Hud-projection mod

Furthermore, the double imprints (below section) are not the right case. Also, the ‘cut off’ (controlled by the 3993.dds) is not good at all in this version. Currently, I’m mixing the best of both worlds, to get to a stable release version now.
However, to go short: the next version will be an improved version of the one you stated ‘as perfect’ here

FanOfBMS, I was riding in the jumpseat a couple of days ago on a reposition flight. The Captain allowed me to take a couple of quick photos of the HUD at his eyelevel and point of view during cruise flight. Though these photos are from a civilian airliner, the projection technology is the same as that found in the F-16 & F/A-18 era of aircraft.

Thanks for the input.

You willing to share those? i assume you are not referring to the posted pics, because these can be found on the net for some time now…

And, what’s your advise on this project/status?

Mark, I’d be happy as a mudhen if you made 2 versions, one for standard brown textured Block 3x-5xHUDs and one for -e.g. Aegean (EMF)…PL_Harpoon already got the Block 4xs covered, so that would be the HUD paradise, covering all the known modern F-16 versions.
In any case Kudos, I assume you reach the 200 hours worklevel for this mod?!

He Thorsten,
hahaha! LOL yes, the ‘200’-mark is already (far) passed. But, it’s called fun/hobby right?
As you know, now also for the public :-), yes, I’m going to make also a brown textured Block 3x-5xHUDs and (a bit later I guess) the Aegean EMF version.
Currently it’s version 137 (!) which is being tested and now reaching a more-or-less steady state.
A few things I do need to fine-tune, before this version will be released.
After release, I’ll be concerned by the coding possibilities of HUD-symbology.
Regards and thanks - again ! - for your support mate,
Mark -
You are welcome, looks like you have much more patience than I ever had modding!
I had my own nightmare when trying to mod a sky once ago, but 137 version-WOW!:DUnfortunately, numbers rise fast once testing of alternative versions starts.
Keep it up!
Cheers,
Thorsten

FanUnfortunately, my other pictures didn’t really come out. They were to fuzzy and the wrong angle. That being said, when I slide the seat all the way back, I do see see the green colourized tint in the HUD, but its is much fainter than your mod. The closer I get, the green ring (called overprojection) disappears.
So for your mod, I would lighten up the ovrprojection until was just barely visible from from 100% FOV. At 60 % FOV, the viewing angle you show above, you should remove the green circle tint and just make the HUD symbology visible. Another thing that the photos don’t show is that the HUD has a slight curve. The projector (called Overhead Unit) has a similar curve on its glass screen. This is what gives the HUD a feeling its info is floating in the sky. That is also why when you shift your viewing from straight on, the symbols disappears from screen as you can see from my pictures. Also, too much green tint, like you photo above, on real a/c is caused by the HUD being turned up too bright. The print/numbers gets fuzzy at that point as well.
When I have time and am during a 1200 HUD/LLM CAT III check, I’ll take some additional photos for you before different distances from the HUD. They’ll be from a static aircraft parked at the gate, but you’ll getter a better idea of what the HUD looks like in real life.

FanOfBMS432, hey I got you some photos of aplane I was doing a HUD check on. Unfortunately, the HUD against a white building makes the lettering pretty much illegible without the use of a sunshade. But here’s a couple photos from close up and with the seat all the way back. There is no pitch ladder because the IRU is turned off at the moment. The Autopilot is going through a check, that’s why you see the AP mode selections being posted.
As you can see the photo above is been taken with me at the normal viewing angle. below is with the seat all the way back.

@Chuckles,
Top mate!! Thanks for the effort. Certainly welcome input.

… just to let you know: work is being done atm: posted pics are being tested by several top notch mates!
Couldn’t resist posting these

Jo Mark, some new found invaluable vids reg. canopy reflection and colour etc…keep in mind both are F-16MLUs, one RNLAF, one Belgian Air Force…great vids BTW.
Those birds use the brownish HUD, of course. But check the canopy before and after closing and the reflections…;)
One small remark to my comments…please also recheck the Greek Air Force vids and pics I posted in this thread, I am not yet sure how strong the overlay shall appear. I think you are actually quite close. Maybe indeed a tad stronger than in your last version, also in accordance with what I wrote reg. color etc.
Your choice of course!
Cheerio!

PS: Like I wrote, I like your new upper HUD, looks also decent when changin’ flight / sun path, means: The attitude towards the sun.
Cheers

Great job FanofBMS, your HUD looks very realistic.

Looking good! where are links to the latest files?

where are links to the latest files?
In the first post of this thread.
Good to know: I’m currently awaiting respons of one of the guys I asked to test the latest version. When received, I’ll take that into account making - for now - final tweaks and put it up for download. This will be on short notice. If so, I’ll do as usual: post some screenies here and update the links in the first post and let you know.
Improvements will be:
- more realistic colorscheme
- better integration of the Hud-projector’s greenisch reflections in the HUD-glass
- sharp cut-off of the HUD-symbology outside the projector-circle
- added imprints (reflections) in Canopy and HUD-glass

Well specially at the end of the video where he opens the canopy the coloring (darker) of the HUD is obvious.
Also another q have u noticed at the start of the vid and at the very end the smoke coming from infront? it’s from airconditioning? and when he opens the canopy seems like the canopy has some stain (vapor) from the smoke - vapor coming from the front? -
-
Noticed that as well…IMHO these videos are totally amazing. What a kickass location and I assume the Netherlands and Belgium teams had previously planned to release these similar videos, almost identically in length and course of action. 2 displays at 2 different angles. Loved that.

Interesting landing in that 2nd vid. No lineing up 10 miles out. Just swerve into line at last moment and hit the deck cool as you please.
He seemed to increase throttle prior to killing the engine. Havn’t seen such proceedure mentioned in forums ?
Startup would have been more interesting but for time skip. Though not seeing inside cockpit it was possible to relate to movements. Display was a bit tedious from that view frankly

AFAIK … to avoid lube oil leak or for nozzle position … do not remember exactly.
