No Russia?

Where does one acquire the STRM data?
Used to get it from the NOAA site, but they no longer provide it. To my knowledge there is no other site(s) that provide what we need for Falcon???

No, not what we need, and if it were, they only allow a selection of 175x2 KM to select, we need WAY more area than that.

Sorry guys, but this just isn’t the data required for Falcon.

I suppose I should confess Alaska once peaked my interest, and I still have the *.E00 files for the region. Here’s one I made earlier…
Do I want to pursue it? Difficult… as I mentioned earlier, I cannot see much point in creating yet another theater which will no doubt fall like many before it, and especially as it is wholly unsuitable for anything other than training. In my eyes, it is a waste of resource. Of course, if, and that’s a bloody big IF, people were prepared to commit - custom terrain tiles and skinsets are an absolute must - then who knows what would happen…

Trying to be as delicate as I can put it, but I’ve certainly noticed those who don’t finish a theater, typically are the ones who come in later saying it’s impossible, or shouldn’t be done (Nevada being a great example). Malc so far you have spent your time in this thread giving nothing constructive as of yet, then finally you now bring forth you have done some of the work in the past? Is it possible that maybe this is just personal for you, since you have apparently abandoned the project? Would you be willing to share what you have done with others so maybe they could pick up where you left off?
I also believe that things should be created, especially in flight sims for the sake of having it. If you look at the MSFS community there is a huge repository of freeware scenery, models, textures, ect in addition to the payware add-ons that many purchase as well. I do believe that we as a group suffer from negativism and naysay, which is probably a major factor in why so many theaters have “fallen.” Generally people respond to positive input and feedback from others, I believe in anyone who can do this project and that they will see it through. I don’t think it has to have all the bells and whistles to be considered a theater, not everything is combat, why do some have a hard time simply enjoying the most important part: the flying.

bear with me… no Russia landmass?

Please show me where I have said either - not once have I said it is impossible or shouldn’t be done. Don’t put words in my mouth, especially if you then go on to…

… ask me to share what I’ve done to date (which is very little, to be fair). Of course I’ll share it, if it is wanted and will be put to good use.

Are you prepared to offer any and all skills you can to see the task through? I believe people follow leaders - I have two times in the past tried to be one of the leaders (Panama and Kuwait) - only to have far too many promises of help fall by the wayside. Some (Chuckles to name but one) picked up the bat on Panama and carried it forward, but not until long after many promises of help were pissed on. Polak has kept his word and assisted greatly with Kuwait, but again, all the help that was promised never came through. Is it any f***ing wonder I am skeptical?

Show real leadership - a genuine desire to see this through to the end, and I’ll gladly help in any way I can. Simply post your desire to see someone else contribute (as in your opening post on this thread) countless hours of hard work to satisfy your whim, you can forget it.
I don’t think you truly appreciate just how much work goes into creating a full working theater, even if you forsake the campaign element of it.

so …
- the only guy who came up here with a draft of something
- the first guy who actually provide content versus brassing air
- the first guy who is willing to offer his previous work
is accused of being a nay sayer?
Cut the crap gents !!!
He’s got experience you do not have.but I’ve certainly noticed those who don’t finish a theater, typically are the ones who come in later saying it’s impossible, or shouldn’t be done (Nevada being a great example).
you’re not part of this community for long enough to state such a thing imho
Would you be willing to share what you have done with others so maybe they could pick up where you left off?
So we’re all talks about doing great things but you aren’t even willing to start from scratch and rather would use what’s been already done? That tells me a lot about how the project will look like in 12 months.
Are you prepared to offer any and all skills you can to see the task through? I believe people follow leaders (…)

agreed (and i know what i talk about too being active with many different terrain for more than 15 years)

I have to ask… what’s the point?
For a theater to be viable (IMO) it needs to be able to support a campaign. For a campaign to work properly, you need plenty objectives to link together to aid good GU movement. For plenty objectives, you need a good road network too. Alaska is the last place on earth you’d go looking for a good road network.
Your very first reply, I’d rather you stay out of the thread if you have nothing constructive to add. Your entire contribution to this thread has been basically this. If you really want to be a part of building this, then don’t nit pick the idea which isn’t even a real thing yet and then allude 4 pages in that you have done previous work. The only person who has shown willingness to even look at the project has been Cloud 9 who is actively sourcing data sets for it as we speak.
Posting a .png after the fact and the declaring from the high heavens it is for not is meaningless. And asking for it isn’t trying to avoid starting from scratch. It doesn’t matter either way, if you’re unwilling and are just posting it to brag then again it’s without meaning other than to stroke your ego. You are more or less proving my point.
@ Red Dog I really don’t care what you have to say, you lost credibility with me on the last go around. Just leave me be. Thanks.
Can we get the thread back on topic, please. Focus on those who see this as something as viable. If you read my posts it is merely an idea; not a request for someone else to work for me “at my whim.” This is starting to look like some are using this as fodder to attack an ideal and I’d appreciate if we could get back on track.

I asked what’s the point - I didn’t say it couldn’t be done or indeed it shouldn’t be done. Facts eh? They can be a right bitch sometimes…
Good luck in your endeavours.

You seem to have low situational awareness, what you say constantly is in contradiction.
Do I want to pursue it? Difficult… as I mentioned earlier, I cannot see much point in creating yet another theater which will no doubt fall like many before it, and especially as it is wholly unsuitable for anything other than training.
If this isn’t naysaying or negative thinking, I don’t know what is. I’d hate to see you start a business, probably wouldn’t get very far at all. Again I reiterate, let us get back on track.

Don’t ever presume to know me. You know absolutely nothing about me.

Please respect the rules, especially the first one, and it seems the seventh
Whether you care or not the fact remains that Red Dog does have some experience and a fair amount of credibility in this community. And he continues to give a lot back to that community.
This is a public forum so expect opinions to differ from yours from time to time. If you can’t deal with that you can always start your own, where you can be Top Dog. Oh, wait…
Back on topic though… Alaska scenery with a DirectX 11 graphics engine and terrain engine… Red Flag - Alaska… now that’s something to dream about for the future for sure.

@Cloud:
Unfortunately with the SRTM data I have, none of those are within it!!
If someone else has the available SRTM data for that area, I’m up for it.
I have already generated the theater for the SRTM data I previously posted though!
Cheers,
C9
Out of curiosity, which airports ARE in the coverage area you have?

Uhhmm, not exactly!?
Out of curiosity, which airports ARE in the coverage area you have?
There’s several, I haven’t wrote them down, but they aren’t the major Air Force Bases.
BUT, stay patient and stay tuned, I will have an update later!!!

Agree in full.
And if I have caught the sense correctly, Darkman, not to dream only about, if for this. With best regards,
