A - A Refueling..?

More that the Viper sucks back hard on the gas.
No, it’s more that I’m flying over Altis for two or three hours at a time. My standard load is 8 GBUs. That’s only eight bomb drops. You would think in three hours, 8 bombs would go fairly quick, but they do not. Then there is ingress time (there are not many Greek airfields close to Altis, and for our purposes the Altis island airfield is ‘hostile’) and egress time (because I like to land safely) and when I am feeling daring I play the TE with the MIG’s that rush up from Turkey to try to intercept me occasionally…
So all in all, it has very little to do with the amount of gas in the Falcon and more to do with the fact that if I take fuel tanks I am sacrificing half or more of my bomb load, and thus don’t need the bombs. But if I take the bombs, I need the gas.
So I add the tanker. And some escorts for it, and two HAVCAPs for it, and an AWACs and some escorts and it’s HAVCAP. And that makes the whole game more fun because now there are a lot of aircraft in the sky, and they all have schedules so they are constantly rotating and it feels more like a living breathing world.

Finally managed to refuel for the first time last night. Turned the hud down so it was just barely visible which seemed to help.
I did wait until the tanker had finished his turn though, there was no chance that I’d have managed to do it within the turn.

Congrats! Great feeling, isn’t it?
I’ve also never managed to stay on the boom when the tanker enters a turn, so I usually set up a tanker track with extra long legs (50nm or so ;))

Interestingly, I have an easier time when the tanker is banking then I do when he’s flying straight.

I find it easier to get into the rough spot in a turn, but harder to stay there.

Awesome. Only problem is when I’ve been in the campaign I’ve never been anywhere remotely close to a tanker anyway, it’s always been well over 100 miles away!

If you have formation skills (pretty much essential when flying in MP, at least in a squadron), hooking up and staying in the boom in turn is doable. Not the easiest thing, but not a huge task either.

Find the tanker flights in the ATO to display their flight plans and see where the tracks are, if you are not happy with them join the tanker squadron and modify the flight plan of future tanker flights.

Well, back in the cockpit tonight, and I finally manged to refuel!! The only thing that made a difference to me was keeping the air brakes on, made keeping my speed easier to manage. Funny thing was, once I made contact, I was all chuffed with myself. 10 seconds later the tanker anounces he’s entering a turn lol, I even managed to keep on the boom! Did it again after that just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke. Thanks all for the suggestions and help I’ve learned a good bit.

I do best with the HUD dimmed to nothing but a glass plate. After that its just small inputs, patience and practice. It’s much like hovering a helicopter or flying a glider on tow. Once you get good it becomes increasingly hard to understand people who don’t.

I should add - I’ve never really got past the first few missions of a campaign so that may change once air superiority is established so it’s safe for the tanker to get closer to the front.

That is true. Question, is AAR meant to be done before ingress or after egress? I would imagine after egress, but how do I keep my wingmen from RTB when they hit bingo and heading to alternate without trying for a tanker?

In ODS they often did both. But there were other things going on - like Aircraft stationed at one airfield being pushed to another airfield to standby until their launch times, where they would refuel, then launch and refuel again, then fly the mission and refuel on the way back in case their destination airfield was closed (which was apparently common from all the books I have read).

Edit the take off time to be 20 minutes earlier than the rest of the package, then schedule both in and out.
