FNG: Where to start...

@Icer Yea just not seeing it.
I think I worked around it but who knows, been one hell of a day. After along time got the TrackerIR seems to be fair i think, The mounts for the TWS/Hotis were missing hardware had to cobble that together need to hit the hardware-store tomorrow… how do you miss count 4 short flat heads and 4 long flat heads who cant count to 4 : (
Sorry I am exceedingly whining very frustrated. at the moment.
-
How do i make Mr 3d Pilot disappear he is a pain in my A$$, maybe later right now I want him gone gets in the way finding things and it is hard enough without him in the way.
-
How do I tone done the mouse in the cockpit, it is like a monkey on crack, super sensitive jumps everywhere almost impossible to select anything.
-
How do set it up to have both a mouse to select stuff in the cockpit and tracker to view operationally Was driving me nutz.
-
How do i get it to create the kneeboard procedures for to follow or get it so a different device laptop or something can display them to much to actually print
Made me Glad I was in the Navy…
until tommrow, need some sleep.

Ok what am I doing wrong.
trying to learn the set up sequence… Have a lot of difficulty…
with tracker IR on, viewing out side is decent. inside it is near impossible to be able to select any button, with it off and trying a mouse slightly better but extremely jittery i have charlie house in my hand try to get the mouse to move to the difftent switchs and not go crazy.
I am read the manuals and looking for what I am doin wrong, and You tubin like crazy
but nothing seems to be working fo me at the moment… Maybe a kick in the butt and a point in the right direction lost and cant see the forest for the trees. Thanks Jim

- How do i make Mr 3d Pilot disappear
There’s a checkbox to control the default, but press [alt+C] then [P] in-flight, to toggle him on/off.
- How do I tone done the mouse in the cockpit, it is like a monkey on crack
I agree it’s crazy fast by default. For mouselook there’s a slider on the Setup / Controllers / Advanced page.
But I think (?) the yellow crosshair mouse cursor is controlled by a cfg parameter. Add this to your
Falcon BMS User.cfg
file like the FOV stuff above.set g_fMouseSensitivity 0.25
- How do set it up to have both a mouse to select stuff in the cockpit and tracker to view operationally Was driving me nutz.
I don’t have TrackIR but I think what most people do is press [F9] to pause TrackIR while interacting with switches in the cockpit.
(Note this is a TrackIR hotkey, not a BMS hotkey … you may need to configure or enable it, in the TIR sofware.)
-
@Jim_H can you explain better why it’s near impossible to select any buttons with TrackIR on? There are various different reasons why that might be, is the view moving too much? Mouse cursor is too sensitive? As far as the mouse cursor, I’ve never had an issue with BMS but my windows mouse cursor speed is turned down to pretty low anyway. Try adjusting that to the lowest you feel comfortable using and see if it’s still too sensitive in BMS.
-
@ Airtex thank you, I will look for that.
@SOBO-87 with track IR, in track IR pretty decent not perfect but not terrible from what I can tell so far … In side but BMS external view not to bad, inside the cockpit if i even twitch the bug is flying around like mad, it can jump from the very rear to the throttle in an instant while my chin is on my chest looking down if i remove the reflectors, or turn tracker it off ( so i can use the mouse it is also just hyper sensitive) not quite as bad. Been trying to find in the manuals where to tune them way down just not finding it. just alot of trail and mostly error at the moment
the mouse, I have one hell of a time moving around Bucky badger (pilot) to even see / find a buttion i am searching for… if i can get focused on say ext lights if i twitch I am at aux comms or EPU or Eng start or on top Buckys head so I end up with a death grip on the mouse trying to move it .1 mm and not over shoot so the cursor goes active to select something as i am looking for it (an that is a WIP) I have to like look down and try not to move or wiggle my hand muscles are actually sore
the mouse on the PC outside of BMS is totally normal i even dumb-ed it down there too I am just no having any luck…
the learning i expected, fighting the mouse and tracker
it is messed up as hogans goat at the moment.
thanks for everyone being patient -
@Jim_H remember you can hit [L] to “look-closer” or use mousewheel to zoom focus in/out … to better read the labels and see the switch states better.
I do a couple other things, to reduce frustration… eg. if you want the mouse to respond more smoothly and predictably, you can disable the “sticky” anchoring.
I also disable the scroll-wheel-turns-knobs, because I hate grabbing a random knob by accident when I’m trying to zoom in/out.
// // Mouse stuff set g_fMouseSensitivity 0.25 set g_b3DClickableCursorAnchored 0 set g_bMouseWheelKnobs 0

Today I Learned… thank you to the awesome community here - amazing!
-
@Jim_H ok so you’re using Track IR with reflectors and not an active LED clip?
I would recommend getting an LED Clip, it will make the tracking much better and more predictable. It can usually be clipped to a audio headset if you’re using one.
The official Track Clip Pro, works great, but there are other options like the Delan clip which work just as well.
Also remember track IR is sensitive to IR light interference. So if you have any sunlight in your background that can be causing wild behaviour.
In order to make track IR less sensitive you need to play with the track IR software to make a profile you like. You can add smoothing that will reduce the twitchiness, and bind keybinds to your joystick to freeze the head if you need it. On the Warthog I used to use the little pinky switch on the far left end for this.
I’m still puzzled as to why your mouse speed in the sim is so high. What resolution are you running BMS at?

@SOBO-87 thanks all,
Yes reflectors now and for a little while. Wallet is Winchester at the moment…1920x1080 at the moment, have not set up the 3 monitor surround yet a basic hotas maping trying to keep it simple for the moment till I get more comfortable with it all

have not used the hat reflectors thing in many years but it does sound like you are getting light contamination in the camera. The way to check it is expand the TIR window so you can see the camera grid. If there are (red?) spots showing on the camera display (from memory, can’t look at it) on the screen its glare. This will totally screw up your head movement… No open windows or bright lights behind you… just a guess, as it happens with the Track-Clip that way… Head flies all over the place.

It blew up and i had to reload it today after turning on surround every time going into the 3d it would just crash i uninstalled and reinstalled
and i seemed to be getting this
Next what is that telling me
[00:00:00.000] 8336 Couldn’t open Dragon rules file, loading default rules instead
[00:00:00.000] 8336 Dragon’s rules are in old file formatand it looks like the user config isn’t being read maybe but being a FNG i don’t know alot lastly,
the mouse thing again… I have watched numerous videos from max and others and the mouse can move around the cockpit with a degree of freedom within the FOV from one spot they can hit 1/2 a dozed switches
OK Here I have a cross hair in the dead center of the center screen, it is always dead center and never leaves dead center to select a switch, knob or whatever I have to move the panel with the switch or knob under the cross hair to select the switch or knob 2 switchs next to each other i have to drap the panel from one to the other
but the cross hair is like always the dead center of my screen. can someone tell what i did wrong here? -

Beautiful computer setup! If you don’t mind a bit of constructive criticism, the mirrored array in my opinion is a waste of one of those gen4 NVMe SSD’s and a full TB of very high speed storage. There are many ways to backup and restore files and even the WinOS that make use of a RAID-1 (2-disk) setup on a performance gaming PC a bit unfavorable. Considering the tradeoffs, you could gain a full TB of space, and reduce average total write throughput of these two drives in day-to-day use.
For performance, a RAID-0 setup would be vastly superior and also expose the full size of both disks for use. There is less chance than you’d think for losing the entire array by way of a single disk loss given the non-enterprise applications of a home computer on top of the lack of moving parts which play a factor in HDD RAID setups. I have run a RAID-0 2-disk SSD setup for over 5 years, until my current system where I now leave them both as separate drives (one OS, one for games). The average daily write throughput on the games drive is near nothing compared to the OS drive. That would matter if I planned to use each drive to the end if it’s life, though they’ll likely be “slow old tech” by 2026 and get replaced with faster, cheaper, higher capacity cousins long before their natural death.
One thing worth considering is how you wish to backup your WinOS and/or files, and to not rely on a RAID-1 (2-disk) setup to be recoverable in the event of a single disk failure. I’ve been there, it sucks - and all the “it should work, that’s what it’s for!” screaming doesn’t amount to much when a fresh drive rebuilt just fails. YMMV, just a cautionary tale.
Steer clear of OneDrive, and read up on gaming PC + OneDrive for details on that subject, it can be very hit and miss: not worth it given other cloud storage options. Personally, I use DropBox which has a 2TB plan at just over $100 (USD) annually. I also bought a 2TB 7200 RPM HDD to create system images of my (1TB) OS drive. By keeping the OS drive size low, and installing high disk size software like games on the other drive(s), the OS drive can be more easily backed up in-whole such as using disk images.
Just some food for thought - whatever you run will be fine and that system could eat other systems for breakfast. Congrats and see you at Angels 20!
-
@airtex2019 dude you rock !
-
@SemlerPDX Thanks,
the raid is not for performance it is for security it keeps the banking, investments Will and all that critical stuff they are also back up to a separate HDD and sometime in the near future a nas. I run Acronis to manage that both making an image and then standard back ups i don;t use the “cloud” don’t use one drive nope never I like owning my data… this pc is a toy mostly and an old guy still dipping his toes in, I play this a couple strategy games, and chess.toying with OC it but really so far don;t need to…

Hey Jim first of all welcome to the madhouse & good to have you along for the ride!
I’ll throw in my 2¢ if I may:
o avoid TARGET for the HOTAS, just juse the alternative launcher (AL) to assign the HOTAS functions. AL is rather nice (I only transitioned to it recently after decades of carefully hand-crafting my keyfiles ) and converting my setup over to AL took maybe half an hour or so.
Of course you can write your own keyfile but it’s not really necessary as there are many good defaults available for the warthog hotas system.
o for headtracking, an LED clip is a must in my opinion, I recommend the DelanClip (great build quality, awesome price and several options available).
For the software, take a look at opentrack (you’ll be able to save good money because opentrack is free, open-source software).o don’t be afraid to join a squadron of like-minded folks, it’s generally the best way to learn if someone is guiding you along during the BMS adventure, and you’ll likely avoid hours of banging your head against the wall when someone else might be able to help out.
All the best & enjoy the ride!
Uwe
