Tom's Cat
-
After getting a major inspiration from looking at Red1’s and HRenner’s skins I got into the texture work a little earlier than anticipated and so I sat down this morning, got some tutorials I saved like 6 years ago out and after almost throwing my screen off the terrace I finally figured it all out. As practice, I created this texture (fictional) from scratch. This incorporates paths for the base layer, channels for the panels and rivets and some weathering…
This might not look like much but it’s about 10 times more advanced than anything I’ve done before. I’m looking to apply this to a Tomcat skin (really just one) because firing out all these squadrons with the preschool weathering just don’t cut it anymore:)
Given the fact that this method requires a finished skin before finalizing the panel lines it isn’t feasible to do many skins at once. Especially not if they have different base colors for technical reasons so I’ll slow down a bit until I can put sth comparable next to this damn fine bug I’m also working on a 18 so I don’t totally lose my mind over the 14 textures.

Looks really good. Now are you read to be flooded with requests?:D

Thanks man.
Which bombcat do you mean though? The original bombcat was BuNo 162689, that airframe was with VF-41 in 1991, was the VF-41 Bombcat in 1993 and with the Grim Reapers in 2002, it ususally carried the 101 MODEX. There was also the ‘FLIRCAT’ that served with VF-103 when they were still the ‘Sluggers’.
I created both decals in Photoshop a long time ago but never got around to finish the skins…
Happy hunting!

For easier viewing/selection of the skins I recommend Irfanview Thumbnails with the DDS Plugin, you can download it here:
Plugin:

This way you can navigate through the files plane by plane and have a direct overview of the entire skin.

FYI, this minimal markings VF-41 Black Aces Tomcat (included in the pack) belongs to the sister squadron of the VF-84 Jolly Rogers. Both squadrons compose the fleet defense part of Carrier Air Wing 8 (CVW-8) and deployed aboard CVN-68 ‘NIMITZ’ from 1977 onward after transition to the F-14 was complete. The NIMITZ was the first carrier in the Atlantic Fleet with nuclear propulsion.
‘Fast Eagle 102’ which would later down a Libyan SU-22 in the first engagement Tomcat would be involved in in service for the US NAVYSome remarkable historical facts:
1977 - VF-41 and VF-84 deploy aboard NIMITZ as part of CVW-8
1979 - VF-84 was the first TARPS capable squadron of the fleet
1980 - CVW-8 starred in the fictional movie ‘The Final Countdown’
1980 - CVW-8 starts ‘World Cruise’ aboard NIMITZ
1980 - VF-41 and VF-84 participated in operations related to the Iranian hostage crisis in the US embassy in Tehran
1981 - After 144 continuous days at see fatigue starts to take its toll and a EA-6B Prowler crashes onto the deck during landing, the ensuing fires result in the losses of three F-14 Tomcats, one EA-6B Prowler and, sadly, VF-41 lost three of its crew members
1981 - Two of VF-41’s Tomcats, ‘Fast Eagle 102’ and ‘Fast Eagle 107’ were intercepted by two Libyan SU-22 Fitters and subsequently splashed both of them. This marks the first time the F-14 was involved in air-to-air combat for the US NAVY and the first NAVY air combat since the Vietnam War. VF-41 received the Battle ‘E’ for this engagement.
1985 - VF-41 and VF-84 spent 68 days off the coast of Lebanon in response to the hijacking of TWA Flight 847
1986 - Final cruise for CVW-8 while with NIMITZ, they will later join ‘TR’ AKA ‘Teddy’

There is no other Airwing with a similar record from that era…

Hey stingray,
thank you very much for your awesome work to my favorite bird. :bowd:
what a great passion of you to this plane. :woohoo: cool! keep up the good work.for everybody a little question beside: is my install (with working u6 in mp) broken or does your f-14 with weapons in the centerline roll to the side, too? :???:
-
This is a problem with the f-14 model. Doesn’t relate to stingrays work

Though you’re right that its not related to textures, I’m not even sure it is related to an incorrect flight model. I think there must be a bug somewhere because the behavior seems to occur only on certain loadouts and depending on which hardpoints are occupied.
From my limited flight time I can’t tell a difference between the BMS and the FreeFalcon F-14 FM and there it always flew straight as an error…
Mike mentioned this appeared to be fixed in update 5…apparently not.
