HMS usage without radar?
-
AIM-9 SLAV(E) using either cursor enable to temporarily shift it or set it permanently on the SMS page. When in BORE and HMCS is active HMCS will direct the AIM-9.
SLAV = radar
BORE = straight ahead (no HMCS) or HMCS -
…use the UNCAGE button.

As said, holding CURSOR ENABLE will keep the Sidewinder diamond in your view. While holding CURSOR ENABLE (the diamond should be in the center of your view as you look around), look at a target, hit UNCAGE and it’ll stick on him. If the diamond doesn’t lock-on and drifts merrily away, hit UNCAGE again to center it (all the while keeping CURSOR ENABLE held down) and repeat trying to uncage on the target until it sticks. The tone growl will change and you can release CURSOR ENABLE and Fire!
Will add here another cool thing you can do with JHMCS. With Radar On (if in Dogfight override mode with “NO RADAR”, hit TMS up once to Turn radar on), you can hold TMS UP to display an oval wherever you’re looking, Release TMS UP when you have a target in this oval, and the Radar will lock it up. Obviously has to be within limits.
The JHMCS is my favorite part of BMS. I love using both the Radar Lock Up feature and the AIM-9X off boresite (especially when the radar is off….so sneaky!).

Strictly speaking the cursor enable will (while held) shift the missile from BORE to SLAV or SLAV to BORE,to the opposite of its current setting. If the missile is set BORE then holding cursor enable will set SLAV and (while held) will set BORE when the setting is SLAV. It’s the “opposite mode” button.
SLAV means slaved to radar. BORE means either at boresight if HMCS is off or to HMCS center if it’s on.
AIM-9s are set SLAV/BORE per missile so make sure to set all of them individually to the desired settings. This allows changing settings by selecting another missile which is configured differently with Missile Step (short).

All very cleaver and sneaky, “mesa likes, maybez wez be friends”

HMCS for the 9X without radar works like a charm Ref to -34, 1.11.4 and use your Cursor Enable button
Come on, Molni, we shouldnt have to tell a veteran like you to RTFM
In which part of key config should I find this button? It this a real button in F-16 on any stick or MFD? Yesterday I configured my HOTAS with a HUN Falcon veteran and did not mentioned this button.
(Also was very strange our ramp start training. I flew the TE what he launched. 3 times in a row my left MFD never went online only right while I did what I have done many times… I loaded a TE from my rig in solo flight and worked has had to be. Is no spearate ON/OFF switch for L/R MFD…)

Very real button on the throttle, the same one that is used to move the cursor : if you press it, you “unslave” the seeker.
NB : On most versions, it’s a button that must be held pressed. If you release it, AIM-9 seekers go back to slaved mode.EDITED so as not to leave false information on the forum

The cursor enable is the click on the radar cursor, of course it is the same IRL. You can also go in BORE directly in the MFD, and use the uncage on the throttle.

In the new keyfiles, you will find it in the TQS section, about a third of the way down. The Cursor Enable is the z-axis of the radar cursor on the throttle - basically you press it inwards with your thumb, and it toggles SLAV and BORE modes as discussed previously. Not only is it a real button in the F-16, its also a real button on the Cougar HOTAS as well! You will be hard pressed to find a BMS pilot using the HOTAS correctly who will not steer you towards using it for precisely this purpose, cueing of the x-ray seeker to the JHMCS LOS.
I cant think of any reason for your MFD to act as described. Can you describe it in a little more detail?
-
Haven’t found the opportunity to test this, but from what I read in the Avionics Configurator (under Avionics - “Cursor Enable as toggle”) and TO-BMS1F-16CM-34-1-1 (p. 124 - item 1.11.4.4 “BORE/SLAVE Toggle”), I understand that the Cursor Enable can now also be set up as a dead-man’s-switch. What I suppose this means is that even when you have the AIM-9 set to BORE on the MFD, you still need to keep Cursor Enable pressed in order to lock and fire the missile, for example to avoid accidental launches?

Best guess: MFD was ON, but DTC was empty for that slot

I read that and I did not find aswer this is why I asked. Now after I got reply here I can do it the only thing what I had to do hold the button of cursor enable after I have ucaged. Great!
OFF (?)
What is the problem to me and maybe for many virtual pilots? Even I know how it work I read the manual again and I cannot find a single word about what should do if I wish to use JHMCS without radar… The “cursor enable button” words are simply not anywhere in 1.11.4. part of manual.
I’m master most of things which existed since SP3 or F5.x but many new features of BMS4.32 and 4.33 are cannot be learned from the manuals to me. I admire the effort of BMS Team but for me the manual simply does not work to me…
I learn very quickly things because I’m not Falcon noob but this topic shows exactly my problem. I posted a question, a very short good answer came quickyl, I did a 3 min test and I have learned how can be used JHMCS. Using manual, spending hours (!) resulted only frustration.Yesterday with a HUN friend I learned within 1 hours so many things what was not possible after reading 10+ hours of manual and trying again and again the same thing alone. I have to say I’m not alone with this problem. Many of Hungarian players said also on FF manual it was almost impossible to find anything. For FF5 I wrote a 180 pagle long manual wihch explained almost everything intall and setting config editor and even rarely or literally never used options such as reprogramming STP via ICP or using markpoints. (During 10+ years I have never used any of them…)
I simply do not understand how can be so long EN manuals and why provide so few help for not a newbie in Falcon world. I cannot imagine how can learn to fly anybody using only these manuals who never flew with Falcon.
ON
I go ahead on a very long path to learn BMS4.33.

@Red:

No, was not. Even if the DTC is empty you can set manually MFD page because you see OFF text. The problem the left MFD simply did not worked. I can do rampstart because except 3-4 steps it is 100% same as was in SP3.

your method is what we call spoon feeding Molni.
It does not work for you because you don’t want to make enough effort making it workYou thus have to rely on the good will of the guys who actually made the effort to make it work for them so they can help you now.
To each his own but you’re not doing much effort, sorryI am glad we didn’t react like you because writing these manuals created hundredths hours of frustration as well. A feeling we had to overcome to provide the work to the community. Should have we reacted like you, there would be no 4.33 manual
AS always in life when you want something you must work hard for it -
It does not work for you because you don’t want to make enough effort making it work
It is very easy to post such things about 1000 km away sitting in front of your screen. I learned flying with FF and SP3 literally help on anybody 10 years ago before I did not had even Internet connection and I made a full set of training videos in HUN and ENG either. Yes, my “effort” is the problem. Oh wait, maybe not… I can quote the whole 1.11.4 part here and pls. mark the the part which explains even the existence of enable cursor button and also use the uncage word…
I know it is not a confortable feeling when after hundreds of hours anybody critize your work but the 1.11.4 part simply did not told me anything what was posted here in two sentences. First mentioned the button and second where I can find it. The rest was only 2 min to me. 1 to create TE and enter BMS and rest of 2 min to test in different positions.
I am glad we didn’t react like you because writing these manuals created hundredths hours of frustration as well.
Can I give a small recommendation? What I also missied a list of acronyms in a same place, it would make more easier to learning. Neither in BMS4 manual and neither dash -34 are any list of acronym part.
-
In fairness its not like its an easy topic to write about. I do think a better approach for a future revision might be to more closely follow the real format, which might alleviate some of the issues here. Perhaps.
-
Ok, here goes :
1.11.4.1 : AIM-9 Missile BORE Operation
When an AIM-9 missile is selected with HMCS and the missile LOS is BORE (cursor-z depression), the avionic system
slaves the missile LOS to the HMCS aiming cross LOS. Note that when the AIM-9 missile is uncaged, the enlarged
missile diamond is displayed on the HMCS. If HMCS is not on, the missile diamond is displayed only on the HUD.One thing confusing here is LOS as an abreviation as Line-Of-Sight, but otherwise just fine.
Additional remark, you can also use the SMS page instead of cursor enable to toggle missile LOS between SLAV and BORE.
Last but not least : being familiar with buttons on the HOTAS and mapping them is vital. All of them are reminded at the beginning of the -34, 1.1.1 .
-
Alone is not enough…
SLAVE to JHMCS, pipper the bogey, UNCAGE on tone, verify TD box sticks to bogey, take the shot.
-
The only part of that manual section I thought could have been confusing is that it calls the cursor enable “cursor z axis depression” or some such. I knew what that _had to_mean, but to a noob…
I almost wonder if that was taken from a RL manual. But, let’s face it, Guys, these manuals are a marvel (IMHO), especially considering what we have to pay
