Would it be nuts to buy a cougar on ebay?
-
I have the X52 non pro version and its great. I’m just learning to fly the falcon, and always looking for the most realistic thing, I learned that the Cougar is modeled after the real throttle and stick of the F-16.
I know that the Cougar is no longer produced, but there are new ones available for around $300-400. Would it be worth buying the cougar at that price to play falcon bms?
I appreciate any thoughts and opinions. I am a newbie when it comes to a lot of this stuff.

No, it would not be crazy, as a matter of fact, I acquired mine on eBay about 3 years ago, and it works great. The only thing I would recommend is to ask questions to the seller about the product, and to check and analyze as many pictures as you can. Also, make sure you stick to a specific price and no go above it. Good luck!!!

It would not be nuts at all.
Even though the Cougar is no longer available from TM and yes, even new they were prone to having issues, there are still some 3rd party upgrades available for it.
Realsimulator have a TQS converter called TUSBA, this basically changes the TQS to a usb connection they also have a RUSBA which changes older rudder pedals to a usb connection also see:
http://realsimulator.com/html/tusba.html
The Cougar and TQS can also be updated with Hall Sensors see:

Thrustmaster also still have limited spare parts available.
So, no, you would not be nuts IMHO……

I would recommend a force sensor modified Cougar in excellent condition over any other HOTAS. Cougar only misses the dual throttle feature, which is very seldom used anyway. I had a dual throttle HOTAS once upon a time and never used that feature.

wait until the 4th of May.Perhaps something good might come out

Maybe I will wait till the 4th of May. I heard something about that, but I think it was to be the joystick throttle of the F-18. While I don’t have any plans to make a cockpit, I do want to slowly make things more accurate. Get the cougar or new stick that may come out may 4th, Get a flight sim chair and that shaker thing which looks neat. Then finally one of those awesome curved screens. I’m 39 and I should have that all set up by age 65 when I retire from teaching!:p

Just gt the 34" curved 1440 line monitor. Awesome!!!

nothing in their ad points to F18(well…maybe the fact that they are holding the event on a carrier) and im not aware of any serious F18 sims plus they have already manufactured a twin engine throttle. My bet is hotas for the F16!

I would (and have) bought several Cougar items on E-bay and yes - I’d do it again. But the best setup is to find/buy just a Cougar TQS and use a Warthog stick; lone TQSs come up on E-bay from time to time - I think one of mine is even USAF surplus/brand new. I have one full Cougar set and two solo Cougar TQSs - one converted to USB standalone using a Bodner board (which I use on a Mac) and another with a RealSim TUSBA R2. Highly recommend the TUSBA R2, and the Warthog stick is such an improvement over the Cougar that it’s a no-brainer, IMO.
I plan to gut the internals from my Cougar grip to build a Hornet grip once I get a 3D printer…some day.

I also just bought a Cougar on Ebay. The TQS broke while being shipped, but i glued it together and now I await spare parts from Thrustmaster.
It is truly an awesome setup. Having a little trouble with the software though (which, to be honest, is a bit complicated). -

Just a guess, it would be for the upcoming DCS F-18.

yeah? didnt know that.ooh bugger

may4 has come and gone…
nothing for us?

New rudder petals, also new target software, and it looks like you can buy a warthog throttle by itself to go with the stand alone warthog joystick.
