Are tanks sitting ducks in real life.

how many tanks have you heard about in iraq/afganistan? how many “other” vehicles
But how many of them had real battles and real enemies, not just victims? Same with F-15 in Iraq… if you just have victims and no real enemies it is easy to make a good markating Shooting down Mig that are running away is like Shooting guys in the back… that is nothing to be proud of…

I think if you suited up in a F-15 over Iraq during Desert Storm you would’n’t be saying that F-15s haven’t fought in any “real battles” :). Besides, most of the F-15 kills were by Israel anyway up close with AIM-9s/Pythons/Guns.

I doubt Iraqis had AWACS, thats a huge advantage Iraqis didnt have, plus a vast superiority in numbers. As far as air battles i think Vietnam and Falklands were far more balanced scenarios.

excuse me??
i think you misunderstood the reason for my post – the guy was saying his son was in tanks - i showed him a cool statistic about how not a single M-1 has been destroyed in battle
yes, we lose humvees and trucks etc to IEDs - but you never hear about a tank being hit ------ i’d say his son is gonna be alright
this isn’t about how much bigger ours is than theirs, ok?
-
its not only about tank, but also about used amunition…IIRC Iraq had T-72, but without modern SABOT ammo…in such a scenario u need much more well placed hits - add better blue SA and air superiority, desert terrain (armor is nicely illuminated for flir after hot day, no clouds )…
Another thing is, where is the ammo stored. In abrams it is rather outside of main tank armor => better post penetration survival chance for crew, but someone said there is a risk for tank disabling even after well aimed higher-calibre machine gun or BVP cannon hit. In Eastern “T” series, ammo is stored inside, means harder to hit, but when hit no chance for crew (big boom and flying turrests) - cold war era approach…
BTW Try to find info about battles in Fallujah…even most modern Abrams were lost there …urban scenerio is very dangerous for tank, even with infantry support.
Higly populated, Eu type cover(biotop) scenario, Eu type weather (usually clouds) and well trained troops using cammo net masking(+foliage cover) = much higher chance for tank and much higher risk especialy for Gunships (manpads see the heli, but heli cant see them all)
…of course electro powered towers independent on main engine are big plus as well in static scenario imo -
Check Liveleak.com threads Ukraine and Syria for Russian tank type vulnerability and urban tank operations,

i know it……did not say T series is better in my post

The PL-01 has a fighting chance.

-
Here’s another…
-
The ability to camoflage ones thermal signature …- How long until they make the thing a drone, no actual crew inside? Or worse, comepletely self thinking? -… is insignificant next to the power of the force.

It’s still seen by the sensor called Eyeball Mk1.
It’s still targeted by a human with AT weapons.
It still has to follow terrain allowing heavy vehicles. That makes it a 1-dimensional asset in many tactical situations, with visual line of sight required. One might ask the question: Why use a tank, when 1 -3 shots from a 155 mm howitzer with Excalibur grenades shot some 30 km behind FLOT can solve the same task without exposing it to enemy fire. Or maybe a MLRS shot/salvo ?
As long as the tank is hidden, it can really hand out some nasty surprises……
-
so much expensive technology in the “PL-01”; it’s screaming for getting nuked or tank mined => abandoned.

Just seen this, clearly an advance on active armour.
