MASSIVE FPS drop with clouds/overcast after 4.34
-
Hello.
I’m having a serious FPS problem with 4.34 that wasn’t present back with 4.33.
I remember reading in one of the manuals that 4.34 brought a graphical change that should’ve made 3D clouds less performance demanding; yet, I’m having a totally opposite experience. My system is really on the low-end side, but by lowering the HUD/DED resolution through the config file and disabling pretty much every eye-candy toggle-able graphical setting I managed to easily have 50 to 60 FPS at all times during cloudless/scattered weather back in 4.33, and from 28 to 40FPS with overcast and/or TGP on.
Now, to my surprise while trying the ILS-Weather mission, my FPS above the cloud layer was between 10 to 14 when looking straight at default FOV, rising to ~24 while heads down and between 50 to 60 when looking up without any clouds in the field of view. It wasn’t impossible to fly the heads-down IFR portion of the approach (just a bit annoying), but it became quite a problem after transitioning to the visual part during short final as my FPS would not go over 20 (even on the ground!) - as opposed to 4.33 where I easily had 30FPS when transitioning to visual on final and the simulator was quite fluid when rolling on the ground.
I’m not sure what exactly has been changed with 4.34 - as graphically I can’t see any changes, my clouds are as ugly as they have always been xD - but it sure became 2 to 3x more demading on my hardware!
As a note, the FPS also decreases quite a lot when looking at clouds while zoomed in (the more zoom/lower FOV, the lower the FPS). This was present on 4.33 but wasn’t as bad. When flying through a cloud now I pretty much have to zoom all the way out or my FPS will just drop down.
Is there a way to lower the cloud resolution/particles even more? The one option you can toggle in the launcher’s config doesn’t seem to do much (if anything). Also, is there a way to change the cloud model back to 4.33? I have both 4.33 and 4.34 installed, but I have no idea which file(s) is(are) related to the clouds, and while it might not work/break my game, I’m desperatly willing to try; being able to revert this cloud graphical change or reduce cloud draw distance would surely fix this problem!
Thanks!

Go over the weather tab and set the cumulus coverage to 2/8 i.e all the way to the left. For me, it worked out and my fps went back to what it was.

Thanks, but it doesn’t quite fix the problem. I can’t change the weather for a pre-made teather (such as a training TE), and I still won’t be able to fly online in a bad weather/ IFR.

But still no solutions yetThanks. I also tried lowering objects density but nothing happens (I don’t even believe it controls cloud draw distance).
Also, I just tested the AGM-64 Training scenario, this is just ridiculous! I’m getting 14 FPS at MAX by the time the mission starts, almost 2x less FPS than I had before on this same scenario with both the TGP and the Maverick WPN page turned on at the same time back in 4.33! Not to say that weather options are apparently not changeable for training scenarios, as Mav had suggested on the linked thread.
I have no idea of what has been changed, all I know is that the "Please note the 4.33 FPS impact of clouds has been reduced in 4.34. " quote is absolutely untrue in my case. If this is not reversible I don’t think I’ll be able to fly again in Falcon for some time.

Hw specs?
If we r talking about desktop pc, just overclock it. I do it for decades and saved lots of money.
Get better hw. U can get super deals on used stuff. I’m like that for many years. I dont have money to buy new hw. Even a bit faster ram will help.
Disable eyecandy.
Clean up your system. Kill processes and services that are not needed for falcon world.
One of the above or all at the same time fits u.Lastly dropped fps aint the end of the world i had it for years. 20-25 fps when things got hot. As long as it’s not a stopframe PowerPoint presentation is just super fine.
If its fluid then let it be.Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-T818A using Tapatalk

You haven’t posted your hardware, software/OS or shown what setting you use.
We can’t help, even though some might like to try.
PS: NEVER lower your “Object Density”

Concur.
This option should be removed from SETUP IMO. Could be replaced by something more relevant acting on some Objectives/Feature deagg distance (Cities, village, …)

if you can wait 3 to 4 weeks, that should be fine

I have experienced the same thing but only with balkans theater.

Night Tile Luminosity. Please :pray2:
It would also help with GPU power consumption, save money, burn less coal, produce less green house gasses & ultimately save the world so it can spend more time flying BMS.
:attention:
PS: OR Air Brake “beep” repetition rate
PPS: OR Canopy Reflections Opacity. :tjacked:

I experienced pretty much the same FPS drop as the original poster under the same circumstances - I have what was once a pretty good spec gaming PC - but is now old and creaky, like its owner.
So it’s a real enough issue, for two of us at least.
I’ve taken it as a sign I should finally upgrade, but one of the nice things about BMS ( and there are a lot of them ) is that you don’t need the latest hardware to get into flying a properly realistic simulation. It would be nice if that continued to be the case.

Can you please post some specs in your reply? Because we have no idea what “old and creaky” means to you?

So that all that’s going to be said then is something is the lines of: “your hardware is too weak, buy a better PC, not our problem”?
I believe that stating the fact that back in 4.33 the sim was relatively fluid (over 24 FPS) even with TGP and Mav Screen ON during an overcast, but then having it to become unplayable at 14FPS with only Overcast without TGP or any other PiP display turned on - added to the fact that many people with better PCs are reporting serious FPS losses - are enough clues that there IS a problem with the graphical settings weather related that have been changed with the update - regardless of the specs.

Here’s my old and cranky and she don’t like the clouds… ps, switched to 2/8 and it’s flyable

You’re raising an issue with performance and expect people to help determine the most likely cause and possible solution to the problem (or pinpoint perhaps a bug in the 4.34 code that could be causing issues on specific hardware) but you refuse to provide any details on the system you’re using?
I’m using an outdated system (see specs below, I don’t see the point in making those a state secret) and 4.34 runs fine on my old hardware (CPU dates from 2012 and GPU isn’t much younger actually). Without providing any base line in terms of specs, none will be able to help you pinpoint the cause and any possible remediation? (E.g. settings to change or possibly a small hardware upgrade if that is really what is required)

I had a Phenom II X3 720BE OCed from 2.8 to 3.6Ghz, and after a x4 940BE 3.0 @ 3.8Ghz. My 10yr old Grandson is still fraging on it with a HD 270 up until recently.
Old but not Dead. Is yours a BE. or 1055T maybe ?
HD-6570 is a tripping point in todays BMS also. The older HD-5850 had more grunt. A HD-7950/R9-280 would work.
Another bottle neck is your Ram at 6Ghz is only working as single channel. Two 4gig sticks will auto to dual channel.
