SA 10's are a beeeooottch!!

From my experience, RWR can warn you when you’re close enough to the SA-10 site but not sure if it’s consistent every time… Also, load up an HTS pod even if you’re not packing HARMs since it will increase your situational awareness, unless you’re 100% sure that you’re not dealing with serious SAMs like SA-6/10/11/15/17… Anyhow, when you’re dealing with an SA-10, the HAD page will provide you with enough info for you to determine whether or not the SA-10 fired on you… Basically, once the 10 turns red (meaning that the radar is tracking you) you can be 99% sure that the SA-10 fired on you… If you see the 10 turning red and you’re not taking evasive action, you’re asking to be shot down

I keep trying to fly an AI strike guarde by an SA5, SA2, and SA10. Im able to avoid the SA5 and SA2 but the SA 10 keeps shooting me down. Im flying a block 40. I now know from a little research that I prob should be flying NOE to get below the 600ft minimum engagement altitude of the SA 10.
My question is since the block 40 doesn’t have the flir/tfr setup is there a way to change a file or setting to install this equipment on my bird?
Because that is what they do, they are area deinal under certain capabilites. Even the oldest S-300 variant is far, far beyond the stone age old systems. You can argue the EW modelnig values but the missiel kinematics what it makes really different. You cannot outman. them. While in Falcon their capabilites are undermodeled. They have still one target channel, no anti HARM capability while your ARM are totally all aspect…
In RL flying against any version of SA-10 without ALE-50/55 + EW + rain of HARMs is quite suicidal even it has only 105 launch arc limitation because of RPN (Flap Lid)

With SA-10 everywhere I’ve managed to sneak right to the northernmost chinese airbase multiple times and durandal the hell out of it.
I was just flying low and always trying to put some ground between me and SA-10 spikes. Granted last few miles were always intense since it’s quite flat and I could see SA-10 launch on me time and again but I guess they never hit me because missiles couldn’t do the dive.
Basically as soon as I get a SA-10 spike on RWR I always dive as low as possible. That of course brings a ton of other risks into play but at least defeats SA-10.
At night I just use NVGs. -

Compadre, if you’re referring to HAD in the Hornet, me too! When I’m flying the Viper, with HAD, it almost feels like I’m “cheating”.
-
Exactly. It needs a human brain to bug the Grumble and silence it
Edit: or a Prowler or Growler in the air at the same time…
If you fly with Prowler/Growler in the same package it used to jam the Sams. I do not now if this still works in 3.33

Nurse, this is something I’ve wondered about. I’m unsure to what extent the EW birds are modeled, how effective.

See there too.

You only need one in the air, not in the same package.

Me too. This past Sunday we flew a strike on Sunch’on airbase. It was a veritable SAM trap. No missions had flown near here up to that point in the campaign so all defenses were full strength. I included a Growler from the carrier to tag along. In the event, not a single SAM was fired at our package. I guessed afterwards that the Growler had made a difference. Of course there are other ways to explain the lack of engagements, but it sure ‘seemed’ to make a difference.

Which is the other side of the coin, DBond. From the "Weaseling"perspective, you don’t want them to “hide”

Yes, true. But I was a striker, so….
Just read the thread LorikEolmin linked. Great stuff, thanks very much for that. That is fantastic info right there.

What’s really interesting to me in this is that manpads don’t appear to be modeled in BMS…they are in FAF, and I’ve been zapped by them there on numerous occasions. All this talk of “getting low” seems to be working without any regard to manpads.
-
SA-7 (Grail) Strela-2 is in BMS anyway. KTO theater.
-
Doesn’t seem to be very well deployed, based on what I’m reading here…
-
I see it in pure infantry battalions. SP guns tend to have SA-13, same with mech. HQ units or anything with a BMP-CMD have SA-14s (plus 13 usually). None of these are manpads of course, but they fill the low level IR SAM role. Artillery battalions like the ones deployed on the HART sites in Rolling Fire also have SA-7 I believe.
-
FAF appears to model both manpads and surface small arms fire on a pretty distributed basis - even in the Training missions, if you take some of them off-script…which can/will sure cure one of feeling “comfortable” flying low level.

I just cant seem to not get blown up by those damn SA 10’s. tried that mission ive been working 3 times today and got shot down every time with no warning. (yes I know that’s normal with the SA 10’s) Its become personal now. I desperately have these need to destroy them. I tried using ef-18g to jam them but they got shot down by some migs so I then got shot down by the SA 10. So now I am going to jump in the cockpit of the EF-18g hornet, strap some 88’s under my wing and deliver them personally !
The question I have is how do I employ the electronic warfare of the EF-18? Do I just turn the jammer on and that’s it or is there other steps?

Wray, I believe the answer is yes, and I have an alternative for you. That is, add a Growler to your package and let the AI “run the jammers”. Based on what we were talking about here yesterday, I tried that last night and I was able to engage as Striker.

Thanks for mentioning that, Stevie. I had the same thought, for AAA too, but wondered if I was imagining it. Maybe the BfB I’m flying now is a different tactical situation, but even in Korea it seemed when I went low in F4AF I would get hosed, and not so much here.
While we’re on the subject, is there a way too tweak that somewhere besides running the campaign on Ace level?
