Good Day, All. I took a little break from the Hornet today to take another look at the F-35C and the F-18E from the viewpoint of our “new” flight modeling mindset.
https://www.mediafire.com/folder/s5lbgpqay831n/8519(F-35C)
From this link you can choose either the Fifth Gen Cockpit or the Hornet pit, and both have the current dat/afm.
https://www.mediafire.com/file/hwaabxncryt78yq/F-18E.dat/file
https://www.mediafire.com/file/18ufxgfl9kouwq5/F-18E_AFM.dat/file
Like the Hornet, the immediate goal was getting the best performance while reinstating the autothrottle, flaps, and TO trim self cancel. The functionality has been restored, the 35C seems to fly well. A main goal with the Rhino has been to correct a tendency to flat spin. It seems to be doing better in that regard.
Finally, we’re hoping to have the visual deck height issues fixed soon -
Good Day, All. Today’s update is about the EF-2000. Mafia Member Scorpion82 has produced a revised flight model file

It goes in 4.36/data/Any Chuckles-Osprey-OFM theater/sim/acdata -
@drtbkj
Joe, I tried the new F-18E flight model for several carrier traps. The landing speed was lower than the “original” FM (about 135 kts on a light-loaded jet vs ~165 kts on the same jet using the “original” FM), which was nice because it provides a little more time when in the groove to make adjustments. However, using the new FM, I could not control the speed properly with throttle when Auto-throttle was on. Speed was all over the place. Here are some screenshots from LSOBot showing the “New” FM vs the “Original” FM:New FM (Case 3 recovery, night landing in fair weather):
Note how the speed is all over the place - Way Too Fast at X and IM, Way Too Slow at the ramp. My throttle (HOTAS Cougar) is right in the low-end detent when at this speed in this FM, so it was almost impossible to maintain speed in the bracket on the way in. This was repeatable (I did 4 traps, 1 waveoff and the behavior was the same).
Compare to this trap (exact same aircraft and scenario, same weather and nighttime) but using the “original” F-18E.dat and F-18E_afm.dat, the “original” FM:
No problem at all maintaining speed right in the bracket all the way through the groove.
So, while the new FM provides lower (and IMO more realistic) carrier approach speeds, I found it very difficult to maintain a steady speed in the bracket.
Would love to see the slower speed approaches but with the speed being better able to be controlled.
Thanks for your work on these flight models.
Regards,
Tomcattwo

Hi, T2. Thanks for the input. I had gotten out of the habit of trapping in AUTO, so I’ll do some testing later today to repro what you’re seeing. I’m glad you like the lower landing speed, that was a goal.
Meanwhile, I have questions…- In your first test, was the dat/afm used what I posted 6 days ago?
- Would you pop over to our Discord and post the dat/afm from your second test run( the “original” dat/afm)?

Sure.

Realy love the project, also would like to download your changes per aircraft basis, like f14, 5th gen cockpit for f22 or so, is it possible that you release your changes as “mods” per aircraft rather than complete campaigns ? So that i can implement stuff in to my campaign that i currently play (KtO)

Hi, Syntax . If you look in my signature you’ll find a link to the Mediafire Mafia Files. In there you’ll find 4.35-36 Data Files. In that you’ll find what you want, organized by jet. One thing though, these will not work in the stock KTO or Balkans. They will work in OFMKTO,OFM-Balkans, or any of the Theaters that have OFM in their names.

Good Day, All,
As we have been discussing, we have been working with the F-18C and how it visually sits on the ground/flight deck.https://www.mediafire.com/folder/g021lul58qoj5/1799(f18c.Install+Pack+ver.12.22.22)
This link will take you to the 18C Files, and in there we have a early Christmas presents for you . The file called F-18C.dat has the “414 engine” mod. If you prefer the “404 engines”, then use “F-18C(2).dat”. You will need to rename that to F18C. Both use the same F-18C_afm.dat.
Install to: X/4.36/ANY THEATER WITH OFM DATABASE/sim/acdata. As usual , we suggest you back up the dat/afm that are there.
Our testing methodology was to get the jet to look right on land ,as the carrier deck height (set in the Editor) has an effect. So, if you have an issue on Deck, let us know and we can help with that. -
Here is a Bonus Update for today…
We hear 4.37 is coming out soon. As you may or may not know, new releases like this are usually standalones, you don’t need to uninstall 36 to get 37. So, the first update is that the OFM will continue to support 4.36 for the conceivable future.
Secondly, we have gotten a some new 4.36 jets, so are considering putting out an OFMKTO ver. 1.6.
We have the F-18E and F-35C sitting properly on deck, but are still working on the Panther flight model. -
@drtbkj rolling the drums…

One more update … We have fixed the F-35’s tendency to spin. The dat/afm are -
https://www.mediafire.com/file/cg657j0r1fl0icw/f35c.dat/file
https://www.mediafire.com/file/mje1z3qasltdoao/f35c_afm.dat/fileBTW, Spin Testing showed us a good procedure. Sometimes when you get a little too , shall we say, enthusiastic, you can find yourself in a nose high attitude and no air speed. The procedure we found was to release the controls and chop power. The nose falls through and you can dive to regain speed.
Also, a dogfighting tip for the Hornet is keep your speed 300-450 in a dogfight, depending on the situation. I found this in another Forum…" If you break [turn] at corner speed pulling max G, at that instant you’ll get your best instantaneous rate and you’ll be very close to your smallest turn radius also, but ONLY at that instant. You’ll immediately start bleeding speed and your turn rate will start to fall off. You now have a choice: keep pulling to maintain minimum turn radius, or ease off the stick to keep your speed up for best sustained rate. " This is also true in the OFM F-18, at least presently in the F-18 Charlie and Echo … Corner velocity is around 420 knots, but you can do some tight turning at 300.
Another tip, and I found this out the hard way, is don’t go crazy worrying about pulling 9g. The RL Hornet/Rhino is modeled for 7.5G below a certain weight, and 5.5 above it. You can get 9 plus if you pull the paddle switch. So, Maverick was right . We have not been able to get a working G-override function on the paddle(possible hard code issue).
Anyway, in our testing we spent a lot of time going for max G , even sacrificing things to get it. But, Brother Ronin said, “pulling the paddle is a crutch for bad procedure” and he’s right.
One final tip is to ,especially in a dive at low altitude, is to keep an eye on your airspeed. Try a 600kt steep dive and watch yourself auger into the ground. You want to keep your speed below 450-ish -
On behalf of the BMSOFM,I wish all our fellow BMS members all around the world a very Happy Holiday. However you celebrate it, I hope it’s GREAT!
-
Returning gladly all the best to you, Fra’, your beloved ones… and all of us, of course!
Merry Christmas and with best regards.

Will BMSOFM files be embedded in BMS4.37 to avoid separate installation?

Hi, Asleepwater. That is tough to answer. The Dev’s have not contacted us. OTOH, I had contacted them back in the 4.35 days, offering to collaborate and offering our Stuff. Perhaps this is a good time to discuss something that I’ve mentioned before…
When I first approached the Devs I was told to send everything through BadBoy. He and I talked about it, and we decided that we would use the Mediafire Mafia Files as a conduit. We decided that as the Mafia was (and still does) post new files as we test things, constant file sharing would be a PITA. I’ve never heard anything to indicate that “conduit” is no longer the case. And we do , from time to time, come across our files in there that say (“by community contribution” or whatever), and that’s fine with us. We don’t do what we do for “glory”.
So, Compadre, the short answer is , we don’t know. My personal hope is that the “new avionics” mentioned elsewhere is the F-18C, and not just because I’m a Hornet Puke. . The OFM has somewhat put the 18C first as we feel that it can please the greatest number of BMS , and not just Mafia, members. Then, we try to use what we learn in other jets.
An improved stock Hornet would be very great news. It would indicate a renewed Dev interest in an Other Jet(s).
As for the OFM, I personally have 2 hopes. One is that 37 does not “bork” what we have accomplished. The second is that we can use whatever the changes are on the OJ’s -
@drtbkj Hi Drtbkj, first of all, I would like to thank you and the BMSOFM development team. Thanks to your efforts, BMS has more and more new experiences. To be precise, besides F16, my favorite BMS is F18. Yes, it has been said that 4.37 will have independent avionics, so does BMSOFM have a separate development plan for F18 avionics and related carrier classes? Also BMS Mafia file shows 1 year ago? BMS Mafia Files link shows old files of 2021 as well, I wonder if they haven’t been updated recently? Finally, I suggest whether to make it into an optional executable file for installation. Good health in 2023.

hey Mafia folks, just to lower your expectations, but also bring some good news.
Don’t expect anything fancy for this next release. F-18 was not touched (well, there is one small diff). And the aircraft that has been modified is far from finished.
What this next releases wants to bring is some new air. It shows the way the dev team is following, opening doors for new avionics and aircraft. But it is not our intention to release several not finished aircraft. We intend to work one by one, as time allows.
Mafia was mentioned several times internally, we keep an eye on your work. I cannot say if anything was included, because I’m not watching data much. But I am pretty sure that any good contribution is at least looked at.
What we will have in this next release is a very small taste of what is coming. Some will be disappointed (its not really flyable in a sense that the pit is still missing dials, switches and optmizations right now, more like a play thing), but others will understand the potential of this work. It has been one of the greatest team work I ever saw internally (aside from the F16, of course). And it is still happening and will happen for the next releases.
For the progress I have seen lately, this bird will fly soon. And more will come after that.
Cannot say more to not spoil the fun, I hope you guys understand this when release happens, but also get excited about this small taste we are giving to you.

@Seifer
Don’t know precisely about all the other chaps, but personally I will tell you: no worries, dear mate, I will take all more than gladly.
About the planes and the cockpits, no worries here as well: I can wait. And I will keep myself busy meanwhile with my favourite birdie, the Tornado - Mafia guys can tell you that. All the best to you and all the devs. too - I just can’t await and will always be glad to give my little contribution, you can be sure of it.
With best regards to all.

Hi, All. I’ve been afk for a couple of days, but as the poet said, I’m baaack.
Asleepwater, I just installed 37 and haven’t even been inside , yet. So, it’s hard to say exactly what we plan to do, beyond the promise that we will continue to do “our stuff” on the Other Jets. You asked specifically about Hornet/Other Jet avionics. In the past we have been limited in that regard due to lack of hard code access. A very exciting part of 37 for me is finding out if you work with the files differently… I took a very brief look at the files on the way here . The acdata files look the same and Maria Files are not in the stock F-18C. The good news our Art files are in so the cockpit hotspots should be good. So, a very preliminary Plan A will be to put our acdataFiles in 37 to see how they work. Seifer says very little was done to the Hornet, which frankly to me at least is good news. We won’t have to start from scratch. Then, an OFMKTO 4.37, then the other Theaters.
Seifer, thanks for the post. I can’t wait to fly 37! We’re also interested in the "new " bird you mention. Please pass alond to the Dev’s that our offer to help is still there.
Jeckal, I know you want to know about the Tornado. The good news there is is if the Hornet FM files works, the Tornado’s should too (cross fingers) -
I did a brief check of the file structure as well, so far I haven’t seen any particular change that caught my attention. I’ll hopefully be able to take a closer look in the next few days. Haven’t launched the sim itself yet.
