SA 10's are a beeeooottch!!

I keep trying to fly an AI strike guarde by an SA5, SA2, and SA10. Im able to avoid the SA5 and SA2 but the SA 10 keeps shooting me down. Im flying a block 40. I now know from a little research that I prob should be flying NOE to get below the 600ft minimum engagement altitude of the SA 10.
My question is since the block 40 doesn’t have the flir/tfr setup is there a way to change a file or setting to install this equipment on my bird?
-
Im guessing its the lantern pod. How do I ad the lantern pod to the block 42?

40 or 42? 42, TGP. 40, no TFR I think.
Sa 10 will shoot you as soon as there is no ground between you, without a warning. It goes beyond flying low.
Actually it’s an HTS pod you need, and HARMs, and 30,000 ft.

Thanks Lorik! Guess ill have to frag my own mission to dispose of the SA 10’s. The AI is tasked with that mission but they always fail as well. They are supposed to SEAD ahead of me and take care of the SA 10’s while I bomb an underground factory. And yes they shoot me down with no warning as soon as I enter their engagement zone!!

Exactly. It needs a human brain to bug the Grumble and silence it
Edit: or a Prowler or Growler in the air at the same time…

AI can do a Grumble-strike. Try this…. frag it out as a DEAD with a pair of F-16s that can carry HARMs. Once the mission is generated, have a look at the IP. It will probably be set at 25 miles, maybe (much) shorter. Adjust the steerpoints so that the IP is 50 miles or so. AI flights tend to wait until they have hit the IP to fire their missiles.
This is not a guaranteed mission success, but it does work. I usually give the AI element lead a pair of HARMs and the wingman six Mav-Ds. I have also fragged these missions and assigned a second F-16 element as SEAD. The bigger challenge usually is spotting the SA-10 battery on the 2D map to assign it as the target in the first place. Tiger Spirit for example has several SA-10s located near Sinanju. You will know they are there if you fly within range, but they are rarely spotted on the 2D map unless a friendly flight happens to get close to them.
This is something I recommend you do with any type of AI mission that uses standoff ordnance. For example if you frag a TASMO sort of mission with Harpoons. The IP will be set by default as far too close to the target, negating it’s standoff ability and leading to unnecessary losses.

To add a little bit, don’t forget to use the UI briefing’s about the threats you’ll encounter, you sometimes read about threats that don’t appear on the map, that the flight you chose shall run into… Particularly SA10.

You’ll have fun with that, I just recently did the same(fragging a “campaign within a campaign”).
Also, while we’re on the subject, I may have a SA-10 evasion maneuver(or, I just got lucky). I was ambushed by a -10 about 20 miles away, as I was passing on my way to my fragged target. I immediately rolled in on it, only to get 2 more -10 rwr warnings.
I immediately aborted, turned 90 degrees to the site(although the Threat Guide says beaming not too effective), went to a mil power split-s(doing my Slap program all the way) , and pulled out moving away from the sites at about 100 feet.
So, what does The Group think, good or lucky? -

So, what does The Group think, good or lucky?I never get any warning at all from SA 10’s. Im usually just flying and then…BAM!!! Im ejecting, exiting BMS and loading Tacview to find out what got me…always (on this mission) its always an SA 10 ordinance that got me.

That’s because you won’t usually get a warning from the Grumble. If you do, you’re actually lucky, it’s rare.

Maybe it’s just because I’m paranoidingly(doubt that’s a word ) watching the rwr. I’ll get the little boxed “10” and that’s it . At that point I’m defending, although at times I wonder if the AI is sneaky enough to spoof me into an active threat .
That’s what I’m liking this BfB campaign I’m doing. There are SAM’s all over the place, and at least to this point they’ve not run out of missiles. -
Yup. A quick flash of a 10 on the RWR is all I ever see. When (if) I see it, I pull a “Brave Sir Robin” and head for the weeds…
-
From my experience, RWR can warn you when you’re close enough to the SA-10 site but not sure if it’s consistent every time… Also, load up an HTS pod even if you’re not packing HARMs since it will increase your situational awareness, unless you’re 100% sure that you’re not dealing with serious SAMs like SA-6/10/11/15/17… Anyhow, when you’re dealing with an SA-10, the HAD page will provide you with enough info for you to determine whether or not the SA-10 fired on you… Basically, once the 10 turns red (meaning that the radar is tracking you) you can be 99% sure that the SA-10 fired on you… If you see the 10 turning red and you’re not taking evasive action, you’re asking to be shot down

Because that is what they do, they are area deinal under certain capabilites. Even the oldest S-300 variant is far, far beyond the stone age old systems. You can argue the EW modelnig values but the missiel kinematics what it makes really different. You cannot outman. them. While in Falcon their capabilites are undermodeled. They have still one target channel, no anti HARM capability while your ARM are totally all aspect…
In RL flying against any version of SA-10 without ALE-50/55 + EW + rain of HARMs is quite suicidal even it has only 105 launch arc limitation because of RPN (Flap Lid)
-
With SA-10 everywhere I’ve managed to sneak right to the northernmost chinese airbase multiple times and durandal the hell out of it.
I was just flying low and always trying to put some ground between me and SA-10 spikes. Granted last few miles were always intense since it’s quite flat and I could see SA-10 launch on me time and again but I guess they never hit me because missiles couldn’t do the dive.
Basically as soon as I get a SA-10 spike on RWR I always dive as low as possible. That of course brings a ton of other risks into play but at least defeats SA-10.
At night I just use NVGs. -

Compadre, if you’re referring to HAD in the Hornet, me too! When I’m flying the Viper, with HAD, it almost feels like I’m “cheating”.

If you fly with Prowler/Growler in the same package it used to jam the Sams. I do not now if this still works in 3.33

Nurse, this is something I’ve wondered about. I’m unsure to what extent the EW birds are modeled, how effective.
