Thoughts on a back seater.
-
Would be more like asking AWAKS for location of target threats ,but updating every 30 seconds within visual range, if the game engine could handle it.
-
I bet you’d soon turn it off…
My thouhts on a back-seater - real pilot in some other part of the world connected via TCP seeing everything I see. Please.

“Engaging Mig-21, seven o’clock, low”
Replace with “Engaging” with “Tally”, ad nauseam

Really , why do you think they built 2 seated fighters in the first place, I haven’t yet seen a single seat Phantom or Tomcat. SSssoooo how many times do you hit the AWAKS button ???

Because back in those days, they didn’t have fancy computers to assist the pilots, so you had one pilot focusing on keeping the aircraft stable and away from Terra Firma, while the backseater was working with the RADAR and weapons.
If a backseater was implemented, I’d also prefer it to be a human player who can see what I see, for training purposes as in real F-16’s (Israel not included).

Well, I have another trick up my sleeve, I did this in Strike Fighters, I arranged the games Selected Red Target Box to be as small as a dot and changed the color to blue didn’t know the code for Black, so visibility of enemy aircraft was better , I had a brain fart before writing this, can you edit labels down to where they are just a dot ???
-
I’ve played Allied Force with a “back seater” before - I had the stick and front seat duties, and the “WSO” had a keyboard and handled target sorting, AWACS calls, SA, etc. Helped that both of us knew something about crew coordination, and as play goes it was an absolute blast. I could see it being real fun for multi-player. But the two of you need to be in front of the same screen to make it work.
If you’re building a cockpit I can think of all sorts of ways to make a two seat cockpit work with BMS/FAF…and it would be serious fun that way, IMO.
-
thanks Stevie, Free Falcon 6 had a back seat in the F-4 I toyed with it a little, the fun I had in multi player was in IL-2 as a gunner, a pit would be way beyond my abilities, I was looking for something simple as in voice ques to where a bandit would be and better visibility I think Janes Attack Squadron got it right with little silvery dots representing the sun reflecting off of planes in the distance , all this could be scaled up or down for the sake of realism,
-
Even for training new players, co-op cockpits would be a really cool feature, probably a massive undertaking.
I played a lot of apache assault with my friend and we really became quite deadly and had really good coordination. It’s harder but when you get it together it’s quite fulfilling.

Read me reply again - an AI shouting for help from AWACS would soon get very tiring and I’d prefer not to use it. A real life pilot on the other hand… yes please.
No, you haven’t seen a single seat Phantom or Tomcat cos they never built them single seat! Pretty bloody obvious, that one! Even if I was flying a -B or -D model F-16 (in my F-16 sim) I wouldn’t use it.
How many times? Certainly not every 30 seconds, that’s for sure!!

Self loading baggage…

In my f-16 sim, you should broaden your horizons, I love the F-4 in your f-16 sim along with the other craft, carrier ops are fun, anybody can land on a 2 mile long runway

‘Hard left for displacement’
‘twenty to go’
‘straighten up’
hmm… Id love to be able to train for RCP landings from the back seat!
-
AI, heck no.
However, using a real person is the backseat who is able to take the controls is so good for immersion. You can literally train a pilot on squadon SOP’s on that alone.

IL2 BoX, IL2 CoD, FSX when not flying my beloved Falcon is broad enough for me, thanks.
Just accept the fact I don’t share your opinion an auto “call AWACS” feature is not in my opinion a good thing, and you’ll be fine. This is, after all, what your opening post was about, yes?

About the awacs call and broadening horizon
I was lucky enough to participate in a real life exercise in Holland, with hard core simmers taken as a 4 ship fighting together in a real KLU F-16 simulation room. With 3 other simmers. Seeing how’d cope
Within the crew in there, there was an Awacs guy who guided us like in real life, He made constant awacs call
At the end of the day, I wanted to shoot that awacs down, He was constantly talking giving Bullseye posit or BRAA call.So yes I’d think you would indeed soon turn it off and it’s not a question if the game engine can handle it, but rather if you can handle it enough to be still able to correctly communicate as a team through that
As for a human back or front seather: Anyday, I’m game? That would be a great feature. I also flew Strike eagle 3 and made whole missions from the bacseat managing these 4 MPDs. Great sim that was.

Well i have many flights with real radar guy. His constant comms where more than valuable.
Once the leader had them he informed and the radar guy was silent until route or formation change. In many cases where members where unaware of distance or mar he was shouting to the members constantly (if no other critical comm was needed) to bug out or hard 180 or whatever needed and saved many virtual lifes.
Radio silence on members was critical and flaw was superb on very complicated and demanding COMAO.
He was also a comms and sa majician when he acted as package leader and even when he was engaging AA targets.Observing real flights and engagements comms radio calls from radar guys are constant and they ease up when in DF where the flight lead has the most of the comms as long as he is in visual.
Still they inform if there r other hostile flights in the area that might affect them or change their route or formation.
Very valuable info and sure needs a state of mind and calmness for the pilot to procces and evaluate all. When the going gets tough they (radar guys) skip formal comms and speak in direct calls suggesting actions for effective outcome and to gain strategic advantage over the hostile. Sure the pilot curses ALOT like yeap wise guy directing pixels on a screen come here and pull some gs with me… with the known pilot grounch of tightening muscles to make it through the gs and maintain visual with all the hostiles in the df dance.Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-T818A using Tapatalk

Null modem memories!

There’s another one great memory
Simware FCX lan event (probably around 1997 something), 12 pilots in two team of 6 flying Flanker 1.5
We had a Mirage 2000 RIO with us (if I recall right) and we were capping an airbase which was under attack from the other LAN party shooting cruise missiles (6 guys, 2 cruise each)
We had 12 vampires inbound and the M2000 RIO which was not flying directed us 6 in sequence on each of the 12 vampire incoming
Not a single one made it through. Then we reversed role but the opposing party did not have a real life Mirage 2000 RIO to direct the intercept: A few of our vampires were intercepted, but the base was destroyed
This was my best EVER (including flying 20 years Falcon 4.0) Lan mission.
And given here just to illustrate the other side of the coin (and the horizon broadening thing
