I received approval to spend the $80 for the Falcon so I got it. I am nowhere near qualified enough to make a fair assessment between the two but I am going to need a better set of controls regardless, and I guess a TrackIR of some sort. Both will have to wait…
Either program looks fantastic to my eyes - way beyond anything that Falcon 4.0 was. My first flight sim was Su-27 Flanker, then F-15 Strike Eagle, then Falcon 4.0. And I was younger, and my brain was younger too!
Should have saved the $80 and put it toward a HOTAS…. JMO of course.
Edit: a bit more on the DCS F15 - “F-15C is part of our Flaming Cliffs range of aircraft and does not have a clickable cockpit”, so much like the SU25 but $7.50 more and American.

Not everyone wants the same thing from a flight simulation. I can appreciate the work that has gone into both BMS and DCS, and the dedication of their aficionados, but here is the bottom line - I just want to have some fun when I have some free time.
With respect, there is too much to learn and master in BMS for what I desire from a combat flight simulation - not that DCS is all that much simpler.
PS. Someone mentioned HAWX so I bought it - but not what I was hoping it was.
I liked the old Falcon 4.0 because I did not have to invest time and energy I do not have into getting it, and my flight controller, to work. I could have fun, and more advanced users could get as real as they wanted.

I get it. The reality is you can do this with BMS 4.34 as well as you could with the original Falcon 4.0. With any post 60’s jet simulator you at least need to learn how to spot targets, lock them up, and fire an A2A missile to start off. Instant Action will give you the “hop in and fly/shoot/bomb” experience. DCS F16 (I own it and MANY other DCS modules) is graphically superior but is missing so many other things present in BMS (ATC and Dynamic, savable campaign being the most obvious)I find myself using DCS less and less. If you ever get a more modern HOTAS you may want to try again and don’t be overwhelmed with all the BS. You don’t need to learn Cold Start, INS Navigation, or any of the 1,000,000 other bits to fly and have fun. Just learn how to fly/follow steerpoints/land/shoot/dumb bomb and you can enjoy this sim a great deal… Shoot, in Campaign you don’t even have to takeoff or land, join a flight in progress and exit when you want!

Thanks, Icer.
I need to save up for a decent HOTAS for sure.

THIS (to me) looks the most budget friendly well built new HOTAS, but if you do some searching in the BMS FS Forum HERE and on the DCS FS Forum HERE you may be able to get a used CH or TM setup for the same or less. A gentleman in Belgium is making new hi-res boards and sensors for the older TM and CH gear, which pretty much makes them timeless… i’ve had my CH Fighterstick/Pro Throttle/pedals for over 15 years, still work perfectly (though had to change out some potentiometers during that time and now have the new magnetoresistive sensors in there)… I have no personal knowledge of THIS equipment (TM T16000 HOTAS) , but it seems to work well also. Obviously not the same build quality of the X56 but a lot of discussion on it and other solutions HERE.

I feel the same, Icer. I got DCS when the Hornet came out.I got to the point where I had the old HOTAS set up. Then it died, and I just haven’t been motivated to start the process all over again. I do get the urge for Hornet avionics once in awhile. I’m thinking of picking it back up towards the end of the year. I read somewhere it’s supposed to get AG radar, etc., by then. Also, maybe by then more campaigns will be available .So, I pop in once in awhile, keep everything updated, then come home to BMS.
As for the DCS Viper, I got it but am underwhelmed compared to what we got here.
You know, to me the biggest advantage in BMS are the manuals, especially when backed up with our Forum. In DCS I feel like I’m wandering around in the dark, as it were. -
I myself have gotten back into Falcon BMS and getting pretty good at instant action and shooting migs down, until I get overwhelmed, but in the campaign when going on sweep missions, I can’t seem to find the enemy fast enough. So many aircraft are in the air that every time I lock one up, then ask awacs to declare, its almost always a friendly. Very hard to find the enemy, then out of nowhere, I get shot down. Frustrating. But since I love this sim and want to get better, I keep reading and reading. Now I’m finally able to drop dumb bombs ccip and ccrp so hopefully I can get in, drop bombs, and get out!
I’m using X-55 throttle, MS FF sidewinder 2, CH rudders, and DlanClip for head tracking. I will not give up! At least I finally know how to use the radios. They are awesome in 4.34! -

Also I recommend to use the BRAA (Bearing, Range, Altitude and Aspect) system rather than the BULLSEYE one, it’s easier to read and understand imho.Sent from my Redmi 7A using Tapatalk

I have no issue turning on labels, I play to have fun, there is no stigma in using an aid or two to make it more enjoyable for yourself in the time you have to play!

Ahh, didn’t know you can turn on labels. Cool, I’ll give that a try after work today. I used to turn those on in that WW1 sim WOFF-UE until I got better. Great Idea, thanks!

Alt-Tilde = Near Labels, Alt-1 = Far Labels, would suggest using Near only when necessary, you have to tick the “Labels” box in the Setup for them to work I think.

I would only say that when using it as entering any furball engagement I recommend zooming in the radar before attempting to engage.

Thanks for the info, Icer. I like the X56 but it is going to have to wait for funding. Too bad for me that Cougars are so expensive.
The upside of all of this - I have the 2-best Falcon flight simulators there are, and an Ubisoft game (HAWX).

@curVV:
Hi, Zen.
I’m also back after several years.
I have the same HOTAS. What issues are you having? I am programming the DX buttons as I’m progressing through the training missions - only adding them to the full keyfile, making no other changes to the existing keyboard bindings… No issues so far. And I love the ability to bind a button to shift/pinky. Really helps a lot.
The new features and added detail is awesome. Oh and ATC is no longer a pain in the butt. Great being back to good old Falcon! Best mil flightsim out there
Cheers
I’ve been sitting in front of computers figuring out how to get them to do what I want for 30-years - I just no longer have the patience for it. I am going to save up for an X56 and guess I’m going to have to figure it out when I get it! But that is the last time, EVER!!!
-
Hey Zen. Had an old x52 driving me nuts. So I upgraded to a x56 and am quite happy. Things went much smoother. If you need help PM me and I will share the set up I have so far. Still fine tuning but is going as it should. I’m using alt launcher and had to use the sst for very few things. All has been rather easy and no drama.

Thanks Icer and sortofred!

Wow, with labels on in Instant Action, for the first time ever, I was able keep racking up kills until I ran out of fuel and had to eject with what seemed like the whole enemy airforce on my heels! It was awesome!
Now to learn how to use the IFF feature. Thanks a million!Just think, I purchased the original Falcon 4 the day it came out, (still have the binder, map and disk) and have never done that! Best Jet sim by far.
-
Glad I could help, don’t really need labels in IA (all aircraft are bogeys, but it helps you quickly see who is an imminent threat vs not). Point is to ENJOY your time with it, makes learning the nuances (small bites) more fun!

For the IFF in campaign in quite easy to use, Tms (or dms) left triggers an IFF scan that can show friendly AC in both the FCR and HSD.
Just remember to turn it on in the ramp!Sent from my Redmi 7A using Tapatalk

OK I admit its been a while…
