If we could add one button the the Cougar throttle, what would we use it for?
-
Here’s the deal, I could probably have one more pushbutton on the throttle cougar but I’m wondering what would be it’s best use?
The obvious answer is the hobo switch which is not impelmented in BMS (maybe one day) and that’s the exact same reason I might output that button and place it under the trottle handle where the Hobo switch is supposed to be.
That kind of prepare the future. But in the meantime If you guys had an opportunity to program one more button on the throttle, what would you program? Thanks for any input
-
Personaly I would set the Bump switch in place of the Hobo.
-
A hands on button for the throttle… hmm. HOBO isnt really useful for us anyway, with the current state of lighting and night vision (not talking about NVGs). So an extra button to do something I currently use, which is not already hands on.
Well, it should be something frequently accessed during high task saturation flight, which isnt going to be a problem if its accidentally used. So LG is already out. Something that controls part of the HUD perhaps? Like, to cycle the DED/BAI/PFL in the HUD, for instance.
-
Hard to say… I only use a Cougar, so my needs for extra buttons are different than those with MFD, and definitely from people with pits (like yourself)…
I now have it set to a shifted function on the CMS, but I guess a physical slap switch would generally be more useful than a HOBO, IMO. I perhaps don’t know the full extent of that switch, but I don’t think you should ever come in a situation where you urgently need to kill all the lights, while being able to expend countermeasures a fraction of a second earlier may mean the difference between life or death.

Thanks guys
(not talking about NVGs).
but hold on a minute BW !
HOBO purpose is to switch off all non NVIS lighting off isn’t it.
So the answer to that question is probably obvious:
what about simply toggling ON/OFF the NVGsThere is no cockpit control for that one, there’s no Hotas control for that one. So I guess it’s on the NVG self, isn’t it?
And we have and need that callback as well but nowhere to actually put it …
So NVG toggle seems a very interesting candidateDj,

you mean the HSD range bump?
Eagle eye

good point, I have the slap switch functionnal in my pit but you just made me realise I never used it. Probably don’t have the muscle memory yet….
-
NVGs and slap switch sound good. Of course, you probably already have an actual slap switch.
-
you mean the HSD range bump?
Nope. I am refering to the bump (or slap) switch triggering the CMDS program 6 (or 5 I do not remember) … Might be one more reactive or preventive flare sequence. But as BW said, maybe you have it alreay in your pit.
-
hobo and slap switch yes.
I suggest Detent Trigger… maybe its a part of the throttle rail system and not switch, but if Cougar had it and works also as a DX switch, it should bring more convenience to the sim.
Maybe you can assign it detent callback to shutdown/start up the engine, or maybe you can add TrackIR center or ZOOM toggling callback…Flight simulator needs additional HOTAS switch than the real one, as we operate our view or something else by keys or axis, that does not need to do in RL.
Thrustmaster was so wise to add HOTAS WARTHOG an additional AP lever to the stick, push into comm switch and axis to the friction lever on the throttle basement. -
Yes DJ, I already have the SLAP switch
And Chihiro, it’s a great idea as well. I do have a the throttle arm and the real mechanism for idle and cutoff so I personnaly do not need the idle detent callback, but it’s indeed a good idea for those who might not have the full arm…
-
VAC trigger for me would be great. Got one shifted, but less shifted functions the better IMO
-
Another great idea, thanks - although my take on that one is to have it combined with the UHF ptt. Not on its own
In my case, it’s all DX so VAC PTT is an issue I wasn’t able to solve yet -
co-located? combined?
-
combined, thanks

It’s a minor step away from DX, but with Foxy (not sure about any other software), you’re able to assign a key to a DX-button.
E.g. for recordings, due to background noise, I don’t want my mic activated all the time, but only when I actually PTT.
I use Dunc_DX, in case it’s important, and PTT in my recording software is set to ‘s’, so
- in the .tmm, add:
PTT = s
- in the .tmj, add:
BTN T2 /H {DX21 PTT} BTN T3 /H {DX20 PTT}
There you have your PTT set, while maintaining full DX-functionality.

thanks, but my throttle is not connected to the cougar anymore, it’s a full DX. I can’t use foxy anymore.
-
I would use it for a shift key, if I didn’t have a Warthog stick grip and it’s CMS->dwn function available.

Do you use the CMS down on a Cougar setup? If yes, how do you make this button work please?

Curious as well…
-
On the desktop, I use CMS-> dwn as a shift key (I think mos people using Cougar stick use the Paddle as a command shift key) to do a couple things -
-
double CMS->dwn shifts my hat from POV to Trim; hold CMS->dwn for greater than 2 sec shifts the hat back to POV.
-
CMS->dwn+Pinky to command Eject…without an actual handle to pull, “squeezing the stick” gets me an Eject command. Very quick and effective!
I’m sure I’ll think of other shift layer uses for CMS->dwn once my pit is built and running, but for now and future I can’t/won’t live without this button/function - so glad that Arend has is new FCC WH board available and that’s what I’ll use in my pit to get full function from a WH grip (I’ll be needing a second one, I think…).
Edit: to clarify, I use a WH stick and a Cougar throttle!

Yeap I agree idle detent is a good idea!
