4.35 U3 Rants, feedback, comments

@airtex2019 thanks Airtex that’s indeed the system setup. I will update it into my signature later. Don’t worry bout my bms settings. Like I said it’s been tune for performance so already had those shadows settings disabled.
My whole point of discussion is actually that I think it’s strange that I expected to be an performance improvement that we went to dx11 but in practise it’s slower then dx9 and older bms versions. My system runs 4.33 really good and 4.34 also when using more scaled down settings. 4.35 is again a big step slower.
It is just that I expected dx11 to be quicker but maybe all other added features on top of it in the end made the final result slower than older bms versions.
@Seifer I will check that performance optimise test later when I have some time to properly test it. -
Thanks for the update BMS team - haven’t really had a chance to fully explore it yet.
For me, overwriting config files is a big no-no, there are ways and means to avoid this, from informing the user (I know you said this was an omission) to putting installers in place to update/merge or even changing the name of the original before installing the new one.
People expected more of this release: totally valid.
This does not exactly explain what I feel, it’s more about the conflicting feedback, is it U3 we’re supposed to be excited about, or is it 4.36 - the various outlets (Discords etc.) contain enticing titbits but never the release it might be in (understandable, but confusing and frustrating).
Finally, most of the changes are MP so meh!
-
@mylonite470 thanks for bringing that setting up. I haven’t had time to upgrade to U3 yet, but given the changelog I would have tried that mission too as one of the first things.
Too bad about the ground objects still being visible thru the soup. But if the runway lights are not visible prematurely through the weather anymore, then that mission has as least become harder/more realistic as it should be. I was always a bit disappointed about how you could call into the tower and they would turn on the lights and you could see them from further away than you should be able to. One other TE I will try is the Case 3 mission which has some of the same weather. And used to have the same issue with carrier lights visible from too far away

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, we will try to improve on this area.

Well, I’ m not asking you to be one way or another. I’m just trying to understand the situation. For example: what would be exciting for you to see in an update?
Finally, most of the changes are MP so meh!
Well, I disagree here, let me try to explain why. Several of the critical fixes are both SP and MP (visor CTD, sound deadlock, campaign exit deadlock, harm CTD etc).
Important fixes were also SP related: zombie aircraft, airframe bugs, airbase repair, UI deadlocks.
Colors changes are both SP and MP. Same as for the alpha fix (several objects burning through fog), weapon camera flickering. The mouse adjustment with TrackIR is also unrelated to MP.
And yes, I know fixes are not the most exciting things, so fire up some ideas! I cannot promise anything, but it is good to at least know what users are expecting.
Thanks a lot for the sincere feedback!

@Seifer well I just did the benchmark TE just sitting in default cockpit view.
FPS are really fluctuating a lot. My avg FPS values are:
FPS: 9,7 -> 12,8
Sim: 14,3 -> 17,3
Ren: 11,9 -> 14,8The .performance none command did not change things a lot. But while having this chat line open en typing text I saw the values go up to 30 -> 40 values !?
What I forgot to mention is that I also suspect the new mfd extraction method to suck up lots of my FPS.
In the past I used the mfd extraction tool that came with bms menu. That thing was so good and fast for extracting mfd. I really wonder why that tool had to leave?Hope this can help you. I am not expecting you to fix my problems but it would be a miracle if you could.
cheers Obi1

I doesn’t have to leave. The RTTClient is in your tools folder and that’s the tools that was started through the launcher in previous versions. It’s just the way you start it that is different

@mav-jp Many Thanks!

@obi1 I don’t really know why (or if) anything about DX11 would be fundamentally slower than DX9. I think for most people, with modern hardware and higher/default graphics settings, BMS did get faster.
I think what you’re seeing is the additional complexity of the theater-world in 4.35 (more buildings, bigger airbases, things like wind turbines, etc) and also higher level of detail, and changes in the way the engine computes lighting and shadows… eg. we lost the 4.34-era “per-vertex lighting” setting which was probably a benefit on your rig.
At the end of the day, the pace of development will surely continue to put increasing load on system reqs… not less. So it seems unavoidable that every major release will drop support for someone. But I actually think the BMS team is doing an admirable job of targeting a trailing ~10 year window of hardware compatibility… not going overboard with super-high detail cockpit textures etc, which are obviously available in the community.
Especially at a time when it’s so hard/expensive to acquire high-end CPU and GPU parts.
-
Sorry to say that, but your system is waaaay too outdated. Dual Core CPUs are trash for anything nowdays, even just browsing internet will strangle that CPU as it will run at 100% all the time. There is no way you can get better performance out of it anymore. Not to mention the slow DDR2s
I threw away all dual core CPU systems at work already as they run really bad even with SSDs. ( and some of them were quite new )
If money is the issue then look for basically anything that isnt 14 years old and at least have DDR3s. You should be able to get way better PC even for like 200-300$.

I flew my first SP u3 mission today in an EMF-L campaign I had saved from U2 and I have to say the new sunset visuals / atmospheric effects look stunning. I couldn’t find anything wrong (except that some of my CM programs seem to have changed, but I’ll have to look into that later; might have been a fluke), it was a completely smooth & fun experience.
Thanks for all your hard work & especially your new “open communications” attitude! It’s much appreciated.
All the best,
Uwe

I am wondering about the weather and clouds, specifically in situations like the ILS_Weather training mission.
I forget when it started, perhaps it was when 4.35 was first released, but there were strange issues with the ground appearing through the clouds. Also some strange flickering.
In the release notes for 4.35 U3, there is a mention of some of this (or at least issues that sound like this) being fixed.
I hadn’t flown the ILS_Weather mission in a long time, but I gave it a shot last night, after installing U3. I think the problem of the runway lights being visible through the low clouds (on final approach) has been fixed. But the other issues, at higher altitudes, still seem to be present. Odd visibility of ridgelines, buildings, windmills being partially visible through the clouds.
I recorded my training mission, here’s a point where some of this is visible:I also noticed that
-
There were several issues related to objects burning through fog/clouds:
- clouds were wrongly sorted ;
- fog was being applied wrong to some object types;
- fog is being applied wrong depending on object altitude (and/or viewer altitude)
We have fixed some of those. The third one specifically is still there. ILS training missions shows the worst of this code, and the goal is to have it working flawless one day. For now, I am happy that it already improved. But I know, far from perfect.
-
@seifer
Do I remember correctly that wasn’t a problem in 4.34? -
I’m still waiting for the regular download.
I don’t keep a torrent program on my 'puter.
I still have a crap graphics card, always have to fly in clear skies, so I probably won’t ever see the cloud issues.
-
@Seifer All updates are always a good progress. The communication you did , is new step and I like .
I think as for each intermediary update released, focused mainly on bugs correction, there is surely less wow effect , I guess!
The update announcement was a bit cold, maybe also because of the new forum: I admit to be little lost with the new forum…probably a question of time, It’s just a question of habit as well. However I can say, what I liked with the old forum : it was the possibility to read the topic content open only moving the cursor on the topic… ( see below)
this is a missing point according to me …
otherwise I am always delighted to see the level reached by BMS Falcon It’s true that I haven’t flown enough with the U3 yet; above all not yet in MP. I know it will be promising…I am also one of those people who would like to see big improvements but I have learned to be patient (3 - 4 weeks). in any case, there is always a “big bone to gnaw” regarding Falcon BMS capabilties : we never get tired of it !

Thanks heaps for the update about this, I appreciate it! I am confident that it will get sorted out at some point, and we’ll enjoy some nice pea-soup ILS approaches all the way down through the clouds.

First of, congrats and thank you to the entire BMS team; the work you do is incredible. As a developer by trade (many moons ago) and at heart I understand the satisfaction you get from completing a release and fixing bugs and deploying new features - I just wish there was a way to thank you even more!
Secondly, this thread was an excellent idea and really shows the maturity that the Dev team has and their true desire to continue to improve BMS. I’m equally impressed so far by the constructive feedback - let’s keep it up.
For me, I always treat every release as a gift - it’s like being a kid again on Christmas morning. So far my limited test flights have all been successful and am glad I can take the sticky note off my monitor that says “raise visor before taking pics!”
Regarding your comments / suggestions about people possibly waiting for the weekend to try it, not adapted to the new forum yet and lost interest, I’ve also noticed a just a general loss of activity, enthusiasm and participation in our VFW as well. I’m not sure if it “just a phase” the world is going through or slow attrition of dedicated fans to other things or what. We keep trying to mix things up and try new ways to engage people but it seems like a losing battle…at least at the moment. We have a core groups that is in it for the long haul and we are all very appreciative of the work you do. It allows us to spend countless hours sharing our hobby with friends from all over the globe. So please hang in there - if there is anything we can do to help promote or improve BMS we would be happy to do so!
Thanks again!

@lorikeolmin
Got some time on the sim tonight and can tell a definite visual difference. I love bms! Keep it alive! -
Just a big thank you to you and all the devs.
U3 except for some minor issues already reported above is better than ever.
And props to you my friend, along with few other devs. We are all human, we all tired and make mistakes sometimes.
Never ever for the last 10 years you didn’t respond to my questions and or suggestions. Sometimes with more patience other time with less but again, you are not robots and get tired sometimes.
@Mav-jp - You made me a promise for 4.XX regarding AFM, don´t forget me please
-
@zeus thanks for the honest feedback Zeus! Let’s see if we can bring the enthusiasm back!
