Varjo just dropped their new headset range...
-
And this is the chapest one…
-
That’s obscene. Will they make a consumer version later?
-
@jayb Its been released to business’s first, and consumer’s later, but no, that’s the consumer version AFAIK…
-
I just got to try one out today at the I/ITSEC trade show in Orlando, FL. I’ve been attending I/ITSEC for more than 20 years. (Not every year, though.)
This headset is pretty stunning. 4K per eye, imagery is magnificent. And now I’ve experienced mixed reality for the first time, which is pretty cool. I expect that mixed reality will be improved substantially in the next couple of years.
Yes this headset is quite expensive but it’s half the price of the previous version and outperforms it.
I checked it out at Varjo’s booth, where they had a basic F-16 cockpit setup for the demo. With a headset of this quality and performance, it eliminates any need for a projection display system for the out-the-window visuals. Prior to this I considered that to be the crown jewel of a cockpit simulator. No longer. A top notch VR headset like this is quite close to the same experience with a bunch of advantages. You may have to pay more for the headset but you can eliminate the external displays, screens, projectors, etc, which might result in cost savings that pay for the headset.
I also discovered that it’s just not as easy to get into and out of the cockpit at my age as it was some years ago. Well, I am in my late 50s now…so I guess it had to happen sooner or later. So glad I work out or I’d have needed help getting out!
If I ever do get around to buying/building my own cockpit sim, it’l have a door on it like a car. No need to climb up and over to get in or out.
-
how many RTX4090 is required to add with this headset ?
-
@Buzzbomb You have to pay also and for the hardware to support this monster. And it will need all at top notch performance components. So you might have to go near the 8.000 € threshold in total with it. And am sure for best performance it might need HW to be released in the future…
We all know that Flight Sims in general are demanding… I don’t think someone will take this just and only for BMS…
Surely it’s a piece of jewelry for those that can afford it which will be very few. -
Why that cheap? LOL…
What’s the big deal?? Wait for Pico-5 Pro Max at April 24, 3840x3840 per eye for ~1K$ or so…
And the regular Pico-5 is going to have 2560x2560 which isn’t that far from current Aero, but will be less than 500$
-
@I-Hawk yep Varjo are going cheap
I’m hoping Pico 5 will come into fruition, VR market needs reasonable hardware in 500$ range or it’ll get stuck as expensive toys for rich boys.
I’d take Pico4 even as it is just with new chip that supports hardware AV1 decoding in high bitrates. Its resolution is high enough to make even RTX 4090 struggle with stable 72-90 fps on modern titles without upscaling.
Problem is according to some rumors, company behind Pico is folding out and going out of VR hardware business. -

I didn’t dig deeper, but all the XR series in the past were commercial only, doubt this one is any different. You also must pay a substantial amount for support every year… My guess is an Aero II (consumer) is on the horizon for them…
-
By the time I get back to Falcon seriously I expect these kind of toys to have 4 times the resolution, view angle and passthrough for AR; also that team green or red or any other get us capabilities to run BMS F4 10.xx seamlessly at 500 fps. Kind of my hopes.
This XR-4 has jaw dropping and mouth drooling specs. Would love to have one (and a rig that could run it). -
@I-Hawk Bytedance have just laid off many of their gaming staff. Pico 4 (like Q3) is pretty much a loss leader with the hopes of making money on content and services. While i’m a big fan of my Pico 4, I would not be holding my breath for a new range from them.
-
Varjo and Bigscreen Beyond seem to me to be less in the privacy invasion camp. There is probably little doubt that Quest from Meta/Facebook or Pico from Bytedance/Tiktok are in the other direction. Not sure about Pimax
-
…….did it break?

I hope they will at least get us the Pico5 series out before that… it would be too bad not to.
If the fate of most successful flight sim headsets (Reverb, Pico, Quest? some say also Pimax) is to die, then maybe the time is still too early for the world to adopt, I don’t really know.Unfortunately, the less companies involved, the more we will suffer crazy prices. But I believe it’s just a bump on the road, with time VR will get more and more popular and at some point in the future, all the big companies will be there and there will be competition, like with phones.
