Useful information (docs) for Carrier Ops
-
Hello,
i mean, that i read something, that there exists a manual for carrier operations with the F/A 18. But i cannot find it.
At this moment i can start and land on a carrier. But i think, i do it not realistic. Has anyone a guidline or a tutorial, which switch i
have to use at several time?Best regards,
Marvel -
The real world docs are out there. F-18A/B/C/D and F-18E/F NATOPS have a general overview of Case 1,2, and 3 launches and recoveries. The LSO NATOPS goes into more details about said cases.
-
Thanks for answer.
This real world documents are a little bit to detailed.
I thought, there have to be other BMS documentation? For example, if you start the training “carrier landing”, then you get the tip to read the manual.

Little bit of info, incomplete, in the BMS training manual.
But most if what I know if from Jane’s F18 and the FSX VRS Hornet. Also OJT.

there is a utube carrier qualification video, i will find it. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=4&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjI4IySgJzOAhWEOSYKHUkxCDsQuAIILzAD&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D_Wce3qb0eHA&usg=AFQjCNGPmg3WGMhazHmtLnjfkK7Jtf6XmA
then there are a lot of videos of carrier ops in that loc
and some ifo in docs
correct radio channel, remove tie downs, wings down, flaps down, advanced flight models only for catapult are some details to regard.

Hello,
i tested the F/A 18C a little bit and have some questions to this aircraft.
1./ Can i see in the cockpit the air brake position? In the F-16 i have on the left
side an indicator. But in the F/A-18C i did not find something similar yet.2./ On the left side, i have a FLAP switch. With RMB or LMB i can change to
Full , Normal or Auto.In the documentation :
C:\Falcon BMS 4.33 U1\Docs\Checklists & Cockpit Diagrams\F-18 Cockpit Diagram\3D cockpit F-18 Hornet.pdfyou can see the keystrokes:
AFFullFlap -1 0 0X44 2 0 0 1 “Flaps-Set To Full”
AFNoFlap -1 0 0X43 2 0 0 1 “Flaps-Set To Null”I tested this keytroke and they have no effect in the F/A-18C. Do i something wrong or
are they bugged?3./ Can i see the autopilot switch position inside the F/A-18C ? I mean this keystrokes.:
SimLeftAPSwitch -1 0 0X2 2 0 0 1 “Ckpit-AP Switch Left”
SimRightAPSwitch -1 0 0X3 2 0 0 1 “Ckpit-AP Switch Right”They have an effect, but i dont know the position inside the aircraft.
4./ If i start and land on a carrier, i have to set the flap to full. Without this setting the
aircraft will crash into water after start.the following speed is necessary to land
- Full flap = 150 knots
- Auto flap = 225 knots
Are this information right or do i something wrong? How do you land? With auto flap? And if yes, how
fast you are then?Regards,
-
No - there is no indication of speed brake position in the Hornet other than a light on the upper left brow to indicate BRAKES; and there is no autopilot switch - it’s all controlled by software via the UFC/UFCD.
Your approach speed will depend on gross weight - for the Hornet (either one) you want to fly/land on-speed - this means capturing and maintaining the Indexer centered and the bracket (which should be “backwards” from the Viper) centered on the VV. Land on-speed and not fast - like most Viper drivers do…gear and flaps up/down at 250; half flaps for takeoff; full flaps for landing.

1. I thought BMS took the eyebrow ‘Brakes’ indicator in the F/A-18C away in v 4.33.1??
2. Switch works. Proper key file lines are (set here as ‘no key assigned’):
SimTEFCMDAuto 115 0 0XFFFFFFFF 0 0 0 1 “CKPIT: F-18 FLAP Switch - AUTO”
SimTEFCMDHalf 115 0 0XFFFFFFFF0 0 0 1 “CKPIT: F-18 FLAP Switch - HALF”
SimTEFCMDFull 115 0 0XFFFFFFFF 0 0 0 1 “CKPIT: F-18 FLAP Switch - FULL”3. Yes. Middle MFD, lower right corner.
4. As stevie says. Gear and full flaps at 250 knts. On Speed from there. (NATOPs) Maximum allowable gross landing weight 34,000 pounds. With around 32000 pounds gross weight, expect 130-ish knots in BMS.

Thanks for the answers.
2. Switch works. Proper key file lines are (set here as ‘no key assigned’):
SimTEFCMDAuto 115 0 0XFFFFFFFF 0 0 0 1 “CKPIT: F-18 FLAP Switch - AUTO”
SimTEFCMDHalf 115 0 0XFFFFFFFF0 0 0 1 “CKPIT: F-18 FLAP Switch - HALF”
SimTEFCMDFull 115 0 0XFFFFFFFF 0 0 0 1 “CKPIT: F-18 FLAP Switch - FULL”I tested this keystrokes. 2 of them work. But the keystroke
SimTEFCMDFull 115 0 0XFFFFFFFF 0 0 0 1 “CKPIT: F-18 FLAP Switch - FULL”seems to be bugged. It is not displayed in the falcon setup menu and it doesnt works ingame. Is my assumption correct?

Actually, your airspeed will be the same for on-speed at any given gross weight, no matter how fast the CV is moving or the wind is blowing over deck - your ground speed will change…but you can control your overshoot/undershoot with AOA and power.
-
The lines I gave you above are not bugged, but need keys assigned to them (they are ‘no key assigned’ as posted).
However, in the default keyfiles there is a typo in one callback and it shows as xxxTEFCDMxxx instead of xxxTEFCMDxxx. I believe that may be the issue you’re describing.
Edit:
This is from the default BMS - Full.key:
SimTEFCMDInc 115 0 0x58 1 0 0 -0 “CKPIT: F-18 FLAP Switch - Step Up”
SimTEFCMDDec 115 0 0x57 1 0 0 -0 “CKPIT: F-18 FLAP Switch - Step Down”
SimTEFCMDAuto 115 0 0XFFFFFFFF 0 0 0 -0 “CKPIT: F-18 FLAP Switch - AUTO”
SimTEFCMDHalf 115 0 0XFFFFFFFF 0 0 0 -0 “CKPIT: F-18 FLAP Switch - HALF”
SimTEFCDMFull 115 0 0XFFFFFFFF 0 0 0 -0 “CKPIT: F-18 FLAP Switch - FULL”Change the ‘-0’ to ‘1’ will allow it to show and be changed in the game UI.
Fix the highlighted typo to ‘CMD’.

I stand corrected.

You are right. That was the reason. I copied the keystrokes from the BMS FULL file. After i change from CDM to CMD the
SimTEFCMDFull -1 0 0X44 2 0 0 1 “CKPIT: F-18 FLAP Switch - FULL”works fine for me. Thanks.
Maybe the developers could correct for the next release the BMS - Full.key file to avoid misunderstanding in the future.
And in the doc folder a devoloper could correct this PDF.:
E:\Falcon BMS 4.33 U1\Docs\Checklists & Cockpit Diagrams\F-18 Cockpit Diagram\3D cockpit F-18 Hornet.pdfBest regards,

I moved this topic to documentation forum and renamed it. Keep adding useful information missing from the manuals. It’s a great idea and might be collected into a full dedicated BMS manual at some point

Hello,
one solution for this question could be the following.
1./ Can i see in the cockpit the air brake position? In the F-16 i have on the left
side an indicator. But in the F/A-18C i did not find something similar yet.I used in the past a special sound file to indicate, that airbrakes are opened.
If someone want, then replace the orignal file after a backup, and you get a special sound, if airbrakes are open.
Rename
C:\Falcon BMS 4.32\Data\Sounds\brakwind.ogg
to
C:\Falcon BMS 4.32\Data\Sounds\brakwind_backup.oggand then use the following new file inside the folder above.
Regards

I often use the breakwind sound…

Stevie indicates a ‘brakes’ light should be in the left eyebrow. I am certain it was in the original 4.33 release. But now it’s gone in the update (4.33.1.). Maybe it needs to be added back?

Yes - if it’s not there anymore, it should be.

Hello again,
1./ Has someone the correct UHF/VHF frequencies of the several aircraft carriers?
2./ It is possible to locate the carriers with a tacan channel? Do they have an ils frequency?Regards
