Training Mission Ramp Start - How to Select F-16?
-
I only discovered this amazing BMS update for Falcon4 yesterday and I cannot believe how much work must have gone into this, and that is without even scratching the surface!
I am trying to do the first training mission - Ground Ops RAMP start. Looking at the training manual, it says to select the F-16 flight in the left window of the UI. For the life of me, I cannot see how/where to select this and always end up in the A-10.
Sorry about the very basic question, but can someone please put me out of misery and tell me how to do this? -
Look at the aircraft icon,
you should see different flights on the left. click on a flight, check the icon and if it’s an A-10 don’t go in there
if it’s a F-16 click on it and you’ll be in a F-16Welcome to BMS

Eventually saw where my stupidity was - all sorted!

Thank you. Obviously, I’m still not doing the right thing!
I’m not sure what ‘aircraft icon’ you are referring to. The only one I see is under the Missions box, and that doesn’t do anything except assign me to an aircraft. There is nothing I can see that shows aircraft type. I posted above as I got into a F-16 by selecting the Training flight in the missions box from the various ones available, but there was no indication that it was a F-16 prior to going to the cockpit screen. -
Once in the training mission UI, look left.
There are three flights
PATROL
DCA
TRAININGAs you click on each flight, it turns green and just below you see the aircraft icon I was referring to
The F-16 flight is the only one TRAINING, (3rd one)
The first two have A-10 icons, the third one has a F-16 icon and is single shipI suggest also having a look in your Docs folder (BMS install) there’s a training manual that documents the training missions
The training missions are accessed through the Tactical Engagement (TE) part of the BMS user interface (UI). By default the leftmost tab named TRAINING is selected so you will see the list of missions available. Click on a mission and more windows will appear on the right side of the user interface. The bottom right corner windows give a very short summary about the selected TE. Click the COMMIT button to launch the TE.
The mission may be single ship or multiple ship and include other flights that are not F-16s. Your pilot will automatically take the first seat available, the flight lead’s position, but you can take any seat according to the mission setup. Choose the F-16 flight. The missions will start with a stopped clock. As most of the training missions start in the air, that will leave you plenty of time for flight planning. When you are ready simply click the TAKEOFF button on the bottom right of the UI to launch to 3D. -
Sorry, didn’t appreciate the differences in the icons for A-10 and F-16. Not looking closely enough! No labels to help, but I guess that just shows my ‘newness’!
Another issue that I am facing is that when going through the Training Manual docs with this first mission, there are buttons etc. that I cannot see on the panels as some levers are in the way. Also, there are switches/buttons that can’t be pressed into positions suggested in the manual. -
If you’re not using track ir you may have to learn the keystroke because you won’t be able to see all the switches. Also some buttons use left mouse clicks and some right mouse clicks. Make sure you’ve clicked the proper button.

I am so badly struggling with the basics here.
- What is ‘track IR’?
- how does this guy do the moving back and forward in the cockpit here?
- I have a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS and having big issues with the throttle (amongst other things!). It’s on the rocker paddle on the throttle attachment, and although it appears to work ok in the setup screens, I can’t get it to work correctly in-game. For example, if I select ‘Instant Action’, then increase the throttle, that works. If I then try to reduce the throttle, as long as hold the paddle in, the rpm decreases, but the second I let go of the paddle switch, the throttle starts increasing again!
- how can I use the mouse/trackpad to do the cockpit ‘mouselook’ rather than using the T-Flight POV hat?
Any help appreciated!

A head tracking device that allows you to pan the view & move around in the pit by moving your real head. Track IR is a particularly successful brand on this segment, but there are alternatives.

With a TrackIR

Can anyone give me a simple explanation of what is going with the throttle?
In the Training Mission 1 - my throttle will not move past the 20% level. The manual says something about a ‘Idle cut Off’ option, so I looked that up. Seems that pressing alt-i does something that allows me to move the throttle up, but then it doesn’t stop until I press alt-i again, or something like that!
Can anyone simply explain to me how I get the throttle handle to work simply, i.e. move it forward to increase, and backward to decrease? -

So kick it forward a bit, start the JFS, and the engine will spool up to ~20%. Hit alt-i when the engine RPM indicator stops and then you can retard the throttle back to idle. The JFS will finish spooling up and rest at the engine idle position. That should get you where it acts like you expect. I believe there is some documentation in the manual that describes the function of the Idle Cutoff a little more, but that should at least get you started.

Thanks a lot, that helped.
Another little question, when I select the Training Mission 1, I get to a screen that has the option of Ramp/Taxiway/Runway. Now, no matter what I do to select something, a counter just goes down from 30 secs down to 20 secs and then moves to the next screen.
Is there no way of bypassing this count down? -
Way to use it:
When you select Ramp, you start at 20 minutes before take-off, idle on the ramp; the counter stops at once if you’re under that.
When you select Taxiway, you start at 2 minutes before take-off, when you start taxiing; the counter stops at once if you’re under that.
When you select Runway, you start on take-off.The sim leaves you a few seconds to change. I usually hit Runway until I reach the time I need to do my rampstart, then I hit Rampstart to stop the counter and start the sim on the ramp.

Clicking and holding the middle mouse button and using the mouse wheel (that one’s a bit tricky) lets you move your head up and down.
Cheers!

I see no one answered this so I will. The problem is the throttle assignment is assigned to the throttle slider and not the throttle axis. To fix, go to setup, controllers, click on T-Flight HOTAS, then click advanced. Find the throttle setting and change it to the Z-axis. Not z-slider. You can test it by moving the throttle and watching the bar move left and right below the drop down selection. Click okay, then apply and then okay. Should be back in main menu.

Thank you, but I don’t have a middle mouse button as I am using a trackpad!

Thank you. I successfully have the throttle working on the z-axis now. One issue now is that the zoom view (previously assigned to the z-axis) doesn’t work. I tried putting it on the slider, but that always returns to the middle view when the slider is released.

Got it - I think! Thanks for the tip.

Yeah, that’s because the slider is spring loaded to return to the neutral position. You can zoom your view in and out using the mouse wheel when mouse cursor is not over any knob control in cockpit.

Thanks but as I said to eurybaric above, I don’t have a mouse wheel/middle button. I’m using a trackpad. Is there a keyboard command for this?
