Hornet FM

Mav-jp i get your point about how things turned out with F/A18 effort. Still i believe that DCS will never have the realistic combat environment that BMS has to offer with campaign and so many a/c SAMS and everything else that keeps Falcon on the “top edge” of combat realism!
Maybe a stall is temporary (like in a real flight) until you recover again!
Please Dont give up… We love the Hornet!! It could have a bright future in BMS ! -
you and the hornet dev team made happy a lot of people, i think the most interesting thing is the FM because it doesn’t make sense fly a plane with a beautiful cockpit but a poor FM code, anyway i think the hornet has a good future in BMS, some people left the project but new ones will come to finish it up, for now WE are happy flying with viper avionics, i mean, there are people like me that can’t pay for a DCS hornet or another one sim, the hard work behind this sim is amazing, i hope the hornet will become a plane with a fully avionics implemented, not soon of course, it will take some time, just to say thanks to the dev team, as i said before, you guys made happy a lot of people, that’s important
I’ll second that. I’ve just finished a Balkan campaign flown exclusively with the F-18 off the TR. Total joy! I love the boat. I love the ATC. I love the plane.

The Hornet is a beast

Glad to see i made at least one guy happy , because this whole F18 story is a sad one and believe me i have a very bitter taste in my mouth still
The whole carrier code with it’s dedicated specific ATC , real human voices, deck moving , arrestors , jet blast etc etc the F18 AMF and FLCS and specifics stuff have been developed when people inside BMS team were pushing hard to get a F18 , including possibly better cockpit and avionics.
Unfortunatly, that flame disappeared when DCS F18 went out, since most of those people left.
So basically, the F18 we have right now is unfinished and has been abandoned , however, i decided to complete the carrier code and maintain it, with the secret hope someone would make a SU33 cockpit and dedicated russian avionics some day
This is ****in sad story
I wonder if I-Hawk’s idea of making separate subclasses of avionics and possibly make them ‘open’ via some kind of API would bring more attention to Hornet. For sure there will be guys who would decide to invest their time and efforts to make Hornet better and better.

I wouldn’t be too pessimistic about this. Looking into the forum you always see some F-18 and carrier dedicated questions. Sure, those Hornet nerds may have left, making it a bit more quiet in this direction. But I think very much people like to hop into another aircraft beside the F-16 from time to time. I don’t agree with Stevie if it’s not 100% correct it’s not worth touching it. Because of nostalgic feeling about the Hornet addon for F3.0 I fly campaigns from time to time in Hornets, Warthogs or Tornados before I return to the Viper. It’s one of the fun sides of the sim. And the Hornet and carriers are without a doubt the most sophisticated from this point of view.

Always the same story. on Dev side 1 or 2, here, 10 or 20 (or even 100 - 200 on few thousands) … Lot and heavy efforts for a minority.
@Jp: Forget the Hornet for now. Lets finish the F-16, then … maybe press on the F-18, or the Su-27.

then … maybe press on the F-18, or the Su-27.
… or the F-35 :yield::bolt: (I know, no documentation because classified)
EDIT: I think it is already a huge task to keep this sim up to date from a technical point of view and to alter avionics slowly into the real thing as information become available.
-
…(I know, no documentation because classified)
No, not a issue of Docs this time. It is rather something else which more tied to the basic interest. We have a very good “high poly” 3D model finished at 95-97% for more than three years, and nobody care about finishing it. This got to be a sign.

First of all thanks for all of you are given to us, I am agree with your last statement, first lets finish the Viper, but honestly, I am sure that most of the people are not requesting the Hornet updates or simply talking about it more, because they do not want to demand you more and more (at least in my case and I know few others in the same line), it just because of politeness we cannot feel in the position to request you more and more, whatever you are giving to us is more than welcome.
But I can tell you that to get an alive Hornet development and evolution is more than appreciate by this community, accurate FM and avionics…that’s a dream.
But please consider it as a wish, not a nonconformist bechaviour or not given value to the present work all of you are doing, we all are very happy with current BMS evolution, we have the feeling that it is still alive, and we love it. It is by far the best one. And maybe one day with its brother the Hornet.
Keep pushing.

Maybe one day people will get tired with waiting for ED finish their Hornet and try to bring it to the best combat flight sim environment, namely BMS x.xx
Anyways, thanks for ongoing effort.
BTW having russian fighters in BMS simulated even at level of Lomac/Flamming Cliffs would eliminate form me last reason to try any of the ED sims.Just basic Mig29 a 9-12 and/or early Su-27 would do. -

It’s maybe a difficult question to answer, but how would someone go about creating the avionics without any access to source code or an API?
I mean, say someone was interested in such a project… what would be step one? Pseudocode examples to get sourcecode access, or something else?

Exactly the reason why I brought I-Hawk’s idea to the table - it is just an amazing concept AND at the same time as potentially big and revolutionary feature as porting to DX9:

Step one: a VERY good functional 3D cockpit with all sources transferred. That is the very 1st step before considering anything else. Then … (?)
-
Just basic Mig29 a 9-12 and/or early Su-27 would do.
But we HAVE a basic MiG-29 cockpit and it’s even CLICKABLE! Just jump into a MiG-29 squadron in campaign. Su-27 has none and uses the F-16 cockpit.

I don’t want to derail the thread but pit is one thing and having radar/hud and other displays with proper modes/symbology is a bit different thing. But let’s end that here and focus on glorious Hornet :). Hell updated gfx/terrain and improved hornet could make at least some of folks move away from DCS to BMS. Because why fly half-baked a/c in empty environment when you can fly more complete one in rich/living world. Even if this aircraft is also not 100% complete.

totally agree

I wouldn’t even claim to want people to move from that sim to this sim. I love THAT sim. And I really love VR in THAT sim. BMS is the quiet corner of the library where I know I can study, learn and grow. That OTHER sim is the cookie jar at midnight. Sometimes growth be damned!—you just gotta have a cookie. In other words, one sim is my quick fix; a romp in the sandbox. The other is a longer term commitment which rewards me with a less ephemeral level of joy. I am too old to keep anticipating hoped-for improvements and “IFF”s. My commitment to the sim requires me to be satisfied with the bug in her current state and to be grateful for what I have.

Ill say just that,
They will figure out everything in the end, we just need to be patient. -

Here you can name DCS no prob. You won’t have penalties.
