Strela-1/10 (SA-9/13) extreme performance
-
Hi guys,
From the following clip:
(first clip is from the TvT server (4.34.3), second clip is from a regular TE (probably 4.34.2).Strela-1 & 10 seem to have a bit too high performance and tracking capability. I doubt the seeker gimbals limit are this wide.
There is also the fact that the Strela-1 is engaging from a near-front aspect while it’s supposed to be a rear-aspect only system (as per “The Vault” BMS threat guide).
Is this a known issue?
Thank you.

The trajectory may be an issue indeed (that the missile continue tracking after passing by).
Please provide the ACMI so we can (maybe) measure angles.

How are you sure it is an “issue”? What is the definition of front aspect for you? Only front … or mainly front? … what are angle limits ?
About it, explanation has already be given on the forum somewhere (or on C6?). -
this is public forum here

Strela1 and Strela1M can target an plane that comes in at any direction. That means it can lock on and track to a plane that is flying by at any direction.

I asked about Hpasp (creator of the SAMsim), maybe he has some data about Strela-10. But just for reference in the same era the best SR IR AAM missiles had +/- 40 degrees gimbal with 20 deg/sec gimbal rate. -
C6?

Here is the exact source.
+/- 40 degrees gimbal.

That’s not a Strela, that’s a boomerang LOL

Please stop BS guys.
C6 is not a source of info of any kind. I was just saying that Jp (or I , I do not remember) gave a reply about it there. Thats all.

I don’t know where to look for gimbals …
Dev in the know are full busy on something else.Come with this later on.
-
I rather use the original Soviet documents about Strela-10…
OK. I’m just replying to your question.
-
The Strela-1 likely has the same gimbal, the Strela-10M was just a “boosted” Strlea-1 with EO/IR otions and a more up to date electronics + target distance meter for easier aiming.

I do
In the missile .dat file, you have the seeker type (0 for the SA-13, which means IR) and the seeker version (16).
That is a reference to IR sensor data in the DB. When you go there there is a gimbal limit set. IIRC that’s the complete FOV in degrees, so 80° instead of the 40° off-center that you would expect. (The 9X has 180°, for example).
So the ACMI makes it look like a code problem, where the missile tracks outisde of its data gimbals.

And that was indeed a code problem, it was yet another hack from the very old days that affected IR SAMs only.
I need to test more if that hack was warranted by something but it does not look like it so far.

Is this the reason heaters weren’t going ballistic after being spoofed by flares? We seen many times the heater might turn through in excess of 90-120 degrees seemingly trying to re-acquire until they run out of energy.

Yes that too. That should only affect IR SAMs though, not AAMs.

If have the time and opportunity, taking a look at AAM might prove fruitful.
