Best way to attack ZSU-23-4 ?
-
Hello everyone,
I have a question: What is the best way to attack a ZSU-23-4 Base Defense Unit? Which weapon is recommended and in what order the units (1 x Dog Ear, 4 x SA-9, 4 x ZSU-23-4) should be attacked? I find it quite difficult to attack such a unit and would be grateful for any advice.

Hello everyone,

With which constraint, in what context?

I use a self-made TE with one ZSU-23-4 unit as target, clear weather, 9 a.m. There I fly a F-16CM-52. Beyond that, no restrictions.

Then there is no danger above 12,000 ft from ground, use any exploding stuff from there.

As @LorikEolmin said, stay high. Are they in one column or dispersed? I would use JSOWs or SDBs (GBU-39) or even wind corrected CBUs. Mavericks would be a waste of money.
In a campaign, I wouldn’t even look at them but smash all the neat surveilance and firecontrol radars of the SA-2, 3, 4, 5, 6. If there are none left, then the 8s.
SA-10 are treated best in an extreme low flying attack - but only in mountaineous terrain. Otherwise, take EWS aircraft with you or overwhelm them with a large SEAD force with HARMs (but they can even shoot down the anti radar missiles).
But yes, against IR-SAMs and Triple-A just stay high.

Well, first of, keep your distance and height. ZSU andd SA9 are short(er) range … so no real threat if not in their (range) envelope.
But problem often is they are accompanied by other stuff SA2/3/6. so… those are preferably dealt first. (harm and stuff)
Above ones (base defense) can be dealt even with clusters , free falls, jdam … etc.
Keep around @12kft , 450-500 kts (w/o tgp) and “pepper” them with Mk20 x2 or more (x4) .
… even lob the bombs (LOFT) if you have SAMs around … then back to 180 NOE.
Of course , this way only PRE-planned or in teamwork - need distraction. If only you - you’ll draw everything they got - mmm. not preferred to be in.Practice !

JDAM, if you can mark it and drop on it before it moves. Otherwise, LMAV.

As long as there is not a bad WX Use -65 as those unit can be on a move/circlying around.
You can use it above the 12000ft, fire & forget (not LMAV), close to 100% PK.

@Steven GBU12 from 23-25000ft when its covered by SA9, AGM65 when its moving or between mountains, CBU when its a swarm of them. Worst choice is Mk.82,84…and i would shoot that DogEar first

In my TE the enemy unit does not move.
Thank you all for your tips. Staying above 12,000 feet and using bombs or MAVs works well. I was probably a bit too aggressive before and also used the cannon from shorter distances… inspired by the movie Iron Eagle
