Naval Ops Navigation
-
I am a big fan of naval ops, but have not tried it in BMS (using 4.33 U3). To get started I have done a fair amount of reading and forum searching and I am confused. BMS Manual states that ILS does not function for carriers and provides a list of CV TACAN channels. TCN for Enterprise is listed as 028X; however, in the carrier launch training TE,the E TCN channel seems to be 106X. Is there and updated list of TCN channels or is the TE an anomaly?
Balkans theater lists ILS freqs for Enterprise and Vinson. Does ILS works for carriers in Balkans? Only Balkans? Assistance appreciated.

ILS works on carriers.

Well as Mav correctly said, ILS works on carriers with BMS 4.33 and later versions (not perfectly, but it works).
Enterprise carrier in Korea theater has TACAN channel of 028X and ILS of 111.10.
Enterprise carrier in Balkans theater has TACAN channel of 016X and ILS of 109.35 (check the file “Balkans Navaids list.pdf” into the “Docs” subfolder).
I didn’t check the documentation for Korea, but for Balkans theater is correct.

Remember that the avionics in the Bug in BMS are Viper avionics stuffed into a Hornet pit. This means that the TACAN and ILS systems work like the Viper via the ICP/DED. The TACAN channel that you see on the middle MFCD behaves as the backup TACAN which may be where some of the confusion comes from.
Also note that in order to use TACAN or ILS navigation you’ll need to switch the navigation mode just like you would in the Viper. IIRC this is done via one of the OSBs on the middle MFCD.

I’m gonna guess you nailed it …. setting the MFD backup instead of the ‘DED’ ILS/Nav page.
Yes, Nav mode is on the OSB on the bottom left of the 3rd MFD … button 16, I think.
In stock installs for Korea, all the carriers are ILS 111.10, TACAN is different for each carrier.
The HSI CDI in the Hornet (C-model at least) is backwards and is VERY sensitive. An extracted display works better. However the Command Steering in the HUD and the Needles on the floaty ball thingy* work fine.
(* - I can NEVER remember the name of that GD thing!! Attitude display indicator???)

You successfully answered your own question. Sometimes also called Attitude Direction Indicator, Attitude Directional Indicator, Attitude Director Indicator, or just Attitude Indicator.

TX for replies. The backup TACAN channel on center display was a source of confusion. Think I have it now.

Reviving a bit of a dated thread, but is there any way to get TACAN navigation aids in the HUD? Or even a way to get one decimal precision on T/R TACAN ranges? I know you can get AA TACAN range in the DED out to one decimal, but haven’t found a way for ground/ship stations. Would be nice to have more accurate range info around the ship.
And on a slightly different topic, is the -2.5° pitch line in the same place on the Hornet HUD? I’m pretty sure the real aircraft doesn’t have that, but since we do is it still at -2.5 or is it adjusted for a -3.5 glideslope. In other words, can I use the pitch line to substitute for difficulty seeing the meatball at range on a computer screen? Or is it still set for Viper land based approaches?

If you know the GPS coordinates of the TACAN station (means for ground ones - Not aircraft carriers), then you can insert them over an STPT and leave it as current. With the INSTR mode to TCN, you will have at HSI the proper infos for bearing and DME from the TACAN station and at the HUD the distance with 1 decimal digit ;).

No.

with the HSI no, but EHSI gives dme in decimal. At least from the shared memory. haven’t checked in 3D cockpit for Electronic HSI equipped aircraft but I don’t see any reason why not? (havne’t checked as I hardly fly these blocks)
