Warthog F-16 Joystick vs. CH Pro - anyone made the switch to TM?
-
I have the Warthog Throttle and after fixing what I felt were it’s deficiencies (AB detent mod, Deltasim Slew mod, printed cover plates) I really like it. I’m considering the Warthog stick base with the F-16 grip, any input on that upgrade(?). My current CH Fighterstick has 12bit contactless sensors and works well, just curious if its worth upgrading… if indeed its an upgrade.
Edit: I see you can buy the base separately and get the “F-16” handle but the F-16 handle lookes exactly like the “A-10” handle that comes with it when you buy a standard Warthog stick… what am I missing?
-
I think the F-16 and A-10 share the same stick. If not the same they are very similar in shape.
-
I have CH, Cougar, and Warthog sticks and the Warthog is FAR and away the best of them all. Yes - the Cougar and Warthog grips are the same configuration, but the Warthog grip is a serious quality improvement and includes what feel like real MILSPEC switches - at least mine is like that. And the Paddle switch is actually shaped and feels like a Paddle switch.
After using my Warthog stick, I consider my CH one to be a toy. The feel of the CH is WAY too light for me to tolerate anymore. I never use it now.

Btw, Winwing Orion (a Chinese simulation gear manufacturer) is now also working on a F-16 FLCS and TQS (complete with the correct lift-gate for the ident and AB).
It’s still in development but their F-18 HOTAS kits are now landing in the community, I’m awaiting additional reviews but I’m rather excited to see another option appearing, alongside the likes of Virpil.

At $500 USD, this is look like a very impressive piece of kit:

I’ve had my hands on a set of WINWING Hornet throttles (the big set) and they feel pretty nice. The buttons are light, but the shape and feel are quite good in comparison to real ones.
Itching to try the WINWING stick.
…so, two urls are showing the small Hornet set “in stock”.

Thanks all, it arrives next week. Stevie, do you use the stock spring or have you looked at the “
” right away also. It seems this alleviates the feeling that the OEM spring is too strong and makes the stick feel perfectly smooth. May as well get the grease and PTFE Friction (rubber O-Ring) replacement too… -

” right away also. It seems this alleviates the feeling that the OEM spring is too strong and makes the stick feel perfectly smooth. May as well get the grease and PTFE Friction (rubber O-Ring) replacement too…I have a lot of time in RL military Trainers that emulate RL control stick forces, and to me ALL gaming sticks are way too light. Flying a Trainer becomes a real workout after a couple hours, and so to me even a WH stick is nowhere near “too stiff”.
My WH stick is one of the early produced ones, and as I read what people have posted about recent purchases I have a harder time figuring out if mine is actually a different/better example or just “broken in”. Or both? Mine still has the stock spring, but if I were to put an extension on it I would probably load a (much) stiffer one. Yes - I can note some breakout required around zero, but I can’t really call it “sticking”. I think it’s just a function of how stiff the spring is. But it probably wouldn’t hurt me any to check the lube on mine.
Also - there are tricks one can play to make it feel like a force sensing F-16 stick - which involves putting in a stiffer spring and fooling with the calibration - i.e.; calibrate to a shorter throw for max travel, and in the best case adding a ring beneath the collar to limit the stick’s travel (one cut from PVC pipe would do). I’ve fooled around with this other than adding a stiffer spring and travel limiting (which is how I’m set up currently) and it actually works pretty well at simulating a force stick. The issue that arises here though is that any breakout or stick-tion around zero/zero is amplified in making smooth inputs. You can mitigate this a bit by fooling with the dead zone settings.

Stick arrived today, set it up identically to my good ol CH Fighterstick with the added exception of having the 1st detent (Lase) of the trigger press actually being a separate entity to the 2nd detent (Fire Guns) and the Paddle switch being set as the “Paddle Switch” (whatever that does i’ll have to learn). I can report that it has 0 “stiction” issues and is perfectly smooth. I don’t find the spring tension to be too strong either, and that’s coming from a 0 tension CH. Have yet to test in flight but do not forsee any issues, very pleased so far and my new Deltasims SLEW mod is supposedly coming this week also…

Fantastic! In general the Paddle switch cancels the Autopilot…I think it does some other things too, but that’s the basic.

Thx Stevie, maybe i’ll use it as a “DX Shift” or something, AP is pretty well covered…

Thanks for posting that picture of the work-in-progress Winwing gear, Tazz!
When I saw the F-16 TQS in that picture, I just about had a heart attack!
… I mean in a good way! :clap2:
Of course, it would need to have a good throttle position sensor, good enough to do AAR. I hope they don’t skimp on that sensor. Nor on the RDR CURSOR thumbstick. But if they do a good job on those things, that would be a sweet piece of gear.
Fingers crossed! :pray2:

I like to used CMS->dwn as a shift key because it isn’t used for anything in the Viper. This way I can retain all of my basic Viper HOTAS functions as basic and directly assigned.
-
On any stick I used I always had the Pinky button as Pinky and shift as any button that needs to be pressed with the thumb makes it pretty useless as shift button on the stick as you can’t press any other button with your thumb

CMS-Down turns on the jammer AFAIR

That’s another reason I like CMS->dwn as a shift key. On the WH stick it simply amounts to “squeezing” the stick. I use the combination of CMS->dwn and Pinky to command Ejection, forex. I don’t assign any other shift functions to any of my Stick switches because BMS takes care of what I need them all to do for me. So my thumb is never trying to pull double duty.

That may be for the Warthog, but not for the Viper. A RL Viper stick doesn’t have that switch position and that’s why it’s not accounted for/used in BMS.
-
Depends on your setup. I have a few function like Visor, NVG flip Kneeboard Pages, AVTR, on my stick hats as shift layers. Therefore using Pinky switch and finger for shifting leaves more options open

Yes - if you want to go “off-script” with your HOTAS then that’s another consideration. I try to keep mine strictly in line with the RL aircraft, otherwise what’s the point of spending all that money on a set of RL representative controls ?
Once I have my cockpit built and have an actual Ejection handle, I’ll probably kill my shift option…right now the only one I use is to eject.

In the -34, pages 18+20, it is stated that CMS-Right sets the jammer to standby (music off), CMS-Down turns it on.
Is that incorrect ?
