The step from TrackIR 3 to 5 is immense. There is simply no comparison. Both tracking angle, fps and resolution improve which make for a much better and smoother experience.

From TrackIR 4 to 5 the step up is not as huge. It’s mostly higher precision due to improved resolution and subsampling. If you’re choosing between 4 and 5 I see no reason to save a few bucks and get the 4 - the improvement is certainly worth the price difference. But if you already have a 4 and wonder if you should buy a 5 it’s a much closer call. Personally I would not hesitate - the 5 is better, and when you’re in a turning fight it makes a huge difference, but then I fly WWII planes as well where looking around is a lot more important.

In the UK Maplins have a IR LED with a 40 degree beam angle YH70M this is the same as the recommended SFH485P. One assumes if these were to be filled down the angle may increase.

I did not understand very much, but will guess and answer… I am using a kind of IR diodes bought in Brazil, these are not the “osram” ones very good ones, but I have made flat the tip of the “lamp”. I need to make better the cap clip and adjust the dimensions of course. I can say in truth it is working nice now. I need to make the cam save the settings in order to not have to adjust it often. Why use point tracker when it seems FacetrackNoIR have incorporated the Freetrack protocol into their software?

from my experience, you should have very fast and powerful system to use FacetrackNoIR flawlessly.
on my system: i3 2,9ghz, it is too choppy and unplayable for my taste.

on the other hand, pointtracker use far less resources,
so it run a lot smoother on my system.

you can try it for yourself.

to make it more responsive, you can move the smoothing slider all to the left (=0),
that is the setting I use.

I have a trackIr 5 and I encounter a very similar problem to this one: “The other thing I couldn’t get around was this. If I mark the option to make the z axis control the fov, I can only zoom when looking forward. If I move the view to any place other than forward, moving my head closer to the trackir sensor doesn’t give any zoom. What I have to do is zoom in while looking to the hud then looking to the side to search for things. As you can imagine, it is quite difficult to find the correct head position to see anything while zoomed in.”
Another weird thing is that when I try to reach the air conditioning pannel (which is partially hidden by the stick armrest), instead of turning my head to the right and leaning towards the screen, I have to make some weird moves (basically I manage to reach the knob from below the armrest and not from its front).

I tried to set the FOV to larger values (80°) but that didn’t change anything. I also tried other trackIR profiles but this doesnt help… Is there another setting that I am missing?

It was a light problem. Because of a window the image was too bright on one side and faceapi couldn’t track my face correctly!
