Hi fotisafe and welcome.
As you can see one of the most valuable bits of BMS is this community forum - the guys are a great support.
I’m only a few weeks in as a new member, and played falcon 4.0 back in the day.
For what it is worth I am using and sticking to 4.35 U1 (the most recent as of this post) and run Balkans U1 as well. I haven’t yet got as far as MP yet (but can’t wait) and it has taken me four weeks to be able to ramp start a cold F16, bomb a nearby (stationary) target and land without issue whilst keeping to the training guidelines - and a lot of the hours to get that far just reading the manuals - but it is so worth it, that can’t be overstated.
Just wanted to share I hope I have got the attachment right - it was shared with me in my first weeks and is a big help in understanding acronyms whatever doc you are reading without having to page back through to find the original explanation. -
IF it won’t install in Win10 (even in Safe or Admin) then get it from Steam. Just get plain old Falcon 4.0, not Gold or anything else.
IF you are going to install BMS 4.35, then the U1 update, you need Balkans for 4.35.1. Get the version compatible for 4.35 U1 HERE… and I agree with Quasi, this is not a “install and immediately go to war” simulator… its similar to it’s baby brother, but far more advanced.
I still have v4.33 and Falcon 4 that I bought off of Steam. I am having so much trouble. The typical message window telling me I don’t have Falcon installed. I’ve googled until my eyes went blind.
Is there some trick to loading BMS if one has a steam version of F4?
So wanting to get back into Falcon…I had it perfect on my old system, but alas it died. This new system runs Windows 8.1, 24Gb ram, 2 TB drive…GTX-1060 w/6Gb
Please send Help!

the F4 disc does install to win10, Install the minimum, you wont be able to run it but thats fine as BMS is a separate install , install F4 Forget about it install BMS and a world of Falcon as it should be awaits you. remember Dont install BMS to F4 directory, F4 is only used for licence agreement

Should be fine … the Steam option is what I think most people are doing.
Maybe something weird about Windows 8.1? I haven’t heard of any compat problems … I think it still installs and runs on Win 7 SP1 and later.
But neither Steam nor BMS are probably getting any testing on Win 8 by now…

Can you run/play the original Falcon 4.0 ? If yes then it is installed. As Airtex2190 wrote, plenty of players using the steam F4 installation.

No, in fact, Falcon 4.0 that I purchased from Steam will not run. No matter what compatibility mode I select, no matter when I run it on the admin side or end user side of things….it simply doesn’t not start. And my registry shows no mention of Falcon 4 being part of the hard drive contents. What’s one to do?

Hi, Josey, and welcome. Your post got me to thinking, so I did some checking. F4 did not show up in my hardrive, either. It did show up in -
J:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common
I suggest you check your Steam Library for a F4 folder. If it isn’t there, that could be your problem, or maybe a corrupt install from Steam. -
Well guys after 48 hours reading most of -1 manual I am able to start up the jet and start taxiing. Now the problem I have is that I don’t have any idea if my Hotas x-52 pro is set up correctly l.I followed the hotas installation instructions guide in Docs.Is there any guy with extensive knowledge that can help?It seems that the stick twist does not work.I made sure that assigned the correct axis in the flight control!
I am desperate please help[emoji1787][emoji1787]Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I am desperate please help[emoji1787][emoji1787]First, ensure that your X52 Pro is set as the ‘Controller’ in the Setup > Controllers area as shown below (change the circled field to your X-52 Pro). This may be set to ‘Keyboard’ or another controller, like the Razer in this pic. This must be set to your HOTAS in order for the axis assignments to function.
If you’re looking for a good pre-made HOTAS bindings setup, check out my X-52 Pro ‘Falconeer’ profiles – includes options for use with TrackIR or without TrackIR: https://www.benchmarksims.org/…/X52-Pro-Falconeer-HOTAS-Profile
Best wishes and good luck to you!

Thank you so much for reply!I will not use trackIR and yes I selected Hotas x-52 as the assigned controller. What do you use for rudder? Is the twisting stick works for you?I assigned it as a rudder axis and for some strange reason it works like a button. Also in the picture for rudder axis it goes either 100% or 0. Immediately. There is no progressive increase towards the extremes.

That picture is only good for highlighting the box where you select the controller… It was taken when I did not have my HOTAS connected, and possibly in an unconfigured BMS program config. But yes, your rudder axis should not be going from nothing to 100% with no gradient. The pictures in my Falconeer post show some of the HOTAS config settings, and I think you may need to either calibrate your controller or set deadzones. The Windows Game Controller Properties panel will show you exactly what is going on with your inputs, and there you can begin to troubleshoot your issue with the twist rudder.
I use the stick twist for my rudder in BMS, and also therefore Nose Wheel Steering. But all your axes should be reviewed in the BMS Setup > Controllers > Advanced menu to set specific deadzones and saturation of the input curve itself. If you only use the X52 for BMS, you can hard set deadzones in the Windows Game Controller Properties menu, which is something I recommend in my Falconeer setup instructions.
edit: and Icer is right – let’s stop discussing the controller issue here, and use the post you made in Joysticks (etc.). The point is that others might have these issues in future, and be able to read and follow any steps we take to help you get set up and working.

I suggest you check your Steam Library for a F4 folder. If it isn’t there, that could be your problem, or maybe a corrupt install from Steam.I see the Falcon folder in my list of games under the Steam Commons folder…Falcon will not start as mentioned before. And BMS refuses to install- so what’s left? Can’t we simply purchase BMS? Any copyrights that were once in place for Falcon 3/4 are long expired. There’s not one court in the land that would even hear a case, much less render a verdict of infringment.
Ask me how I know these things. Being married to an Ole Miss Law graduate (honors) since 1980 who has served at both state and federal positions within our court systems after serving both as prosecutor and defense appointee .
After googling forever so many fans of the Falcon 4 production…and reading so many of these enthusiasts running into loading issues, its high time the programmers sit down and develope a business plan.
As I step down from the soap box, what steps am I missing that Falcon BMS will not install? Some years back I had success, but that was a different system. I believe I was running Windows 8.1 at the time (and still do, refusing to go to WinX)
My system is the HP Envy 700-216
AMD A10-6700 APU Radeon 8670 HD running at 3.7GHz
28 Gb ram 2Tb Western HD Toshiba 42" monitor
Logitech Wingman Xtreme
Realistic STA-2000 that I’ve had since 1980.Waiting on a Founder’s Edition GPU to arrive Wednesday…500 watt PS in place.
Current setup runs DCS v1.58 flawlessly…v2.56 is the pitts plain and simple.
FreeFalcon6 runs like a scaled dog.Its a shame the money that has been lost that BMS could have reaped from their efforts.

(ignoring all questions about international IP law and business models)
I think I’ve heard others here, or on reddit etc, having problems specifically with Windows 8.1 and the Steam install of Falcon 4.
I can easily imaging neither BMS nor Steam getting much test coverage on a ~10 year old OS that was never very popular even at the time…
Maybe worth starting a new thread with “Windows 8.1” in the title and see if we can find any examples of folks who installed successfully… maybe there are some tips/hacks or workarounds to be learned.
