HARM effect

…yeah, you’d think that. When it comes to weapons you can never judge the book by it’s cover.
-
So I guess one of the ways to know if the HARM has taken out the radar is that it doesn’t appear on the RWR, but then again it could be that the radar has temporarily stopped transmitting…

Correct.
-
Is it normal and if it is what’s the reason that when HARM hits its target, there’s no fire or smoke or the boom effect like when bombs or mavericks hit their target?
Good Day, Kenguan. You’re into SEAD vs. DEAD territory with this subject. Shoot a HARM at something, you don’t really know what’s going on except it’s not radiating. Hit it with a Mav or the bomb of your choice…it’s suppressed if it’s in a million pieces. That, BTW, is a quote from Viper Pilot. Read that and you’ll get an eyeful on that subject.

You have to sort of change your thinking when it come to EW and/or EA - getting something to stop transmitting is effectively a “kill”…better known as a “soft kill”. A soft kill happens any time a threat is denied it’s intent…getting a Mig to turn around and denying it an objective is also a soft kill. In the EW / EA world soft kills happen far more frequently. Yeah, they aren’t as spectacular but they are still a tactical victory.

the HTS can tell you in 4.34 if the radiating source have taken out or not.
-
…so…in these cases you have to ask yourself - did you take it out, or did it just stop radiating because you shot at it, to keep you from shooting at it again?
-
if it stopped radiating to avoid being shot then it will turn green, and the HARM will miss. If it kept being not green and the HARM got it and it is destroyed then it will disappear completely from the HTS
-
In my experience
Harm hits target- boom fire and smoke visible from miles away
Harm miss and impacts a hill somewhere nothing happens at all
Use Shift+7 to view the missile on the way to its target and you’ll see what I’m talking about -

Great point Stevie! It’s not so much rewarded in game, but stopping a threat from completing its mission accomplishes the same goal as destroying it in the short term. Remember reading about that’s all that matters most for SAM operators, if you have forced the enemy aircraft to jettison their weapons and turn home the mission is accomplished
