Tom's Cat

Pulled the pre 1996 skins into the PSDs today, almost finished with that. Also put the final touches on a skin I never really finished - a retro design the Tomcatters had on the 101 bird during their last cruise reminiscing the original flying pencil…

I’m surprised you haven’t heard of them before. They have a very large community of players and a very large data base of mods to the various SF series of simulations over at http://combatace.com
They are very playable and offer something for just about everyone. Certainly not as complex as FF or F4 BMS but a good sim and the user mods are sound. -
“Anytime Baby!” Damn, sure was a sexy beast.
Too bad the 'cat never had the combat record the Eagle did. Anyone ever hear of Dale “Snort” Snodgrass? He’s the guy they took the now famous picture of doing an insanely close portside knife-edge flyby past a carrier (forget which one). He was a ledgend in the Tomcat community, he used to do flybys alongside the carrier, lower his hook and drag it in the water past the boat! Those were the days fellas.

In the end, the D-model was probably what the “Cat” should have always been. New engines, glass cockpit, Link-16, new radar and targeting pod+JDAM. It just cost too much to keep the girl flying.
-
BAH, our Gov’t wastes so much money on crap, like $16 muffins, they should have just left them in service because they’re SEXY.:D

So was the F-106

Ah, our cat was designed for the war that never came (fortunately), they don’t make them like that anymore
-
that’s it, i’m starting to hate the 'cat lovers… jeeezz!

The F/A-18 guys are much worse. Then there are the F-111 dudes. I work with one and he swears the old bird can fly circles around the F-15E. I guess it comes down to the fact that all of us are really passionate about our aircraft. You don’t just pilot or maintain it then go home, the plane just becomes part of your life. When it’s put out to pasture, you miss it like you’ve lost an old friend. Heck, after eleven years of being married to me my wife still can’t understand why I have such a massive CF-18 picture/video collection in the home computer.

i know this has been asked before somewhre but i have a member in the 27th that is friggin tomcat NUTS, is there any way to put the standard viper pit in the cat model to make his silly arse happy?
I would think that if you select a Tom Kitty in the sim it should default to a stock F-16 cockpit.
However, if you’re interested in changing the cockpit, navigate to your art/ckptart folder. Create a folder called “F-14A” or whatever model F-14 you want. Select whatever jet’s cockpit you want and copy the 3dcockpit and 3dbuttons files (or whatever they’re called) and paste them into your newly created F-14 folder.
If your sim crashes for some reason, delete the F-14 folder.
I did this successfully last night, putting the F-15 cockpit into an F-5N-AGRS folder.
p.s. hot looking skins, man!

Spot on mate! I always find it hard to relate or share this with most of my friends, not to mention a lady friend…. fortunately the web is a big place, and a person that shares a love for an AC (even if that being the F/A-18;)) is much more likely to understand those feelings then the average dude out there…

He meant the Vark has to fly a great circle route around the earth to circle the Beagle!
