Tom's Cat

Hahaha…no kidding. Nice work man!
I happen to have a highres walkaround collection of a 1996 AIM-54 and all the text and markings for the guidance/control/propulsion/armament sections are taken right from them.
Also this grey version was used before the end of the Warsaw Pact already, seems the all white version was used only a couple of years.
Now its time to load up 6 Phoenix missiles and two drop tanks, go to 300kias at 10 angels, invert the Cat and push the stick forward

Post #93:
“At this point a thanks to…Onesimus for creating the base A/B/D PSDs on which all this work is based.”Thanks for the warm words Harald! Glad you like it but I still have much to learn and intend to do just that Maybe you can give me some insights into how you go about skinning and come up with these beauties if you got some time and are willing to share that is.
There are a few seriously talented people who motivated me to start all this because of the quality, authenticity and passion which is visible in their work and you are definitely one of them.
Below some ‘historical’ screenshots related to this:
Onesimus’ VF-1 F-14, this should be from BMS2/FF3 I guess:

My first finished skin of the VF-103 F-14 which is, in fact, ZAGGY’s lo-vis VF-103 skin which I literally painted over in PS to create the hi-vis version. At this point I was like ‘What’s a layer?’

This is my first skin created from scratch based on Onesimus’ awesome base PSDs. To this day the fighter squadron that I’ve spent most my time on. Felix, Baby!

Have a good one and happy skinning to you!
Pete
Hey hey
I quote you: "At this point I was like ‘What’s a layer?’ " I know that feeling - painting my first set of F-16s for Pumpy’s great 3d model in the SP series, I didn’t know nothing 'bout layers as well ;-).
It was Ron Nair, who really got me into skinning. First I tried to copy his technique then I tried to add some more life and weathering to the skins. Sometimes it worked out well, somtimes I had limited success. I think - like always - excercise is the key to good skins…Now some years later, having been proud of some of my skins back then, I see some friends in BMS doing absolute stunning work in much less time than I ever did. Wait for the next BMS release and you will witness wonderful artwork of some members of BMS. Heads off to this kind of dedication and talent!Keep up the good work on the Tomcat!
Kind regards
Harald -
Yeah, totally agree nothing can replace trial and error and experience. Learning by doing
Ron ‘Red1’ Nair is an absolute master skinner, that Saudi Tornado he skinned for FF is simply insaine! I’ll keep at it and once the Tomcat stuff is sorted out I’ll spend some time on other ACs and wait for a new Tomcat 3D model - 6 years on this one is enough. For you it must be close to 10
Red1’s bug:
My hommage to him (note RIO’s name and callsign:)
Looking forward to that next release, maybe some day some of my work will find its way into BMS…

By all the gods that’s a bug if i ever saw one! I want both of the birds above and i want them now
-
Stingray, is the bug skin included in your download link on page one? If not can you post a link after Red1’s permission.
-
Na it isn’t. I have moved all of Red1’s skins from FF to BMS which was quite tedious as I had to go through the entire objects folder using Irfanview Thumbnails but I love them too much.
BMS actually already includes some of Ron’s work from FF by default BUT I have no idea how to get in contact with him nor do I know if he is registered here. Since the FF forums got deleted I have no more contact details of anyone…
For your own personal use I’d recommend to install FF6 and extract whatever skin you like from the objects folder and paste them into BMS, that shouldn’t violate any rules and regulations. That being said, I have no idea where this bug skin actually comes from, I suppose the Israeli theater but I haven’t been able to find it yet.
I won’t distribute anyone’s work without permission though anyway especially not anything FF related…too afraid Steve might hunt me down in the streets of Berlin

I hear that man! Can’t not like this bug

After getting a major inspiration from looking at Red1’s and HRenner’s skins I got into the texture work a little earlier than anticipated and so I sat down this morning, got some tutorials I saved like 6 years ago out and after almost throwing my screen off the terrace I finally figured it all out. As practice, I created this texture (fictional) from scratch. This incorporates paths for the base layer, channels for the panels and rivets and some weathering…
This might not look like much but it’s about 10 times more advanced than anything I’ve done before. I’m looking to apply this to a Tomcat skin (really just one) because firing out all these squadrons with the preschool weathering just don’t cut it anymore:)
Given the fact that this method requires a finished skin before finalizing the panel lines it isn’t feasible to do many skins at once. Especially not if they have different base colors for technical reasons so I’ll slow down a bit until I can put sth comparable next to this damn fine bug I’m also working on a 18 so I don’t totally lose my mind over the 14 textures.

Looks really good. Now are you read to be flooded with requests?:D

I most certainly am not
