Kuwait Theater tester version 2 preview
-
With biggest thanks to Polak in mind, I thought I’d give you all a preview of where I’m up to with the new terrain tiles for Kuwait Theater.
The tiles are a mix of original work by Polak including the work he did exclusively for Kuwait and for the Israel Theater, and some of my own work using the same tiles as a base, with some photo-real stuff in there too. It’s my intention to keep as little as possible of the Israel tile-set as I do not want the theater to be a replica of that fine work, rather it is unique in it’s own right. Unfortunately though, due to the area of the world we’re working in, similarities are always going to be there, and if we’re honest, a lot of the Israel work fits here perfectly.
Points to bear in mind -
- It’s still very much work in progress… I still need to work lots on this; for example, city limits.
- Large expanses of open desert, cities, etc. currently use 1 base tile only. I have another L2/O2 with lots of variation in, and this improves the overall look tenfold, but for ease of editing I’m still running with the bare-bones L2 file.
- Please don’t ask when it’ll be released. It’ll be available for public download when I’m happy to release something with my name against it!
The roads, for example, now contain approximately 45 separate elements per terrain type. I wanted to avoid the commonly seen wavy 90 degree turns and sharp corners as much as possible, so set about introducing smooth turns and 45 degree runs too. This should show in more “real” looking roads. Then of course, I wanted dual carriageways as well as single carriageways… Lots of work, especially for someone like me with little/no artistic talent.
Anyway, hope you enjoy this 20 minute tour. Comments are welcome, positive or negative. I don’t mind either, so long as they are constructive.

Great work so far mate! I really like the textures you used, and as you know already this is the theatre I like the most!
A suggestion, will be possible to include in the theatre release some ODS era skins? You know Desert Pink Tornados, Saudi Tornados and Eagles…

This looks awesome!
What are the dimensions of the theater? Any chance of a screenshot of the map screen?
Cheers

Thanks. Same size as stock Korea, 64x64, which (IMHO) is plenty big enough for our needs. I considered 128 segment, but in the end decided it was far too much work and they don’t work properly anyway.
Thanks also to Ripper

How many objects are in the cam file?
In Rippers screenshot, is it displaying ALL??
Just curious.
Thanks,

Not sure, above image is showing All, but the count has grown since that release. Will check later and advise.

Nice, I am a sucker for a “realistic” theater and there is nothing more real lately than flying sorties over Iraq (even if it isnt Mosul)

It doesn’t have combat per se but I have been flying in X-Plane 10. I like the global nature. I can put a jet at almost any location in the world. Dropped some bombs on Mosul yesterday.

Campaign on this theater is a recreation of Desert Storm or Iraq Freedom?
