BMS Overload
-
Earlier this year I decided to get back into Falcon again following a ~10 year absence, after managing to retrieve my trusty TM SWF22 FLCS and TQS from storage though this did forced me to play BMS 4.32.7 under XP. There was really no budget to purchase a new USB HOTAS , at least not one that was going to cut it for me. However, I was able to add some of the gorgeous looking new aircraft and verhicle models, got myself some head tracking gear and finally managed to win my very first Falcon 4.0 campaign. :blowpar:
An unforeseen set of circumstances have landed me with a TM Cougar with RCS pedals at quite a bargain and I’ve now managed to program these to my liking, ditched the XP partition on my PC and installed BMS 4.33.3 with Balkans, ITO and Nordic theaters. Coming from the RP5, SP4 and BMS 2.x days of Falcon, BMS 4.32.7 was awesome but 4.33.3 is amazing and these newly updated theaters are mind blowing.
So now I really have absolutely no idea what I should do now… what campaign should I play first? Balkans? or… ITO? … or Nordic? Or warm up with another round over Korea first?!
Having just flown a test flight in a new Under Siege campaign in Balkans 3.6, discovering that I seriously need to start lifting weights when flying with the Cougar (man that thing is heavy!) … absolutely crapping my pants when that Serbian SA-3 launcher started unloading on me and discovering that doing a cross-wind landing with rudder pedals for the very first time isn’t as easy as I would have thought… I will have to admit to suffering from full BMS sensory overload here.
How do you guys decide what you are flying next, with so much choice out there? And then I’m not even considering doing carrier ops in the Hornet or taking the fully VSTOL-capable AV-8B for a spin?!
Now if I would have to spend $70 for each of these, I probably would know better where to start
but wow, BMS 4.33.3 is seriously impressive stuff. And the choice, I mean there’s so much choice now. Just insane.
Thanks guys, I better ask the wife to slide some more pizza underneath the door into the man cave, looks like I’ll be here a while. :blowpar:

You dont need to use those rudder pedals for xwind landings in an F-16 Tazz, in fact its rather strongly recommended against. Use bank angle to control the FPM on the threshold, along with stick movement to control fore-aft movement. Yeah, basically the opposite of most conventional aircraft.
ITO can make for an eye opener for being able to spot battalions out the window sans TGP… black vehicles against yellow sand makes for a pretty obvious target. Worth a shot Id say. Personally Im still a big fan of korea, though - the textures there really make for a huge improvement over 4.32, especially for low level flying.

Not really here to recommend anything except to remind you to make sure the wife knows exactly what you’re getting into and expectations from both sides of the relationship. You may have an awesome flight, but if you come down to the kitchen and it’s overcast, well….

To me there is no comparison to flying online. It becomes very real. If you hook up with someone online you will find out what you like real quick. I love to practice AAR but I still cant do it without an FSS so I would look into that. Also beg borrow or steal 3 monitors.

I don’t think my current rig can drive 3 monitors but it would be incredibly cool indeed. And yes, online would be awesome - I was a member of the 87th VFW for many years. Unfortunately I’m a little timezone and bandwidth limited down here in NZ. As far as I know there are no VFW’s in NZ, not that fly BMS anyways.

Hey Tazz,
good to hear you’re getting into BMS again. I really enjoy designing TEs, mostly just for practise but also some that can be won or lost depending on your performance, so maybe that’s something that you would enjoy looking into. Not as massive and intimidating as a full-blown campaign, restricted to a small part of your favourite place to fly (mine currently is centered around Crete in the excellent IKAROS theater), and you can adjust the difficulty to your liking by adding or removing hostile units.
Also “extending one’s kit” can be great fun and rewarding in itself, like adding an android tablet or old phone to use an an ICP/DED, or picking up a cheap 2nd monitor to use with some velcro’ed on MFDE frames, getting Voice Attack to work to add to the immersion and so on and so on.
All the best,
Uwe

don’t forget Korea 89

mine does… and it’s on 1200 vertical… so if u go for 1080 might work. The ouch factor would be the 2GB vram on your EVGA GTX760.

IMHO:
Korea is good due to the short distances to travel to FLOT (not played ITO, but that looks fun).
I have been playing Balkans and having a blast.
I have not done much Multiplayer, but the small amounts I did were well worth it. I was flight lead and it increased the workload significantly (and it was a simple TE too). I’ll put it this way: I am impressed when people in RL do missions comms out!BMS is always an F-16 sim, and hence I spend 90% of my time in that. I have flirted with the F/A-18 because carrier landings looked fun, but I have not fought a long campaign (the ramp start is kludged - good but kludged) so that kind of spoils it for me (there is no DED in the F/A-18). I have also whisked the Harrier away for a cheeky practice sortie - somehow that feels much more real it terms of RAMP and avionics so I might go there and fly low and try not to shoot my own ground units!

Argh…. installed that one. Yet another campaign/theater to try. And then I’ve heard rumours about this upcoming ITO 80’s campaign that seems a must have as well!!

There are several players from Australia and NZ knocking around currently and obviously many more I`m not aware of so if zone is an issue for multiplayer there ought to be enough action closer to home. See these guys both on discord channels and Veterans-gaming server amongst other places.
I see you already found at least 1 of the bms related discord channels

There’s the 801st: http://forum.801sttfw.com/ but, you’d have to put up with the likes of Shadow, that may be asking a bit much for anyone.
Every now and then we do a Saturday evening flight which I think works out to your Sunday afternoon (?)

Hi Tazz.
I am a bit like yourself. Just coming back after many years away. Just grabbed an X52 Pro, and enjoying re-familiarising myself with the viper. I have never flown online. Back in the day, my internet was crap, but a lot better these days. I am in Oz, so time zone’s won’t be too much of an issue if you want to try to get a flight in. Just don’t expect too much! I am still learning how to use my hotas, let alone how to use the f16 systems! Those theatres you mention sound interesting. Where do you get them from?
Cheers - AC

The two Discord channels, one being the BMS ready room and other the Falcon Lounge one are a great place to start getting a flight together I reckon?
The download links to the theaters can all be found here on the BMS forum. Just go to the Theaters section and their relevant sub-sections for Balkans, ITO (Israel), Nordic and you should find a topic there announcing the latest version. The typical convention is to keep the first post updated with the latest release info and download link(s) so you don’t have to browse the entire thread to find it.
Have a look - if you still struggle to find the download links, let me know and I’ll help you out. You can usually find me on Discord in the evenings - just give me a ping.
