Heaters, flares and AI
-
Halo all,
I have a noob question about the AI. I tested new heaters and AI in dogfight module. I set an Mig23 on ace as adversary, rear aspect missiles only and let it run. Case 1 - I active pause sim, set avtr on, switch to dogfight mode and disable radar. Mig is perfectly in front of me flying steady, should no be avare of me - I’m on his 6 little below. I uncage my heater, get the tone and fire. Mig imediatelly start to pump flares and breaks, missile miss.
Case 2 - same condition, now I fly intentionaly in front of Mig, he locks me with radar and send a heater up my pipe, bud I do not get any warning, that missile is on its way (I assume that heaters do not trigger RWR launch warning). So how can AI knows, that I fired a heater on him? -

We should improve flare dropping based on capability to visually tally the incoming missile
In my to do list

Missile visual detection is impossible.
Missile trail detection is possible.
RWR “Launch” alert is not the be trusted (IRL => doesn’t mean a missile is necessarily actually launched).
RWR missile detection is (IRL) assumption which way be false. -
I recall reading an account by an A-10 pilot regarding turning off their missile warning system for so many nuisance alerts.

is he still alive?

Assuming a pilot can see an attackers aircraft over his shoulder, is there a chance he might also see a missile coming off the rail ?
It’s very obvious to the firing pilot, apparently it’s a pretty dramatic event from everything I’ve read. But then it’s all happening a few feet sideways of him and he’s got a great view of the missiles fiery end.
It must be a very small group of people who have had an air to air missile launched at them from 6 o’clock heat range and survived to talk about it, but I’ll keep watching pilot interviews and reading books to see if I can find out.
It’ll be a real chore to do that obviously, but I’m public spirited and everything -

Well, there were quite a few in Vietnam at least, if you consider targets no flying in a straight line, but I’d bet most of their pilots didn’t speak English.

Thanks for the clarification Mav. Is the implementation complicated? - from AI behavior I assume thst AI LOS is implemented in BMS
