Fishy explosions are FPS Killer?
-
Not bragging, but I run at 2560 x 1920 and have no problems with FPS and explosions. The OP deffo needs to tweak settings……
-
You do have SLI 580, which is a bit different beast.
But admitted: the fill rate (amount of rendered pixels = resolution) is not BMS killer. (Unless supersampling and within smoke!) There are other factors that can be tuned very well. Turn off HDR, per-pixel and shadows, and tune down AA settings, and most any system can run BMS well.
The actual tricks to do depend on your hardware, it seems to be a little different for everyone.

Anything beyond Multi-sampling level 2 is a waste… this is taken with quality 2 and AF x16 forced from in driver level:
this causes texture shimmering…
-
On NVidia cards using ‘quality’ texture mapping mode fixes shimmer.
In most other cases the quality setting is unnecessary but helps with BMS. -
On my new rig, I set all the settings to max with Multi-Sampling to 7. I do not need to run a M-S of 7 on this game? Runs stable at 60-61 FPS. I get the drops up close with explosions sometimes too, nowhere near 10 FPS though.

GTX 660 SC 2Gb 192-bit
8Gb 1600 RAMHow did you get the good looking vapor over the wings. Mine still look like a Pixel-cape over the plane? I WANT THOSE VAPOR SETTINGS!!!
-
i think those are the stock vapor graphics….your just seeing them from the side instead of a top down shot…i could be wrong, but that is most likely a good screenshot, not a new vapor effect.

@ThomasA:
When shooting another plane a strange looking fireball/explosion comes to live. This explosion looks very very bad. I mean the rest of the game is quite impresive(for a F4 update). And the FPS are going down to ~10??
My System handles the game on max settings quite well in every scenario. Only these explosions are fps killers.
Quad Core
GTX 560 TI
8GB RAMCould that be? Can i turn them off? I found a checkbox in the setting tab(before starting the game) to reduce particles. But the explosions are still there…
Cheers, Thomas
IMO the problem is your pc for whatever reason. I had to (just tested especially for you) fly through the actual fireball to see a (brief) serious drop to 10fps. So brief it would not have been noticed except I was looking for it. 560Ti and dual core at 3ghz (standard)

I just flew a night mission in 4.33 U1 and I get 60 FPS the entire time. I was at angels 29 and escorting a B52 dropping LGB’s. I watched the LGB’s hit the ground and my FPS went from 60 to 15 and stayed at 15 for over a minute. I was surprised to see such a drop at angels 29. The more I turned away the better the FPS got but it didn’t go back to normal for a few minutes and I was far from the target. Is this normal or do I need to do some further tweaking? The sim runs perfect except for this situation. When I pickle a full load of rockeyes or other CBU’s and look back it drops to about 25 until the explosions are over. Is this expected or am I getting an unusual FPS drop. I plan on messing with my Anti aliasing setting because I have read that explosions can be tough with high AA. I don’t know if that is true, but I will see what happens. Right now I have my AA really high because my frame rates are stable at the refresh rate nearly the entire mission. Most people seem to say that 8x AA is enough so I will drop it down and see what happens.
-
Drop from explosions is normal, but mainly if you look from close… from A29 I wouldn’t expect such loss of frame rate, it could be related to something else. Also are u running with V-Sync on? Cause that might be a reason for lower FPS…
I also STRONGLY suggest you and everyone to not force AA from driver level and use the built-in Multi-Sampling in BMS UI setting. Quality 3-4 should be enough for high quality picture.
-
+1
I have no driver settings only BMS settings all on full. Smooth as silk and looks fantastic.
-
Interesting, i always thought forcing AA in the driver settings is better. Will try and report in the next days!

Ditto what Icarus wrote. The difference isn’t big, but the effects are better (e.g. smoother edges with BMS Multisampling than with Catalyst antialiasing at a corresponding level).
-
Agreed here too, for BMS let it control the settings.

Same here.
-
Same here.
This is always the assumption I had as well, since the manual seems to suggest as much. I’ll try using BMS to set it instead
-
Clear proof of conspiracy theory: BMS wants to take total control of our drivers, denying us of the freedom to loose countless hours of headbanging that results to total surrender to BMS wills.
Jocks aside this is a big step up saving us from all the trouble.
It could be easier though as a clickable in section gfx in bms configurator named I trust bms settings.sent from my Xperia Z3 compact via TapaTalk

Exactly!

what is your in game multi sampling at……no game, especially F4 /w BMS addon need SLI 32xQ CSAA Antialiasing…try moving the ingame slider from 7 to 4…which on my card is x8 AA…i believe…
Anything beyond Multi-sampling level 2 is a waste… this is taken with quality 2 and AF x16 forced from in driver level:
I think quality 2 is same as x4 or x8 Anti-aliasing on driver level.

Interesting, I’ve been running at 7 since 4.32 I could save some frames if that is really that high. I’d be curious what 7 actually equals in x AA

I would argee with you in that is what the manual recommends, but still I have had good experience letting BMS handle it. Also other methods of AA can mess up the in game read out fonts (FPS coutner, info bar on external views, etc.)
MULTISAMPLING
BMS simply enumerates the quality settings offered
by the driver. BMS MULTISAMPLING is not an
absolute setting which is the same on all machines;
it is always driver dependent, so test yourself to
see the tradeoff between quality and frame rate.
For more modern graphics cards you may be better
off switching it off in BMS and overriding Anti-Aliasing in AMD Catalyst Control Center or NVIDIA
Control Panel. Anti-aliasing may significantly affect your frame rate so do experiment with the settings
to find what works for you. Lower settings are usually better if you are finding your frame rate is lower
than you want, especially at higher resolutions. -

Yes in-fact, I’m running with 7 myself since I have GTX-780 card, but only because it can carry it NP… I know that on my system the difference between 7 and 3-4 is HARDLY noticeable but the performance hit is also not so serious so I just don’t care to keep it. If I had any performance concerns, lowering quality would be the first thing I would have tried.

Okay gents, after a VERY quick check i can say: no fps difference between 8x AA forced in Crimson application and BMS setting Multisampling Quality 4.
