get through a target blocking your path home, or maybe turning away will fly you back into a SAM MEZ you don’t wanna trespass. Maybe you are the only fighter between the enemy and the strike package/HVAA you are tasked to protect. You’re pretty unpopular as an Escort or OCA fighter if you run away and let the bomb droppers or AWACS get shot. Many on here have given great unclassified tips on how to operate in BMS. Discussion beyond basic definitions rapidly gets into classified realms.

RE: SU-35 goes less than half expected top speed
What did you have on it for loadout? Keep in mind that the advertised top speed is typically in a clean jet, no pylons.

RE: Crash on mission end
Not sure why it would have been causing crashes on the first mission, but moving the video files to a temp folder seems to have worked for me. 4 sorties in, and so far no crashes. Maybe I was doing so awesome, that I won the campaign after the first flight!

RE: Crash on mission end
I’ll try the video thing tonight. I’m reading that Windows 10 creators update is causing game crashes, and also nvidia drivers have been causing memory leaks. I’ll look into both of those as well. I’m running the gtx 1070 and have 32 gigs of ram, so I really shouldn’t be having issues with either, but I’ll check.

RE: Crash on mission end
I haven’t tried moving the video files yet, but can try this evening. The campaign start videos work for me though, and the game crashes after even my first campaign mission. Would a video attempt to play even after the very first mission early on day 1?
I had been trying to fly with a TGP without carrying LGBs. I read somewhere on earlier versions that caused issues. Any chance that is still a problem?

RE: Crash on mission end
I am having the same issue in 64 bit. Game crashes to desktop trying to exit a mission. In 32 bit, as soon as I try to taxi, the jet explodes in place. I am running no mods. This is new behavior since update 3. Getting frustrated. I’ve tried deleting the acmi (which I don’t use), the briefing file, and the dx9 file. Nothing is working. All of my crashes are on single player campaign.
