AAR Wishlist - Bank Speed & Angle

The 4.36 A-A refueling update was unexpected and wonderful.
I respect the development team for putting the spotlight back on aerial refueling and trying to improve it.The current turn speed and turn angle of the tanker seems a bit unkind.
According to some realistic footage, I think this is actually a bit slower
I have edited the acdata to achieve this, and while it works, but the tanker wobbles and flies left and right after turning the track pattern leg and will not fly in a straight line.
It appears that the width of the tanker’s track pattern is affecting this.
Also, I would like you to radio me the direction (left or right) in which you are turning.
Hopefully the development team will fix this, but we need solid references to do so.
Can anyone advise me on this matter? -

My best advise would be : don’t try to hack things without understanding the full picture
In order to change the bank angle during refuel that would require code change

It is not. Please don’t assume and check ATP56B.
Besides, reducing bank will increase turn radius which may cause other major issues in area management (risks of going into hostile aera. -

So what about the bank rate? Also, the radio report of the direction of turn can be found in US-National-SRD-3-1-1.pdf.
-
@Cypher1778 I agree, it would be nice to get a call about which way it is about to turn - maybe not so much for the guy on the boom but for the formation off the wings.
Regarding bank rate, if you set the angle at 30 degrees and you have to maintain 300 kts, I suppose the bank rate should be given from that?
-
@Cypher1778
I think you mean ‘roll rate’, the speed at which you change from level flight to 30* bank. And again, I think you’ll find that the Viper is just fine with the rate at which the tanker rolls. -
Roll rate is perfectly fine and normal.
The direction of turn is not mandatory, especially in ops where minimum comm’s are preferred.
No need to know the turn direction. You are in formation, do not anticipate, simply imitate. In close formation, turns are not announced.
-
Something that would be nice is that the tanker communicates, what direction they are turning and when they are leveling out at the end of the turn.

Why would you “need” this guys?
If you can AAR, it mean you know how to fly close formation. If you fly close confirmation, you don’t need any comm’s. All are simply in you head.
I am not saying that it is not useful for heavy a/c with lot of inertia …But on fighter jet … you don’t need any announcements. No announcement, no HUD … You look at the lead/Tanker, you follow at imitation. Nothing else needed.
Saying you need announcement means you just need a bit more training. That is all. -
@Dee-Jay Oh I don’t need it! I am worried about those in the left and right observation while I am on the boom focused on the lights.
-
Am I missing something here? Tanker will announce entering turn, I just wait and see which wing dips. It enters the turn slow enough that I can anticipate when on the boom; I’ve not had enough practice on formation when it turns though so maybe the problem is there? But still, as @Dee-Jay says, it is simply formation flying with a big plane. Having turn direction announced would be icing on the cake, but not required?
-
For me the problem with AAR is not turns, or whatever. My biggest problem is engine inertia/spool time . As for turns, just don`t look at horizon/HUD.
-
@AviationPlus Humain or AI?
I’ve nerver seen any AI being an issue in this situation.
Human are quite ofter badly disciplined …
They have to stay in their place and must never quite the tanker from sight. -
@Dee-Jay Humans of course. That extra communication would be nice but not needed. Thanks for the reply.

Once you are comfortable enough (you should be as a qualified fighter pilot trained to fly in formation and do fingertip take-off/landing … etc …) you will see that there is no need at all to have any anoucements.
Only anoucement are airbrake in/out, full AB/Idle (never both full idle and airbrake out together otherwise wingman have no margin!)
Landing gear up/down and flaps.
And all can be (IRL) visual sings. No radioHere is my classic footage alowing me to show many things … not a single announcement was made by my lead exept gear up and flap up

Thank you all for your answers.
I just don’t mean to imply that aerial refueling now is difficult for me.
What is important is how reproducible it is as a simulator.
As I mentioned earlier, the turning direction call is mentioned in the real manual.
Also, as you can see in this video, the turning speed is more gradual than in Falcon.
-
@Cypher1778 Are you sure that is even a turn? It seems that it just banks a little, right around when the jet goes into pre-contact. Great video btw, not many AAR videos shot from inside the jet

There is no U turn in this video. IRL we can make some slight heading modification for aera keeping of adjustments or weather avoidance.
If you don’t want to trust me, there is not much more I can tell.
