Optical SA-2 launch?
-
Note this is on BMS 4.32.7.
I’m at day 2, around 1600 into my Rolling Fire campaign (single player). We have halted the North Korean assault at the FLOT, we have knocked out most airbases, except for those north of Pyongyang and north of Wonsan (across the water).
Also all SAM sites have had their radars destroyed and most of them have been reduced to a handful of trucks and broken launchers. While on a sweep mission, I got low to engage a flight of J-5s. I must have been probably at 15,000 feet when all of a sudden I get a launch warning and my plane immediately gets hit and fireballs into the ground. I barely managed to eject in time.
As I was in padlock view on the lead J-5, having killed its wingman with an uncaged AIM-9M shot seconds before, I had no time to look at my RWR before my F-16 was hit and violently started corkscrewing into the hillside. In the debrief it showed that I had been hit by a SA-2. I must have flown over a known SA-2 site that we hit earlier in the day and sure enough, recon shows me that the unit only had 2 SA-2 launchers left and had NO Fan Song radar.
Does BMS model optically guided SA-2 launches? How did it manage to track me given that they didn’t have a targeting radar any longer? While I overflew the SA-2 site, I was also in a high-G turn (having gone CAT-I before) at about 420 knots, slicing down into the group of J-5s, so I wasn’t exactly flying straight and level either?

What if they destroyed radar after you got shot?
In BMS SAM sites are sometimes ressuplied and they can get new radar to become active again.Optical launches, at least IRL and in SAM SIM, require radar.
TOV camera is actually part of radar, its mounted on fan song radar array. And during optical launch radar still needs to transmit signal to missile trough RPK and track missile beacon (it cannot be tracked optically on SA-2). Even during optical launch you should get RWR warning because of RPK transmitting. IRL HARMs could also home on RPK signals. In BMS i don’t remember any launches when radar was down.
And in BMS aswel as IRL recon is not perfect. In Israeli theater its common that various units pops up without being shown on recon screen. In Israeli theater i have detected multiple Hawk sites that never been seen on recon screen. -
No optical for SA2.

What does RPK stand for? I couldn’t find this acronym description anywhere.

Try “RPK radar” on Google?

I’ve had optical SA-10 launches. After destroying the radar, would be messing around low level (below 5000 feet) above the launchers and woosh i see one firing after a while and then I’m going down in flames. That’s in TEs I’d make to test/train on a certain weapon, tactic…
Cheers!

Its Soviet acronym.
It is in fact missile command transmitter. It transmits guidance commands to missile, it can also arm RPF (radio proximity fuze), command detonate the missile or command missile flyup in case of missed target.Western RWR systems starts to scream ML when they detects RPK signal. Soviets were aware of this and they added switch that allowed to transmt RPK signals even without actual launch, this was to scare the enemy and make they think that enemy have launched the missile.
And from what i recall real SA-10 has no optical guidance.

IRL, sure, I don’t know personally. What i do know is that in BMS I’ve seen it happening. And not just once. Empty theatre. One SA-10 battalion. Eliminate the radar, then get close and under 10000. You can see it launch.
Cheers!

Maybe MANPADs or a IR SAM is there too?

or you could have told him. why are forums this way?
Not forums, just me. Everybody knows I’m the ugly guy.
I couldn’t tell him. I didn’t know. I suggested a way to find.

So does BMS model optical SA-2 launches? Regardless if it were accurate to real life?
LorikEolmin , we’ve established that that happens with SA-10s. And also that you are the ugly guy muahaha. I’m moving geographically soon and hope I will have a good enough internet to finally challenge you people. and I’m. just. freaking. itching for it!!
Cheers!!!

In my case, it was exactly like that. No radar, I got close and low while engaging the J-5s…… and the SA-2 launched and struck my plane. Right before my plane got hit, my RWR started chirping … (chirp chirp BANG!) so something radar guided was locking onto me. The debrief stated it was a SA-2 so definitely not a SA-7 or so.
On my next flight up, I overflew the SA-2 site at high altitude and had a real close look with both my TGP as well as the enemy ground unit view… and all I could see were SA-2 launchers, some trucks and people but NO radar? I later on hijacked a BARCAP and dropped a full load of cluster munitions on the suckers. Been very quiet ever since in that area.

I don’t know if it’s optical launch or not, only that it’s independent from Flap Lid. I posted a video-post page 1.

It shows that jamming is only effective to a point of burn through, and you did not indicate the state of the installation.
I have over 5000 hours of killing SA2/10s or dying from the bastards and have no recollection of a situation where launchers fire after there support radar is destroyed.
Except for Falcon Online maps where they regularly place multiple groups on top of one another.
